    The Silk Road Train
The first high-speed train to extend out into China’s vast western regions connects the 1776 kilometers between Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, and Lanzhou, capital of Gansu, in a little under 12 hours. The train follows the ancient Silk Road via the town of Turpan, geographically the lowest place in China at 154m below sea level.
    The Island Train
When it opened in 2015, this was the world’s first circular high-speed rail-way line, whirling 650km around south China’s tropical Hainan island, in about five hours, providing passengers with wonderful views of the South China Sea and the best beaches.

Most teenagers are still trying to find their passion and purposes in life. However, not Gitanjali Rao. The 15-year-old girl has been coming up with innovative solutions to worldwide problems since she was ten. It is, therefore, not surprising that the teenager has won the honor of “America's Top Young Scientist”.
In the third grade, Rao was inspired to build a device after witnessing the shocking story unfold in Flint, Michigan, where cost-cutting measures led to the use of a polluted river as the city's primary water supply and incredibly high levels of lead made their way into people's drinking water.
After two months' research, Rao designed a small and portable device that used sensors to instantly detect lead in water. Called Tethys, after the Greek Goddess(女神) of freshwater, it attaches to a cellphone and informs the residents via an app if their drinking water contains lead. The design earned her the 3M Young Scientist Challenge in 2017. She is currently working with scientists and medical professionals to test Tethys' potential and hopes the device will be ready for commercial use by 2022.
Later, Rao took on another social issue-drug addiction. Her app, called Epione, which won the Health Pillar Prize at the TCS Ignite Innovation Student Challenge in May 2019, is designed to catch drug addiction in young adults before it's too late.
More recently, the teenager has developed an app named Kindly, which uses artificial intelligence technology to detect possible signs of cyberbullying(网上欺凌). When users type in a word or phrase, Kindly is able to pick it up if it's bullying, and then it gives the option to edit it or send it the way it is. It gives them the chance to rethink what they are saying so that they know what to do next time.
All kinds of awesome, Gitanjali Rao has been selected from 5,000 equally impressive nominees(被提名人) for TIME Magazine's first-ever “Kid of the Year”.
    24. What gave Rao the idea of inventing the device Tethys?
    A. The incident of lead pollution.
    B. The issue with drug addiction.
    C. The shortage of water supplies.
    D. The high cost of purifying water.
    25. What is Rao expecting of Tethys?
    A. It'll remove metal from water.
    B. It'll make it to market soon.
    C. It'll win her a higher prize.
    D. It'll be fitted to cellphones.
    26. What will Kindly allow users to do?
    A. Receive pre-warning signals of threat.
    B. Input words into a computer automatically.
    C. Choose from secure social networking sites.
    D. Weigh their words before posting them online.
    27. Which of the following can best describe Gitanjali Rao as a young scientist?
    A. Ambitious and humble. B. Optimistic and adventurous.
    C. Talkative and outstanding. D. Creative and productive.
A 25. B 26. D 27. D
根据文章第二段“In the third grade, Rao was inspired to build a device after witnessing the shocking story unfold in Flint, Michigan, where cost-cutting measures led to the use of a polluted river as the city's primary water supply and incredibly high levels of lead made their way into people's drinking water.”(在上三年级时,拉奥目睹了密歇根州弗林特市发生的一件令人震惊的事情,他受此启发设计了一个装置。 并结合文章下一段关键句“Called Tethys, after the Greek Goddess of freshwater, it attaches to a cellphone and informs the residents via an app if their drinking water contains lead.”(它被命名为Tethys,取自希腊的淡水女神。 故选A项。
根据文章第三段关键句“She is currently working with scientists and medical professionals to test Tethys' potential and hopes the device will be ready for commercial use by 2022.”(她目前正在与科学家和医学专业人士合作,测试Tethys的潜力,并希望该设备能在2022年投入商业使用。)
根据文章倒数第二段关键句“When users type in a word or phrase. Kindly is able to pick it up if it's bullying, and then it gives the option to edit it or send it the way it is. It gives them the chance to rethink what they are saying so that they know what to do next time.”(当用户输入一个单词或短语时,Kindly能够识别出它是否具有欺侮性,然后它会提供编辑或按其方式发送的选项。
根据文中第二段“In the third grade, Rao was inspired to build a device after witnessing the shocking story unfold in Flint, Michigan”(在上三年级时,拉奥目睹了密歇根州弗林特市发生的一件令人震惊的事情,她受此启发设计了一个装置)描述Gitanjali Rao通过目睹的一场事故从而发明了一种装置可知,Rao是富有创造力的;又根据她发明的“Tethys”,“Epione”及“Kindly”并结合文章第一段关键句“The 15-year-old girl has been coming up with innovative solutions to worldwide problems since she was ten.”(这个15岁的女孩从10岁起就一直在为世界各地的问题想出创新解决方案。)

