I never knew anyone who'd grown up in Jackson without being afraid of Mrs. Calloway, our librarian. She ran Jackson's Carnegie Library absolutely by herself. SILENCE in big black letters was on signs hung everywhere. If she thought you were dressed improperly, she sent you straight back home to change your clothes. I was willing; I would do anything to read.
My mother was not afraid of Mrs. Calloway. She wished me 10o have my own library card to check out books for myself. She took me in to introduce me.“Eudora is nine years old (and has my permission to read any book she wants from the shelves ,children or adults," Mother said.
Mrs. Calloway made her own rules about books. You could not take back a book 1o the library on the same day you'd taken it out; she didn't care whether you'd read every word in it and needed another to start. You could take out two books at a time and two at most. So two by two, I read library books as fast as I could go, rushing them home in the basket of my bicycle. From the minute I reached our house, I started to read. I knew this was extreme happiness, and knew it at the time.
My mother shared this feeling of mine. Now, I think of her as reading s0 much of the tine while doing something else. I remember her reading a magazine while acting the Wolf in a game of “Little Red Riding Hood” with my brother's two daughters. She'd just look up at the right time, long enough to answer-“I will eat you, my dear," and go back to her place in the magazine article.
    24. Which of the following statements would Mrs. Calloway most likely agree with?
    A. Readers can speak aloud in her library.
    B. Readers can borrow one book every time.
    C. Readers can return a book to the library on the 8ame day they borrow it.
    D. Readers can take out any book they want from the shelves without returning it.
    25. Which can best describe Mrs. Calloway?
    A. Creative and helpful. B. Outgoing and patient.
    C. Silent and humorous. D. Strict and principled.
    26. What do the underlined words “this feeling" refer to in the last paragraph?
    A. Love for her job." B. Worries about the library rules.
    C. Eagerness to read. D. Admiration for Mrs. Calloway,
    27. What can be inferred about the author's mother according to the passage?
    A. She has a great passion for reading. B. She enjoys playing games with children.
    C. She is interested in playing the part of a wolf,
    D. She always forces the author to go to the library to read books.
    C
Science fiction often presents us with planets that speak a single language. However, that humans can express themselves in several thousand languages is a delight. Few would welcome the loss of this variety.
Unfortunately, the days in which English shares the planet with thousands of other languages are numbered. A traveler to the future is likely to notice two things about the language landscape of Earth. One, there will be fewer languages. Two, languages will be less complicated than they are today.
By 2115, it’s possible that only about 600 languages will be left on the planet as opposed to today's 6,000. Too often, colonization (殖民) has led to the disappearance of languages: Native speakers are punished for using their own languages. Urbanization has only furthered the destruction by bringing people away from their homelands to cities where a single language rules.
In addition, it is easy for speakers to as9ociate larger languages with opportunities and smaller ones with backwardness. Consequently , people stop passing on smaller languages to their children.
There are diligent efforts to keep endangered languages from dying. Sadly, few are likely to lead 1o
communities' raising children in the languages, which is the only way the languages exist as their full selves.
Instead, many communities create new versions of the languages, with smaller vocabularies and simpler grammar. The Irish Gaelic (盖尔语) proudly spoken by today's English-Gaelic bilinguals (会说两种语言的人) is an example.
We may regret the eclipse of a world where 6,000 different languages are spoken, but fortunately, it seems a large amount of linguistic diversity will be preserved.
    28. Paragraphs 3 to 5 mainly talk about___________
    A. the ways of saving endangered languages
    B. the influence urbanization will have on languages
    C. the factors that will lead lo there being fewer languages
    D. the reasons why parents don't teach their children smaller languages
    29. According to the article, the birth of the Irish Gaelic probably resulted from the effort to old ______.
    A. promote Irish culture B. prevent Gaelic from disappearing
    C. attract more people to learn Gaelic D. boost trades between Ireland and other countries
    30. What does the underlined word “eclipse" probably mean in the last paragraph?
    A. Lass. B. Circulation. C. Appearance. D. Structure.
    31. What does the passage mainly talk about?
    A. The ways to learn future languages.
    B. The evolution of languages over the coming century.
    C. The importance of preserving language diversity.
    D. The efforts linguists have made to save endangered languages.
    D
Many researchers use the term artificial intelligence (AI) to describe the thinking and intelligent behavior by machines. While AI can be helpful to human beings, scientists war it can also be a threat.
Stuart Russell, who leaches computer science at the University of California, t Berkeley, says
humans should make AI products that we like.“In the future," Russell says,“many of today's jobs that require a lot of physical labor will be replaced by machines with artificial intelligence." These include agricultural jobs, and ones with repetitive duties like: telephone call centers. AI machines can also replace jobs like ones in the financial industry-jobs that require studying a lot of data.
The health industry is one area that artificial intelligence is already changing. AI can process huge amounts of data, so doctors can use the most up-lo-date information to diagnose and treat patients. IBM's Watson technology is already in use at hospitals in North and South America, Europe and Asia. Watson helps doctors keep up with information.
IBM's Banavar points out the value of artificial intelligence, including search engines and the
    autopilot function on planes.
There is also a dangerous side of artificial intelligence. One example is combining drone technology and AI to create autonomous weapons. Stuart Russell is working to create international treaties to ban such weapons. He says the risk is that people will use the technology to develop a kind of “poor men's nuclear weapon" .
The debate about whether artificial intelligence is good or bad for humans continues. Researchers agree there is no question that the technology is here, and that will continue to change the life on our planet.
    32. What can be inferred from Russell's words in Para, 2?
    A. All the jobs will be replaced by machines with AI.
    B. Machines with AI are cleverer than people.
    C. People are tired of jobs requiring much physical labor
    D. Machines with AI will be a threat to people in terms of employment.
    33. Which of the following statements is the value of AI according to Banavar?
    A. AI can only act as search engines.
    B. AI can create autonomous weapons.
    C. AI can fly a plane on its own without the intervention of the pilot.
    D. AI can help doctors diagnose and treat all diseases.
    34. Which opinion may the researchers be in favor of?
    A. AI will make our life worse. B. AI is a double-edged sword.
    C. AI will disappear in the future. D. AI won't continue to change the life on the planet.
    35. What is the best title' of the text?
    A. AI: Helpful but Dangerous B. The Development of AI
    C. f AI: A Threat to Humans D. The Importance of AI

