As far as I can recall, I have often been told that I am too serious. I admit that I’m very serious most of the time but not too serious, because seriousness has always been very natural to me. I believe this is because of my desire to always improve myself and my dislike of imperfection. As a result, I am hyper-critical of everyone including myself, everything I do, and even the world around me. Therefore, I think you’ll also agree that I’m an expert at being serious and it may be a surprise that I tell you there are several problems with being too serious.

1Stress: Being serious all the time can be very stressful. For instance , the feeling of always having to be solemn( 过于苛刻 ) and responsible can be overwhelming.

2Worry: When people are too serious, they tend to worry a lot. Even insignificant issues become worrisome.

3Anxiety: People who are too serious tend to have great expectations or fears that preoccupy(使忧心忡忡) them.

4Depression: When serious people concentrate mostly on serious issues that are mostly out of their control, they tend to become more depressed.

5Decision making: When someone is full of stress, worry, anxiety and depression, they are less clearheaded to think logically and carefully.

Boredom: serious individuals tend to become more bored with common matters.

Interactions: Being too serious can negatively affect interactions with other people, thus resulting in poor social skills and fewer friends.

Fortunately, there is a simple and easy suggestion to help anyone become less serious. Just set aside some time each day when no important tasks need to be done. This will be the down time to just relax. Don’t do anything stressful which tends to aggravate your seriousness. Instead, I recommend bicycling, jogging, walking, or even just talking with a friend which can make you relaxed. Try this tip to lighten you up!

    56. The author is very serious most of the time because ______.

    tends to make wrong decisions

usually keeps his colleagues or friends far away

is always interested and absorbed in ordinary matters

    tends to worry about everything

    A. ①②③          B. ①②④            C. ①③④           D. ②③④

    58. We can infer from the passage that being too serious _______.

    A. is common among middle-aged people

    B. can prevent person from achieving big success

    C. makes a person have a negative attitude towards life

    D. has harmful effects on a person’s happiness and social life

    59. What does the underlined word “aggravate” in the last paragraph mean?

    A. Worsen.       B. Remove.    C. Reduce.   D. Change.

Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people the nation and especially the young people admire. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the potential of that nation.

If today in America, you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choice would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars—the people connected with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent but one wonders if one should regard rock stars as a model. The rock stars too often are involved with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However, one should seek more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes.

A second type of hero for the American youth is the sports star. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area—SPORTS. However, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of a mess. Too frequently drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star.

A third type of hero is the TV or movie star. This person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome. However, the personal life is quite sad and they should not be regarded as a model for young people.

Today, the rock star, the athlete and the actor all have become the models of the youth in America. Really, do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor, a teacher, or a scientist? These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone.

What is really sad is that the young try to imitate their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American youngsters are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright.

6.1 Why rock stars shouldn’t be regarded as a model according to this passage?

    A. They cannot compose very good music.      B. Most of them are not honest persons.

    C. They care more about themselves than others.

    D. Often they don’t live a healthy and respectable life.

    62. What is true of the three groups mentioned in this article?

    A. They are not clever but are good-looking.    B. They are rich but are strict with themselves.

    C. They are talented in some area but lead a disordered life.

    D. They are perfect in every way.

    63. American young people will not admire ______.

    A. a university professor B. a popular singer    C. a football player  D. a film actress

    64. According to the writer, people should regard those______ as their model.

    A. who are rich, famous and wear the latest fashionable clothes

    B. who are talented and do things that are beneficial to society

    C. who plays an important role in a play          D. who have a great ability in sports.

    65. What is the writer’s attitude towards American youth’s admiration for their heroes?

    A. He is understanding. B. He is critical.  C. He is neutral (中立的). D. He is uninterested.

    D

Living in a modern society has its advantages and disadvantages. One disadvantage is that you often have to live closer to other people than you would like to. Sometimes, your neighbors make noise that you are not comfortable with.

The best way to solve this problem is to talk with your neighbor first. You should be very polite and ask your neighbor if he knows how thin the walls of your homes are. This way doesn’t criticize (批评) his behavior; it simply points out that he may not realize how far his sound travels. Tell him that you know that sometimes you make noise as well, but that you do your best to keep it down. Often this will solve the problem right away, but sometimes the neighbor may become angry.

If your neighbor becomes angry with you, there are some more steps you can take. You might write a letter to the neighborhood committee. Make sure you write down the source of the noise and the time in the letter. They will review the situation and decide whether your neighbor is out of line. Some noise is considered to be reasonable, even if it bothers you. So you may prepare a good pair of earplugs (耳塞).

Even if your neighbor makes too much noise, you don’t have to live your life in discomfort. It’s always a good idea to be friendly with your neighbors. You may clean the rubbish in front of his door. He’s sure to appreciate behavior like this and be more open to your suggestions about noise level.

    66. What is the first step to deal with the noisy neighbor?

    A. To buy a good pair of earplugs.

    B. To offer suggestions to the neighbor.

    C. To ask the neighborhood committee for help.

    D. To tell the neighbor how bad his behavior is.

    67. The underlined word “reasonable” in the third paragraph probably means “____”.

    A. terrible     B. loud     C. proper      D. unpleasant

    68. What should be written in the letter to the neighborhood committee?

    A. How to punish your noisy neighbor.

    B. Where and when the noise appears.

    C. How to make the noise less in the neighborhood.

    D. What problems the noise causes to your life.

69.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

    A. You should control your noise as well.

    B. You can live comfortably even if there is noise.

    C. Your neighbor may be more friendly than you think.

    D. You should build good relationship with your neighbor.

70.The author wrote this passage to tell us ____ .

    A. why we should get on well with neighbors

    B. how to relax ourselves in a modern society

    C. how to become known among neighbors

    D. what we should do with our noisy neighbor

    第Ⅱ卷

    第一节:阅读表达(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

Every parent wants his or her children to grow up loving life. But we don’t always know how to encourage this. Here are a few tips to help you guide your child to a joyful life.

    Teach gratitude

Help your children appreciate the everyday wonders of life by stopping what you are doing and expressing thanks for the moment. Whether it is the chance to play ball in the park together, or watch a beautiful sunset, express gratitude and your child will follow your example. Doctors say that when parents show gratitude, their children grow up more enthusiastic, joyful, interested, and engaged in the world around them.

Help your child deal with frustration

When your child complains that he can’t do something, like finishing a puzzle or tying his shoes, don’t try to convince him that he can. Rather, show patience and say, “That’s okay. There’s no rush. When you want to try again, let me know.” The child is then likely to come back to the task, a few minutes later.

    Follow your child’s interests

Happy people are often those who have mastered a skill. For example, when your child practices throwing a ball to you, she learns from her mistakes, she learns persistence and discipline, and she experiences the joy of succeeding due to her own efforts. She also experiences the joy of recognition for this accomplishment. Most importantly, she discovers she has some control over her life. This feeling of control through mastery is an important factor in determining adult happiness.

Teach your child to do meaningful things

As your child gets older, teach her how satisfying it can be to help others. Research shows that people who have meaning in their lives feel less depressed. Working for a charity and helping others can help make life more meaningful. Even young children can benefit from this lesson. Even helping out with simple household chores can help your child feel that she is making a contribution.

    71. What is the text mainly about? (no more than 10 words)

    72. In what situation do children grow up more enthusiastic, joyful, interested, and engaged in the world around them? (no more than 8 words)

    73. What is the meaning of “There’s no rush” in the third paragraph? (no more than 8 words)

    74. What is the most important thing about following your child’s interests?

    (no more than 15words)

    75. Why do you teach your child how satisfying it can be to help others according to the passage? (no more than 15 words)
