“The first step in realizing your dream is to not be afraid of any challenge,” Liu Wa from Bejing Chaoyang Kaiwen Academy said.
This July, when Liu was informed that the music festival her band was attending had some trouble and was about to be cancelled, she decided to take over the job of hosting it. “I thought to myself, how hard could hosting be?” What's more, she turned this festival into a charity event by raising money for a stray dog rescue station in Anhui province.
Liu became a volunteer for the station by coincidence two years ago. “I realized how much money it could take to save those dogs. This music festival is exactly the opportunity I need to raise people's awareness of protecting stray dogs and donate money for them,” Liu said.
Liu and her two friends, who are also members of the band needed to find sponsorships, set up the venue and contact bands of high schools in Beijing to perform within two weeks. “Negotiating with sponsors was tricky sometimes as we needed to figure out what they wanted and trade with resources we had," Liu recalled. They managed to cooperate with companies such as a study abroad agency to cover the expense as much as possible. Many parents also “sponsored” them with their homemade food.
The weather forecast had said that the day of the music festival, Aug 6, was going to be rainy. “We were so worried at first. But then a miracle happened: It only rained a little toward the end, helping us to sell the umbrellas we had prepared,” Liu said.
Audiences were mainly friends, parents and students. “Because of the pandemic, the audiences were limited to no more than 200 people, which also pushed us to come up with ways of earning money other than tickets," Liu explained. Eventually, they managed to raise 50,000 yuan from rain gear, food, and accessories they had designed.
Having been looked down upon many times by professional bands in Beijing, Liu also sees this festival as a way of telling the world that high school bands are just as good. “I want to run our own music channel on Bilibili. Our love for music will never stop,” Liu said.
24. What can we learn about Liu Wa?
A. She is caring and has a strong will.
B. She turned the music festival totally into a charity.
C. She intentionally volunteered for a stray dog rescue station.
D. She decided to host the festival due to her relevant experiences.
25. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The preparations for the music festival.
B. The negotiations with sponsor companies.
C. Sponsor feedback on the music festival.
D. Resources needed for the music festival.
26. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The weather forecast was not a bit accurate.
B. Many parents also donated money to the music festival.
C. People from all walks of life attended the music festival.
D. Selling tickets for the festival is not Liu's only way to raise money.
27. What does the music festival mean to Liu?
A. A battle with professional bands. B. A showcase for high school bands.
C. A channel for popularizing her band. D. A chance to learn from other bands.

The beautiful island country of Madagascar has a serious school shortage. About a third of Malagasy children have no access to education because the schools are too far away or severely overcrowded. Thinking Huts, a non-profit dedicated to increasing global access to education, plans to tackle the issue with a series of 3D-printed schools, the first of which was completed in April 2022.
The 765-square-feet structure, named Bougainvillea, will house 30 students. The construction began with the printer pouring a cement-like(水泥状) mixture in a pattern to create the walls. The entire process took just 18 hours! The roof, doors and windows were locally sourced, and the walls were made of a cement mixture that can resist big environmental pressures in the area. Bougainvillea was 3D printed by 14 Trees, a company with experience printing buildings throughout Kenya and Malawi.
Maggie Grouts, the 22-year-old founder of Thinking Huts, is a senior at the University of Colorado and was just 15 when she started Thinking Huts. Adopted from a rural village when she was 18months old, Grout realized that not all kids were as fortunate as her and wanted to help. The idea for the3D-printed schools came to her after brainstorming with her father on ways to use the technology for the greater good.
The 3D printing approach shrinks the construction turnaround time from months to days, as well as the cost. This allows more schools to be built in less time and reduces the building’s carbon footprints. And these savings in time, cost and materials meet a real need for education infrastructure (基础设施) to help bridge the global opportunity gap.
“Thinking Huts hopes to have a Thinking Hut in every community where children do not have a place for education and is fundraising to develop this goal. By using 3D printing, we are combining the potential of technology with architectural solutions that tackle real problems the world faces within education,” says Grouts.
