While the United States celebrates Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November every year, some Americans mark the day with sadness. The United American Indians of New England call the national holiday a National Day of Mourning. They will mark the day in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the place where some of North America's first European settlers landed. Organizers describe the event as a time to remember “the genocide (种族灭绝) of millions of native people, the theft of native lands and the attack on native culture.”
Native American groups have been holding the National Day of Mourning since 1970. But they say their message is especially urgent now. That is because the town of Plymouth is getting ready to hold a number of events marking the settlers' arrival. The original settlers, known as the pilgrims (清教徒), first landed in the Native Americans' land, which is now Massachusetts, nearly 400 years ago. As the anniversary nears, the native people whose ancestors met the pilgrims want to make sure the world hears the whole story. The Wampanoag tribe helped the European settlers survive. Its members say the settlers brought diseases, racism and oppression.
On November 28, 2019, people Taking part in the National Day of Mourning gathered on Cole's Hill. The hill overlooks Plymouth Rock, a memorial to the colonists' arrival. The area also has a large statue of the Wampanoag leader in 1620. At the gathering, Native Americans from tribes around New England beat drums, offered prayers and read speeches. Then they marched through the streets of Plymouth joined by like-minded supporters.
Organizers said that the marchers called attention to the situation of missing and murdered native women. They also noted government action on migrants from Latin America and the detention (拘留) of children.
Paula Peter is a Wampanoag writer and activist. Peters sees progress in how Americans think about their history. They are starting to look past the false Thanksgiving story about pilgrims and natives living peacefully together, she says, She adds that the work of native groups continues to honor their ancestors. They are taking their history out of the margins and moving it to the center of attention.

Low-cost Gifts for Mother’s Day
Gift No. 1
Offer to be your mother’s health friend. Promise to be there for all doctor’s visits whether she has a disease or needs a regular medical check-up. Most mothers always say there is no need, but another set of eyes and ears is always a good idea at a doctor’s visit. The best part? This one is free.
Gift No. 2
Help your mother organize all of her medical records, which include the test results and medical information. Put them all in one place. Be sure to make a list of all of her medicines and what time she takes them. “Having all this information in one place could end up saving your mother’s life,” Dr. Marie Savard said.

Ten years after introducing “Google Glass”, Alphabet Inc. has created a new kind of smart eyeglasses. The company says the wearable computer device can translate different languages in real time.
A working model of the yet-unnamed device was presented to the public this week during the yearly Google I/O developer conference. Google did not say when the glasses might go on sale to the public.
The first Google Glass device included a wearable camera that could film what the wearers saw. That caused widespread privacy concerns. The camera element also gave Google Glass a kind of science-fiction look. The latest device looks more similar to traditional glasses.
A brief demonstration of the new eyeglasses described its translation ability, but did not provide additional details. The company also did not say whether the new device would be equipped with a camera. A demonstration explained that a person, wearing the glasses and talking with someone who speaks a different language, can see the spoken words in their own language. The description showed translations involving English, Mandarin, Spanish and American Sign Language.
The new device is one of several products shared at the conference that are currently in development. The company says the products aim to better connect Google services with activities happening in the real world. This includes company offerings for searching and viewing maps, as well as other services using the latest developments in artificial intelligence.
Eddie Chung, a director of product management at Google, spoke to developers about the new eyeglasses. “What we’re working on is technology that enables us to break down language barriers, taking years of research in Google Translate and bringing that to glasses,” he said.
8.What can we learn about the smart eyeglasses?

Why do we dream? It’s a question researchers have been studying for years. Now new research suggests that some dreams may result from the brain’s effort to keep learning, even as we sleep.
In a study in Boston,100 volunteers were trained for an hour on a maze(迷宫). They tried to find their way through the difficult puzzle as quickly as possible. Then half of the volunteers were allowed to sleep for 90 minutes. The other half stayed awake, reading or relaxing. The ones who slept were asked to describe their dreams when they woke up.
After the rest, the volunteers were asked again to solve the maze. Those who hadn’t slept showed no improvement or did even worse after the break. Sleepers who didn’t report any mazerelated dreams did better but showed only a little improvement. However, four naptakers who reported dreaming about the maze showed a surprising improvement. They scored 10 times higher after sleeping and dreaming about the maze.
Even though the number of dreamers was small, the researchers noted that the gap in learning between the dreamers and nondreamers was so wide that the finding was significant(有意义的).
The dreamers had all performed poorly on the test before dreaming about it. That suggests that struggling with a task might be the trigger that leads the sleeping brain to focus on it and work on how to deal with it.
“It’s almost as if your brain is going through everything that happened today,” Dr Stickgold, a scientist at Harvard Medical School, said. ”The things you’re obsessed(迷住) with are the ones that your brain forces you to continue to do with. ”
12.What were the volunteers asked to do after the rest?
A.To work on a new maze.
B.To continue to do the maze.
C.To talk with each other about their dreams.
D.To tell what they thought about the maze.
13.According to the study, which group showed the greatest improvement?
A.Those who didn’t sleep.
B.Those who slept but didn’t dream.
C.Those who dreamed about the maze while sleeping.
D.Those who thought about the maze before falling asleep.
14.The underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 5 probably means “_______”.
A.chance B.cause
C.way D.idea

