What do fingerprints reveal about your health risks? How do your cells defend against cancer?
Science has many of the answers — but not all.
When I was in my 40s, I got a tantalizing call from my father. He’d been browsing through an old footlocker and discovered letters from a great-great-uncle, Charles Kelley. They dated to 1922, when Charles had just been diagnosed with type I diabetes. At the time, the diagnosis was a death sentence.
Somehow this insurance man from Huron, South Dakota, made his way to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where doctors were testing a new drug. Charles was accepted as one of the guinea pigs. He noted that each day’s injection cost him a small fortune, though luckily he could afford it.
By the time the University of Toronto team of doctors that had invented insulin won a Nohel Prize, in 1923, Uncle Charles was back in Huron. The drug gave him 20 more years of life.
Needless to say, this family history was appealing to me.
When I was in my 20s, I returned home from college exhausted, and I went to see my doctor. He called the next day to tell me that I had type I diabetes. It was a shock, totally out of the blue. There was no known history of diabetes in my family.
For 20 years, I injected my insulin and took care of myself, but still I felt orphaned by my incomprehensible disease. Charles’s story changed that instantly.
As our story makes clear, scientists still don’t have answers for everything - far from it. No one will ever know what triggered the once-hidden vulnerability in my genes to surface. But I am grateful for the mysteries they have solved — and for my uncle Charles’s belated message across the generations that I wasn’t alone.
    4. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 1?
    A. To present a fact. B. To highlight a problem.
    C. To introduce a story. D. To evaluate an approach.
    5. Which of the following best explains “out of the blue” underlined in paragraph 6?
    A. Unexpected. B. Unpleasant.
    C. Unavoidable. D. Unchangeable.
    6. How did the author feel to his disease before hearing Charles’ story?
    A. Delighted. B. Lonely.
    C. Depressed. D. Thrilled.
    7. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
    A. Science Secret B. Charles’ Survival
    C. Incurable Disease D. Family Secret
C 5. A 6. B 7. D
根据第一段“What do fingerprints reveal about your health risks? How do your cells defend against cancer?(指纹揭示了你的健康风险?你的细胞如何抵御癌症?)”及下文讲述的作者的故事可推知,本段以问题的形式展开,其目的是为了引出作者的故事。故选C。
    【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第六段“He called the next day to tell me that I had type I diabetes. It was a shock, totally out of the blue. There was no known history of diabetes in my family.(第二天他打电话告诉我说我得了I型糖尿病。这是一个打击,完全out of the blue。我的家族中没有已知的糖尿病史)”可知,作者的家族中没有已知的糖尿病史,因此当作者听到自己患了I型糖尿病的消息时,完全没有料想到的。由此推知,划线词组此处指“意想不到的,出乎意料的”。故选A。
根据第七段“For 20 years, I injected my insulin and took care of myself, but still I felt orphaned by my incomprehensible disease. (20年来,我注射胰岛素,照顾自己,但我仍然觉得自己是一个孤儿,因为我患了一种难以理解的疾病)”可知,在作者看来,自己患了糖尿病,感觉自己很孤独。故选B。
    【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,由文章的第三至五段提到作者的叔叔患过糖尿病的信息和最后一段“As our story makes clear, scientists still don’t have answers for everything - far from it. No one will ever know what triggered the once-hidden vulnerability in my genes to surface. But I am grateful for the mysteries they have solved — and for my uncle Charles’s belated message across the generations that I wasn’t alone.(正如我们的故事所表明的那样,科学家们仍然没有找到所有问题的答案——远非如此。没有人会知道是什么触发了我基因中曾经隐藏的弱点浮出水面。但我很感激他们解开的谜团,也很感激我叔叔查尔斯给我的迟来的信息,那就是我并不孤单)”讲述作者发现自己的I型糖尿病是有家族史,由此推知,文章主要讲述了作者家族的秘密“有患糖尿病的病史”,因此文章的标题可以为“家族的秘密”。故选D。
    C
When you encounter animals, do you wonder what they’re thinking? Seeing a newborn lamb or acute puppy might stir up happy emotions in us, but what are they thinking?
Humans have a complex range of emotions, but it’s hard to tell what’s going on inside the heads of animals, mainly because they can’t verbalize their feelings. Perhaps it’s pets we think we understand most — as they are the animals we spend a lot of time with and therefore get to know best. Some of us own dogs because they are good companions, are loyal and seem to connect with us. We might even think they love us, although love could just be a human emotion. Professor Kim Bard, an expert in comparative developmental psychology from the University of Portsmouth, told the BBC: “We have a few studies now that actually show, scientifically... that dogs will respond with empathetic concern when their owner — but not a stranger — pretends to cry.”