    24.B
根据第三段“You could take out two books at a time and two at most.”
I never knew anyone who’d grown up in Jackson without
being afraid of Mrs. Calloway, our librarian. She ran Jackson’s Carnegie Library absolutely by herself.SILENCE in big black letters was on signs hung everywhere. If she thought you were dressed improperly, she sent you straight back home to change your clothes.(我从来没有认识过一个在杰克逊长大却不害怕我们的图书管理员卡洛威夫人的人。
根据文章第三段及第四段“So two by two,I read library books as fast as I could go,rushing them home in the basket of my bicycle. From the minute I reached our house,I started to read.I knew this was extreme happiness, and knew it at the time.My mother shared this feeling of mine.(于是,我以 快的速度阅读图书馆的书籍,把它们放在自行车的篮子里赶回家。

故选 A。

    35.A 主旨题。 故选 A。

    W:Between 12 and 30 kilometers per hour.
M:I understand last year’s tour had 45,000 cyclists. How many do you expect this year?
W:The same as last year. And since we usually have so many participants, maybe I can take this opportunity to remind our listeners to sign up early. We filled up quickly last year, and we had to refuse a lot of applications.

    Text 10
M:Good morning, everybody.Today, for our program,we’re glad to have Mary Stone with us — a well-known writer in this country. She’s going to share with us her hurricane
experience. Now Mary, please tell us about it.
W:Well,it was our first hurricane since we moved to North Carolina. Before it came,we had continual day warnings of it from the radio, the TV and the newspapers for a week.We had to get everything out of the yard.We didn’t have a basement or a storeroom,so we put the yard furniture and waste containers into the garage. And we bought lots and lots of food and water. We even filled the bath with water. We also checked the flashlights and the small radio in case they couldn’t work. The hurricane was terrible. The rain was so heavy that we couldn’t see out the windows. The wind was about 80 miles an hour and it reached 100 miles an hour at times. It knocked down the power lines and we didn’t have electricity for two days.We were lucky.Only one tree came down in the back yard.I was so scared! Most of the time,I stayed in the bathroom. But my husband was more relaxed. He lit candles and listened to the news on the radio.