28. What are 3D-printed schools intended for?
A. Reducing construction wastes.
B. Helping deal with a shortage of schools.
C. Providing high-quality education for local students.
D. Drawing public attention to 3D-printing technology.
29. Which of the following statements best describes Bougainvillea?
A. It has a complex architectural structure.
B. It features strong resistance to bad weather.
C. It is built with the help of the local government.
D. It can hold more students than traditional schools.
30. What can be inferred about Maggie Grouts from the text?
A. She is truly creative and warmhearted.
B. She had no access to school as a child.
C. She is devoted to designing 3D-printed products.
D. She raised money for kids from rural areas.
31 What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4?
A. The advantages of 3D-printed schools.
B. The wide popularity of 3D-printing technology.
C. The significance of narrowing the global opportunity gap.
D. The impact of 3D-printed buildings on the environment.
D
Have you ever taken a look at a few lovely chickens and desired to touch and kiss them? Apparently, for some people the urge is hard to resist. However, according to an updated warning by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) doing so could spread dangerous—maybe even life-treatening-Salmonella. So, no matter how irresistible those little feathered birds may seem, avoid giving them a kiss.
This isn’t the first time the CDC has warned against physically touching or kissing your poultry. Back in 2018 Halloween, they advised against dressing the birds up for fear of spreading Salmonella. Then again, in May this year, with 474 cases reported, another warning was issued. According to interviews with 271 of those affected, 77 percent had been in contact with poultry before getting sick.
“Backyard poultry, like chickens and ducks, can carry Salmonella bacteria even if they look healthy and clean,” writes the CDC. These bacteria can easily spread to anything in the areas where the poultry live. You can get sick from touching your poultry or anything in their environment and then touching your mouth or food, and swallowing Salmonella bacteria.
Most people who come into contact with the Salmonella bacteria will experience diarrhea (腹泻), fever, and stomach cramp. Children are particularly affected—one in three sick people are below the age of five, which is intelligible given their weaker immune systems and natural love for the birds.
The CDC recommends that parents shouldn't let little children touch chicks, ducks, or other backyard poultry and make sure that if they do, they should wash their hands thoroughly afterward. Likewise, adults are instructed to do the same after touching backyard poultry and their eggs should be cleaned, stored, and cooked correctly to avoid the infection of Salmonella.
This might be easier said than done—for many people, backyard chickens are beloved—but if you really love them, stop physical displays of affection in case you end up with Salmonella bacteria on your face. It turns out to be a bit of harm.
32. Why does CDC repeatedly warn people not to kiss chickens?
A. To protect the poultry. B. To show love to chickens.
C To get rid of Salmonella. D. To stay safe from potential danger.
33. How is paragraph 2 mainly developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By showing statistics.
C. By making comparison. D. By interviewing victims.
34 What does the underlined word “intelligible” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A. Understandable. B. Irresistible. C. Unavoidable. D. Controversial.
35. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Stress the importance of affection. B. Add more background information.
C. Provide some suggestions for the readers. D. Summarize the theme of the passage.

It was Christmas Day. Pappy was working alone fixing an old lantern in the back room when he heard the ring of his bell on the shop door. The bell, which produced a uniquely pleasant sound, had been in Pappy’s family for over a hundred years. He valued it dearly and enjoyed sharing its song with all who came to his shop. Although the bell was hung on the inside of the main door, Pappy had tied a wire to the screen door so that it would ring whether the inner door was open or not. Hearing the bell, he left the back room to greet his customer.
“And how can I help you, little lady ? ” Pappy’s voice was joyful.
“Hello, sir.” The little girl spoke almost in a whisper. She looked at Pappy with her big brown eyes, and then slowly scanned the room in search of something special. Shyly she told him, “I’d like to buy a present, sir.”
“Well, let’s see,” Pappy said. “ Who is this present for ?”
“My grandpa. It’s for my grandpa. But I don’t know what to get.”
Pappy began to make suggestions.“How about a pocket watch? It’s in good condition.” The little girl didn’t answer. She had walked to the doorway and put her small hand on the door. She shook the door gently to ring the bell. Pappy’s face seemed to glow as he saw her smiling with excitement. “ This is just right,” the little girl said. “Momma says my grandpa loves music.”
Just then, Pappy’s expression changed. Fearful of breaking the little girl’s heart, he told her, “I’m sorry, Missy. That’s not for sale. Maybe your grandpa would like this little radio.”
The girl looked at the radio, bowed her head, and sadly sighed, “ No, I don’t think so.”
In an effort to help her understand, Pappy told her that the bell had been his only companion, for the rest of his family were all gone now, except for his estranged(疏远的)daughter whom he had not seen for nearly a decade.