Other non-domesticated animals might have feelings too. Giraffes and whales, for example, are known to experience grief when someone in their group dies. Farm animals we often eat, such as cows and chickens, are also believed to experience pain, joy and other emotions. Their wellbeing is now taken into consideration more. And in the UK, new legislation means all vertebrate (有脊椎的) animals and crustaceans (甲壳纲动物) will be recognized in law as sentient beings. It’s believed even tiny creatures like insects might have emotions as well. Research is beginning to show they experience a wide range of feelings. Writing for BBC Future website, Zaria Gorvett says “they can be optimistic, pessimistic, or frightened, and respond to pain just like any mammal would.”
Dr Barbara J King, Emerita Professor of Anthropology at the College of William and Mary, told the BBC: “If we understand the profound depths of emotions animals can feel, this should make us question the existence of zoos and slaughterhouses around the world, and rethink those systems.”
    8. Why is it hard to understand how animals are feeling?
A Because animals have a complex range of feelings.
    B. Because the feelings of animals are hard to detect.
    C. Because animals can’t express their feelings verbally.
    D. Because only some pets have feelings.
    9. According to Kim Bard, dogs may respond when their owners ________.
    A. keep them company B. can read their minds
    C. are no stranger to them D. are in low spirits
    10. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
    A. Non-domesticated animals experience grief when they witness killing.
    B. The feelings of farm animals will not be ignored by people from now on.
    C. The variety of feelings one animal has depends on its size.
    D. All animals are not considered as sentient beings legally in the UK.
    11. The text is most likely to be found in ________.
    A. a science magazine B. a personal diary
    C. a travel guide D. a biology textbook
C 9. D 10. D 11. A
根据第二段第一句“Humans have a complex range of emotions, but it’s hard to tell what’s going on inside the heads of animals, mainly because they can’t verbalize their feelings.”(人类有一系列复杂的情绪,但很难判断动物的大脑里在想什么,主要是因为它们无法用语言表达自己的感受。)
根据第二段最后一句中的“dogs will respond with empathetic concern when their owner — but not a stranger — pretends to cry”(当它们的主人(而不是陌生人)假装哭泣时,狗狗会以同理心的关心做出反应)可知,据金·巴德说,当主人情绪低落时,狗狗可能会有所反应。
根据第三段第五句“And in the UK, new legislation means all vertebrate (有脊椎的) animals and crustaceans (甲壳纲动物) will be recognized in law as sentient beings.”(在英国,新的立法意味着所有脊椎动物和甲壳类动物将在法律上被承认为有知觉的生物。)
根据第三段最后一句“Writing for BBC Future website, Zaria Gorvett says “they can be optimistic, pessimistic, or frightened, and respond to pain just like any mammal would.””(Zaria Gorvett在BBC未来网站上写道:“它们可以乐观、悲观或害怕,对疼痛的反应和其他哺乳动物一样。”) 故选A。
    D
Most of us want to be in peak physical condition, get in shape and be healthy. While some gym bunnies are more obsessed with looking ripped, for many of us nutrition and watching what you eat is a vital way to stay healthy. But when it comes to food, what is calorie counting, and what are the positives and negatives of it?
A law in the UK came into force in April 2022 that requires large businesses such as restaurants, takeaways, and cafes to display the calorie information of non-pre-packed food and soft drinks on their menus. It’s a strategy aimed to tackle obesity and give people a more informed choice of what goes down their gullets(食道). According to the NHS (National Health Service), generally, the recommended daily intake of calories for male adults is 2,500 per day, while female adults should consume 2,000 to maintain their weight levels. For those of us who wish to drop a few pounds, experts advise us to consume fewer calories than the recommended daily number, eat a balanced diet, and increase our levels of physical activity.
However, there are some skeptics when it comes to calorie counting. 200 calories of fresh fruit and 200 calories of junk food, for example cookies, have the same caloric value. However, there is a question of the health benefits of what you’re consuming, regardless of calories. While fresh fruit like apples contains things like vitamin C, junk food could contain an unhealthy level of sugar and fats. Likewise, fruit may fill you up and leave you not desiring more food for longer than a biscuit with equal calories - meaning, overall, you eat less. Simply counting calories, while useful for weight loss, doesn’t take into account your intake of good fats, carbohydrates, and proteins - things that your body needs. So, if you’re trying to stick to a low-carb diet, just looking at numbers of calories on a menu won’t be that useful. So, always be mindful that what you’re eating is part of a healthy balanced diet.