Nearly every week, we hear news about the latest successes and failures in driverless vehicles. But we hear little about how other industries are developing this same kind of technology. One industry heavily involved in researching and developing artificial intelligence, or AI, is agriculture. Companies are experimenting with high-tech tools that can help farmers save time and money, while reducing environment-harming chemicals.
One of the companies is ecoRobotix of SwitzerLand. It created a robot equipped with AI and cameras to identify all plants on a farm. The robot has four wheels to carry it through the fields in search of weeds. Computer-controlled arms then lower and spray the weeds with small amounts of herbicide(除草剂). Company officials say the robot can fully operate on its own for up to 12 hours a day while being powered by the sun. It uses the same kind of sensor and positioning technology used to guide driverless vehicles. A farmer can also control the equipment through a smart-phone.
The co-founder of ecoRobotix, Aurelien Demaurex, says the farm robot can kill weeds with 20 times 1ess herbicide than traditional methods. This is because the system uses exactly the right amount of chemical in the exact place required to kill the weeds. Currently, farmers spread weed killers over massive areas to destroy unwanted plants.
Another company developing farm robotics is California-based Blue River Technology. The company has a system called "See & Spray", which it claims was the world's first smart sprayer. The system-which connects to the back of a tractor-is also equipped with AI to identify and chemically kill only the weeds. It can also spray chemicals on wanted plants to help them grow. Ben Chostner, vice-president of business development for Blue River Technology, explains in a company video that See & Spray technology uses the same deep learning methods used in facial recognition. "The first time the machine saw a pigweed, it didn't know what kind of plant it was. But we taught it-by giving it tens of thousands of examples of that pigweed-and now it's an expert in pigweed. "
    28. How will AI benefit agriculture?
    A. It will fund agriculture research.
    B. It contributes to low-cost farming.
    C. It can avoid harmful chemicals.
    D. It frees all farmers from field work.
    29. What do the products of the two companies have in common?
    A. They use recognition technology.
    B. They are powered by solar energy.
    C. They are connected with smart phones.
    D. They can help wanted plants grow rapidly.
    30. What do Ben Chostner's words suggest about the robot?
    A. It is environmentally-friendly.
    B. It is good at self-improving.

