Let’s Face the Music
Ria Jones, the world-famous star of Evita, Cats, and Les Miserables, returns home for two special concerts.

Judy ends the concert with songs whose texts are by Shakespeare, Yeats, Eliot, Oscar Wilde and Emily Dickinson. The concert will be framed by the singing of Welsh and American music by the popular Gyrlais Male Voice Choir, directed by Meirwyn Thomas.
Mayte Martin
Mayte Martin is easily the best-known Catalan singer. She has been very popular since her early twenties, when she won a string of prizes. She has taken part in Barcelona’s WOMAD festivals and in the Gipsy King’s celebrated festival Mosaique Gitane at Nimes. She will be accompanied by her regular solo guitarist, two dancers and a “clapper”.

This show is about the fantastically dangerous life of an imaginary Iberian character called Malic. The introduction of the iPad,with its touch screen technology, has allowed even very young children to take advantage of a computer. So what if all children in a school were given an iPad to use in class and take home with them?
Anne Laure Bazin works in a school where every child, teacher and teaching assistant is given a free iPad to use in and out of lessons. For her,the main advantage of everyone having an iPad had been the improvement in communication.Documents can be emailed straight over to workmates during a meeting.Children submit their homework by email,or through the school’s learning environment.Teachers now take the register(点名)using their iPad,which means that there is a record of which children are in school, and which classroom they are in.
The use of iPad has encouraged greater sharing of resources among teacher. All communication with parents is now done by email.Working as a group in class is much easier as children can share documents. The whole class can look at one child’s work by attaching(连接)the iPad to the whiteboard. If a child has forgotten the textbook, the teacher can take a photograph of the relevant(相关的)page and send it to the student in class.
While the use of the iPad in schools has revolutionized(变革)the way children are taught ,it hasn’t completely replaced more traditional methods of teaching .Worksheets are still used in class as some children prefer the contact with paper. The children all have a textbook and exercise books. In Anne Laure’s school, parents feared that the iPads would replace exercise books and children would lose handwriting skills.Anne Laure says,” The teacher are not ready to let go of the traditional style of teaching. We have welcomed the iPads in so much as they help communication and widen the resources available but we are not ready to let go of paper yet.The children themselves still value their exercise books and depend on them for review.”

Goolsbee, now a professor at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, said the rising number of Americans out of work forever paints a troubling picture about the recovery (恢复).
“If we are on path to only be two-thirds recovered,” Goolsbee wrote, “and then have millions of businesses closed down and the jobs there lost fast, there will be years for us to try to get back onto the path we were on before.”
And those everlasting job losses will influence the economy. People out of work may cutback spending or even stop it. They are at risk of falling behind on car payments, credit card bills and bank loan (贷款). Those risks are magnified by the fact that the government has so far failed to provide additional economic recovery policies (政策) — even though the US economy is in great need of them.
“Good insurance (保险) policies for people out of work have helped them pay the loan much more easily,” Principal’s Shah wrote, “but with everlasting job losses clearly rising and still no sign of an additional economic recovery package, the trouble will become more widespread and obvious.”
The hope is that those recognized as jobless at present will in the end get a job somewhere else. Even though some restaurants, shops and small businesses have shut down, new companies are opening each day here and there. But there is a time limit at play because the time of continuously out of job influences the chances of getting another job. “The longer you’re out of the job market,” said PNC’s Faucher, “the more difficult it becomes to find a new one.” Many Americans who had a job loss or had a too long vacation without any payment are eagerly looking forward to another job.
8.What does the underlined word “magnified” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Reduced. B.Enlarged.
C.Avoided. D.Unchanged.
9.What’s Shah’s attitude towards the government’s present economy policies?
A.Supportive. B.Confused.
C.Disappointed. D.Uninterested.
10.What can we learn about the Americans out of work?
A.Losing jobs gets them out of the job market.
B.They have more opportunities to have vacations.
C.They successfully get offers from new companies.
D.Losing jobs for long makes it harder to find a new one.
11.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.The jobless usually spend less.
B.Insurance companies offer necessary loans.
C.More job losses suggest a dark economy future.
D.The economy recovery depends on the government.
D
The financial climate, the job market, family tensions, Obama moving into the Lincoln bedroom. Even the climate’s getting in on the list. Yup, change is everywhere in 2009. If you’re not careful, all kinds of strange things might happen in your otherwise ordered life, so it’s best to work at avoiding change whenever it rears its head (出现).
Here are 5 ways to do just that:
1. Ignore any opportunities How many times have you taken a chance, only for things to go wrong? How many times have you seized an opportunity only or it to slip between your fingers? There's always another mess waiting for you, so it’s better to stay right where you are. Where you are right now is a known quantity — it’s safe, warm and comfortable. Doesn’t that sound better than going out there, messing up and looking stupid? |
2. Set your expectations low If you’re one of the people out there looking to make a change in 2009 rather than having change made for you, you’d better set your expectations low. |
3. Keep on running and don’t look back The best thing to do is to set things out so that you can do everything. It’s good to be busy and running around after everyone else will mean that everyone’s happy and there’s no room for change to happen. It’s a win-win! |
4. Recognize that most changes are too big Face it; there are some tasks you’re just not up to. Landing that exciting new job, getting a promotion, taking on the “big project” or building a relationship that really works — these are all big challenges and you don’t want to bite off more than you can chew. |
5. Ignore that little voice inside You might sometimes hear a little voice in your head that tells you you’re not happy or that something has to change. This little trouble maker can speak up at any time and throw the Spanner of Confusion in the works, and it has only one thing on its mind — to take you out of your comfort zone and make you change. |
Imagine if everyone went around listening to what they really wanted and acted on it — what a mess! No, best to ignore it and carry on with what you’re doing.
12.The purpose of writing this passage is_________.
A.to introduce ways to avoid change in 2009
B.to attract the readers’ interest in change in 2009
C.to discuss whether people should change in 2009
D.to tell the readers the news of American New President — Obama
13.Supposing you are safe, warm and comfortable now, you should______.
A.set your expectations low
B.ignore any opportunities
C.keep on running and don't look back
D.ignore that little voice inside
14.The underlined sentence “You don’t want to bite off more than you can chew” implies .
A.you have big challenges to fight
B.you are too small to eat too much food
C.there are some big challenges you can’t fight
D.you are afraid of challenging some difficult tasks
15.The best way of dealing with that little voice inside is_______ .
A.to change something at once
B.to have a chat with the speaker
C.to discuss it with the trouble maker
D.to ignore it and go on with what you are doing

52.Dear students,
With the summer vacation approaching, you must be wondering how to spend this precious holiday in a more interesting and meaningful way. Here, I’m appealing to you to be part of your family and society by taking up a little labor.
As the saying goes, labor is the most glorious. It is a traditional Chinese virtue. It can not only contribute to your body building, but also offer you an opportunity to get to know people around, let alone the knowledge that you have no chance to acquire at school.
There are tons of things you can do. You can help your parents do some housework, such as cleaning the floor, mowing the lawn, and beautifying the rooms. Furthermore, to work as a volunteer in your neighborhood is a good suggestion, because a sense of great fulfilment comes with helping others.
Let’s take action to make a huge difference by involving ourselves in daily labor, which can really make a man.
