The cafe, which nly pened a few days ag, charges custmers by time used, and is equipped with USB prts, cmputer stands, and free Wi-Fi. Struggling writers can als bring their wn fd and drinks, r have it delivered there since cffee and water are the nly things that they can get, but it’s pretty strict when it cmes t the actual writing.
When entering the cafe, custmers must write dwn at the receptin desk hw many wrds they plan t write and by what time they plan t finish. Every hur, a member f the staff will cme by t check n their prgress and apply a predetermined pressure level t help mve things alng.
Fr example, chsing the “S” level will have the cafe staff pushing yu t get the wrk dne mre ften, while the “M” level includes a milder way.
Hwever, the craziest rule f the Manuscript Writing Cafe is that writers are nt allwed t end their wrk until reaching their gal r until the place clses dwn fr the day, whichever cmes first. It’s nt clear hw the cafe carries ut this rule, but it is meant t keep custmers frm annuncing high targets that they wn’t be able t meet.

Can yu imagine there being a cmmunity where bys and girls grwing up tgether can finally speak different languages? In Ubang Nigeria, it really happens. It’s nt exactly clear what percentage f the wrds in the men’s and wmen’s languages are different, but there are enugh examples t make sentences sund different when spken by the ppsite sex. Fr “clthing”, men use the wrd “nki”, while wmen say “ariga”; “kitchi” means tree fr men, while wmen say “kweng”. These are nt just sme slight prnunciatin differences, but ttally different wrds. “It’s almst like tw different lexicns (词汇集),” a language expert, Chi Chi Undie said. “There are a lt f wrds that men and wmen share in cmmn, but there are thers which are ttally different depending n yur sex. They dn’t sund alike, and dn’t have the same letters. They are cmpletely different wrds.”
Interestingly, bth men and wmen are able t understand each ther perfectly in Ubang, as bth bys and girls grw up arund their parents and get t learn bth languages, but by the age f 10, bys are expected t speak in the male tngue. It seems that there is a stage the male will reach and he discvers he is nt using the rightful language. When he starts speaking the men’s language, yu knw the maturity is cming int him.
N ne really knws hw r why the duble-language traditin f Ubang began. Chi Chi Undie believes the tw languages are the result f a “duble-sex culture” where men and wmen perate in tw separate spheres (范围) and live in separate wrlds that rarely cme tgether. Hwever, she admits this is a weak thery, as the duble-sex culture is present in many parts f Africa, where there are n different languages fr men and wmen.
Tday, with English wrds cnstantly entering the lexicn f yung Nigerians, Ubang’s tw languages are in danger f being lst frever. Wrse still, neither the male nr female language is written dwn, s they bth rely n yung peple passing them dwn t the next generatin.
    8. What d we knw abut languages in Ubang?
    A. Wrd differences accunt fr a high percentage.
    B. Men and wmen speak ttally different languages.
    C. Wrd differences partly exist between the ppsite sex.
    D. Men and wmen prnunce differently n the same wrd.
    9. Why can men and wmen understand each ther easily in Ubang?
    A. Their lexicns sund alike.
    B. They learn bth languages at schl.
    C. The men can speak tw different languages.
    D. They are expsed t bth languages in their childhd.
    10. What des Chi Chi Undie want t explre in Paragraph 3?
    A. The change f duble-sex culture.B. The thery f duble-sex culture.
    C. The rigin f duble-language traditin.D. The sphere f duble-language traditin.
    11. Hw des the authr feel abut the disappearing languages in Ubang?
    A. Frightened.B. Cncerned.C. Cnfused.D. Stressed
    D

As spring turns int summer, we see peple sitting n the grass r benches — catching sme sun, having family picnics, r tapping away n their laptps and iPads. Just being in prximity t ther peple in Central Park gave us a sense f cmmunity — the sense that we wuld smehw persevere.