    12. What phenomenon is deseribed in the first paragraph?
    A. Addiction to working out in the gym.
    B. Inappropriate ways to stay healthy.
    C. Presence of attention to staying healthy.
    D. Impatience of calorie counting.
    13. What is important for losing weight according to the experts?
    A. Knowing the calories of various food.
    B. Taking in fewer calories than the recommended daily number.
    C. Trying different sports to increase the levels of physical activity.
    D. Eating as few calories as one can.
    14. It can be inferred from paragraph 3 that________.
    A. counting calories doesn’t take what your body needs into account
    B. the same caloric value doesn’t mean the same health benefits
    C. counting calories is merely useful for weight loss
    D. how much one eats is equally important to what one eats
    15. The passage is mainly about________
    A. how to do calorie counting B. whether calorie counts or not
    C. how calorie counting works D. whether we should count calorie
C 13. B 14. B 15. D
根据第一段“Most of us want to be in peak physical condition, get in shape and be healthy.”(我们大多数人都希望自己处于最佳状态,保持身材,保持健康)可知,这一段提到大多数人很关注自己的外形和身体健康。
根据第二段“For those of us who wish to drop a few pounds, experts advise us to consume fewer calories than the recommended daily number, eat a balanced diet, and increase our levels of physical activity.”(对于那些想减掉几磅的人,专家建议我们摄入比建议的每日热量少的热量,均衡饮食,增加身体活动水平)可知,专家建议要减重的人每天摄入的卡路里应低于每天的推荐量。
根据第三段“200 calories of fresh fruit and 200 calories of junk food, for example cookies, have the same caloric value. However, there is a question of the health benefits of what you’re consuming, regardless of calories.”(200卡路里的新鲜水果和200卡路里的垃圾食品,例如饼干,具有相同的热量值。然而,无论卡路里多少,你所摄入的食物对健康的益处都是个问题)和“Simply counting calories, while useful for weight loss, doesn’t take into account your intake of good fats, carbohydrates, and proteins - things that your body needs.”(简单地计算卡路里虽然有助于减肥,但并没有考虑到你摄入的优质脂肪、碳水化合物和蛋白质——这些都是你身体所需要的)推知,同等卡路里值并不意味相同的健康好处。
根据第一段“But when it comes to food, what is calorie counting, and what are the positives and negatives of it?”(但是,当谈到食物时,什么是卡路里计数,它的正面和负面是什么?)和最后一段“Simply counting calories, while useful for weight loss, doesn’t take into account your intake of good fats, carbohydrates, and proteins - things that your body needs. So, if you’re trying to stick to a low-earb diet, just looking at numbers of calories on a menu won’t be that useful. So, always be mindful that what you’re eating is part of a healthy balanced diet.”(简单地计算卡路里虽然有助于减肥,但并没有考虑到你摄入的优质脂肪、碳水化合物和蛋白质——这些都是你身体所需要的。
Researchers recently discovered that mosquitoes who have their sleep disrupted would rather get rest than go looking for their next meal. “____16____. Sleep deprived (睡眠不足) or not, a blood meal should appeal to them.” said the lead author of the study.
To study mosquitoes, researchers spent more than a year developing ways to analyze and quantify their amount of sleep. It was particularly challenging because of something researchers call the “observer effect”.____17____. In the case of mosquitoes, they’re able to sense that people are nearby due to their body heat, movement, smells and breath.
To deal with those circumstances, researchers set up the experiment in a quiet lab where the mosquitoes were several rooms away from anybody who might pass by. ____18____. Researchers found that the mosquitoes in the lab slept between 16 and 19 hours each day. They moved their enclosures regularly at night or during the day to make them suffer sleep deprivation. ____19____. But less than one-quarter wanted to eat after asleep less night.
____20____. By understanding the circadian rhythms of insects, researchers hope to find new methods to prevent the spread of infections. In fruit flies, a link between sleep and immunity (免疫力) has been established. And immunity is an important factor for disease transmission in mosquitoes. Based on this, this research would provide us with an understanding of the role of sleep on the disease transmission in mosquitoes.