Talking to someone on a train, bus, or subway can be risky yet exciting, as you never know when they're going to get off. Here are some useful tips.
Make eye contact. Making brief eye contact can show the person that you're interested and help you judge whether they are interested in you. ____16____ If they look away quickly or appear disinterested, it's probably best not to approach.
____17____ If the person looks at you once more, this is a good sign that they notice you and want to interact with you. When making eye contact, keep your facial expression light and friendly, rather than straight and serious.
Smile at them. If you are successful, smile at the person. A small but genuine smile makes you appear interested, friendly, and approachable. If the other person smiles back, you’re likely in luck in getting them to talk to you.
Use open body language. ____18____ Do this by keeping your arms uncrossed. Stand or sit up straight and show good posture (姿势).
____19____ Once you’ve read the other person to see if they’re interested in conversing (交谈), make a move. If you're far away, move closer. You should keep a comfortable distance where you can hear each other yet not feel awkward if the conversation doesn't work out. Find a seat near them, yet don't crowd them.
If they're standing, stand near enough to them to be able to speak with them, but don't get too close for comfort. If there's a seat next to them, ask, “May I sit here?" Try not to be nervous. Many people are just as excited to chat with new people as you are. If they engage, then keep it up! ____20____
A.Notice how they respond.
B.Approach the person to start talking to them.
C.As you can see, your body language speaks for itself.
D.Try to make eye contact again after about 30 seconds.
E.Eye contact is the act of looking into someone's eyes.
F.Make a point to appear open, comfortable, and available.
G.You'll meet some people and perhaps even make some friends.

第二节(满分25 分)
47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the old lady’s birthday. She got up early to be ready for the post. From the second floor flat she could see the postman when he came down the street, and a little boy, Johnnie, brought up her letters from the ground floor on the rare occasions when anything came.
Today she was sure there would be something. Myra wouldn’t forget her mother’s birthday, even if she seldom wrote at other times. Of course Myra was busy. Her husband had been made an important position in the government and Myra herself had got a medal for her work for the aged.
The old lady was proud of Myra, but Enid was the daughter she loved. Enid had never married, but had seemed happy to live with her mother and teach in a primary school round the corner.
One evening, however, Enid said, “I’ve arranged for Mrs. Morrison to look after you for a few days, Mother. Tomorrow I have to go into hospital — just a minor operation. I’ll be home.”
In the morning she went, but never came back — she died on the operating table. Since then Myra had been to see her mother three times, but her husband, Harold, never.
The old lady was eighty today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps — perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday, another decade lived or tolerated just as you chose to look at it. Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of colour brightened her cheeks. She was excited like a child. She would enjoy her day!

46.Last Sunday I visited the exhibition of students' traditional Chinese paintings held by our school.
It is said that the exhibition will last for a month in the school art center. Lots of works on display there range from landscape paintings to flower-and-bird paintings. I was impressed by the splendid scenery. I was impressed by the vivid civil life the paintings portrayed. I really appreciate the wonderful works by those gifted student painters.
I heartily recommend this exhibition to you. I'm sure it will arouse your interest in Chinese painting, which will help you have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture.
47.One possible version:
Now, she stood by the window, watching. The postman turned round the corner on his bicycle. Her heart beat fast. Then clatter (咔嗒声), clatter up the stairs. Finally, she got her post — a closed envelope, in Myra’s writing. The old lady felt a sharp pain of disappointment. There was no parcel for her! Maybe the parcel was too large to come by letter post. That was it. It would come later by parcel post. She said to herself. She must be patient.
Almost unwillingly she tore the envelope open. Folded in the card was a piece of paper. Written on the card was a message under the printed Happy Birthday — Buy yourself something nice with the cheque, Myra and Harold. The cheque moved quickly to and fro in the air to the floor like a bird with a broken wing. Slowly the old lady struggled to pick it up. Her present! Her lovely present! With trembling fingers she tore it into little bits.