Crying is generally associated with negative emotions like being sad or frustrated, making this natural emotional state something that many people try to avoid. Yet a new study, which sought to better understand the physiological function of shedding tears, suggests that crying is actually kind of good for you. Specifically, it turns out that crying supports the regulation(调控) of breathing during a stressful event.
Sharman headed the research and said crying was previously thought to help humans deal with stressful situations, which led them to testing the idea. Researchers invited 197 undergraduate students to watch sad videos for 17 minutes. About half of them ended up crying. All of the students then participated in the Cold Pressor Stress Test. Researchers monitored their heart and respiration activity during this stress test.
Researchers were surprised when they found that those who cried were not better able to deal with the stress test than those who did not cry. However, they did come across an unexpected finding: evidence that participants who cried were better able to regulate their breathing.
“Firstly, crying doesn’t seem to provide any change to stress hormones(激素) or our ability to deal with physical stress to a degree that might be meaningful if you hurt yourself. Secondly, what was our main finding, is that crying seems to assist in keeping our body stable and calm by slowing down and regulating our breathing and our heart rate,” Sharman told PsyPost.
However, there are some limitations to the findings. “We don’t know if these reactions are typical in real-world settings where you might be crying because of sadness or loss, for example, or if there are differences if someone else is present with you when you cry, ” Sharman said.
    32. What does the underlined word “respiration” in Paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Breathing. B. Brain.
    C. Blood-pressure. D. Muscle.
    33. Why did the researchers do the research?
    A. To help people to avoid negative emotions.
    B. To better understand breathing in stressful situations.
    C. To find out whether people cry when watching sad videos.
    D. To prove an already existing thought about crying.
    34. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. That crying helps regulate breathing was found accidentally.
    B. Sharman is sure that the research findings agree with reality.
    C. Crying is very helpful for us to deal with stress.
    D. The undergraduate students are more likely to cry.
    35. Where can you probably read the passage?
    A. A biology textbook. B. A health magazine.
    C. A travel brochure. D. A research report.
A 33. D 34. A 35. B

上文“Nowadays we all have hundreds of Facebook “friends”(如今,我们在Facebook上都有数百个“好朋友”)”提到我们在网上有很多好友,下文是讲述真正友谊的一些特点,所以A项:We can instantly connect with them online, but does that make them true friends? 故选A项。
上文“In hard times, a true friend will never leave you in the shadow alone.(在困难的时候,真正的朋友永远不会让你一个人在阴影下)”提到在困境时朋友不会留下我们自己在阴影中。 Instead, they offered to give you a helping hand whenever they can(相反,他们会主动提供力所能及的帮助)符合语境。
根据本段中“To know whether you’re dealing with a true friendship or not, just notice who sticks around when you reach new heights in your life.(要知道你是否在和一段真正的友谊打交道,只要注意一下当你达到人生新高度时,谁会一直在你身边)”及“but the real friends in your life will feel happy for you(但你生活中真正的朋友会为你感到高兴)”可知,本段主要讲当你实现新的目标时真正的朋友的态度。D项:True friends will congratulate you when you reach a new goal(真正的朋友会在你达到新目标时祝贺你)适合作为主题句。故选D项。
根据前一句“They give you the freedom to pursue other friendships and activities in your life.(他们给你自由去追求你生活中的其他友谊和活动)”可知,真正的朋友不会介意你与其他人建立友谊。 That’s because they know your friendship is rock solid(那是因为他们知道你们的友谊坚如磐石)符合语境。故选E项。
根据上一句“They know that you will slip up (出现疏漏) from time to time.(他们知道你会时不时出现疏漏)”及空后一句“They just put it behind them and know that you have good intentions despite mistakes you might make.(他们只是把它抛在脑后,知道你的意图是好的,尽管你可能会犯错误)”可知,真正朋友不会介意你偶尔犯错误,所以你不必长篇大论地道歉,F项:So you don’t have to give them a long apology(所以你不必给他们一个很长的道歉)符合语境,故选F项。

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. So, they went to the local supermarket together. They bought a bag of corn and some special bags for popcorn. When they got home, they made a lot of popcorn and put it in the special bags. With the popcorn, they went to Bernard’s home. They told Bernard how to sell the popcorn. Bernard and his parents were very grateful. And the Meredith family also felt very happy to help this family.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He took the popcorn around to the houses and sold all his popcorn. He earned a lot of money. Then, he wanted to be self-dependent. Therefore, he asked Mrs. Meredith to teach him how to make popcorn. After that, not only did he sell popcorn, but he also added cream and salt to the popcorn to make it taste better. Bernard grew up to be a remarkable man. He did not forget the help of Meredith’s family, and he also did what he could to help those in need.
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too.(当Meredith太太听到John的主意时,她也认为这是个好主意)可以针对如何实现制作爆米花这个提议展开构思;根据第二段首句With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.(一切准备就绪后,Bernard开始了他的新生意)可以针对Bernard如何通过卖爆米花让家庭摆脱困境展开构思。