    A. That was so natural
    B. It was a bit surprising
    C. Mosquitoes can spread serious diseases to humans
    D. They placed cameras and sensors in the room to record the mosquitoes without disturbing them
    E. The mosquitoes who were deprived of sleep went hunting for a blood meal wildly
    F. Most mosquitoes that got to sleep normally went hunting for a blood meal when they were awake
    G. This is when the act of just observing something can change its outcome
B 17. G 18. D 19. F 20. C
根据前文“Researchers recently discovered that mosquitoes who have their sleep disrupted would rather get rest than go looking for their next meal. (研究人员最近发现,睡眠被打乱的蚊子宁愿休息,也不愿去寻找下一顿饭)”再分析设空,可知,空处是研究人员说的话,应该是研究人员对这个发现的感受,根据下文“Sleep deprived or not, a blood meal should appeal to them.(不管是否睡眠不足,一顿血餐应该会吸引他们)”可知,这个结果是让他们惊讶的,所以B项“It was a bit surprising(这有点令人惊讶)”符合文意。故选B项。
    【17题详解】
根据前文“It was particularly challenging because of something researchers call the “observer effect”(由于研究人员所说的“观察者效应”,这项研究尤其具有挑战性)”可知此处提出一个新的概念“observer effect”,所以空处应该是对这个概念的解释,所以G项“This is when the act of just observing something can change its outcome.(这是指观察某事物的行为可以改变它的结果)”符合文意。故选G项。
根据前文“To deal with those circumstances, researchers set up the experiment in a quiet lab where the mosquitoes were several rooms away from anybody who might pass by. (为了应对这些情况,研究人员在一个安静的实验室里进行了实验,蚊子与任何可能路过的人都有几个房间的距离)”可知,此段是在说研究员如何解决观察者效应。由此推知,空处应是进一步说明方法,所以D项“They placed cameras and sensors in the room to record the mosquitoes without disturbing them.(他们在房间里放置了摄像头和传感器,在不打扰蚊子的情况下记录下蚊子的活动)”符合文意。故选D项。
根据前文“They moved their enclosures regularly at night or during the day to make them suffer sleep deprivation.(他们在夜间或白天定期移动笼子,扰乱它们的睡眠)”可知,此处讲述了研究员的研究过程,所以空处应说结果,所以F项“Most mosquitoes that got to sleep normally went hunting for a blood meal when they were awake(大多数正常睡眠的蚊子在醒着的时候会去觅食)”符合文意。故选F项。
根据段尾“Based on this, this research would provide us with an understanding of the role of sleep on the disease transmission in mosquitoes.(在此基础上,本研究将使我们了解睡眠在蚊子中疾病传播中的作用)”可知,本段主要讲蚊子会传播疾病,此项研究可以帮助我们了解睡眠在蚊子中疾病传播中的作用,所以C项“Mosquitoes can spread serious diseases to humans(蚊子可以将严重的疾病传播给人类)”符合文意。

故填a。
故填has conducted。
故填most useful。

故填while。

    【49题详解】
    考查it作形式主语。句意:提高学生的自律性是当务之急,家长和老师也应加强引导。分析句子结构和意思可知,这里考查it作形式主语,真正的主语是后面的不定式短语to improve their self-discipline。故填It。
    【50题详解】
    考查名词。句意:见第9题详解。分析句子结构和意思可知,这里考查名词作宾语,意为“引导”,是不可数名词。故填guidance。

    注意:1.每处错误及其修改均仅限一词;

With the homeworks finished last Saturday, I went to countryside to visit my uncle. At about 8, I set out and arrived at my uncle’s after an hour. Seeing me, he felt very exciting and welcomed me warmly. I handed him the fresh fruit and flowers bought in the supermarket but he gave me some snacks. Then we went to catch fish. It was not long since we caught a lot of fish. Have brought them home, my uncle cooked some for me. After lunch, I helped him bathing the dog and he praised me with a big smile in his face. When it was time for me to leave, my uncle gave me some gifts that I liked very much, and hugging me. It was an amazing day which I will never forget it forever.
    【答案】1. homeworks→homework 2. 在countryside前加the 3. exciting→excited 4. but→and
    5. since→before 6. Have→Having 7. bathing→bath 8. in→on 9. hugging→hugged
    10. 删除it
go to the countryside为固定短语。
故将but改为and。
It was not long before 后面加句子,意思是不久就……。 故将since改为before。
根据短语 help sb. do sth.
结合句意可知,笑容在某人脸上需要使用介词 on,即with a big smile on one’s face。故将 in改为on。
