Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have decided to get our hands dirty and get into gardening, but did indoor plants purify (净化)air?

In an often-cited 1989 NASA report, a scientist Bill Wolverton claimed that household plants could provide a 41 promising economical solution to indoor air pollution." However, more recent researches have poured cold water on the idea.

Scientists studying the effectiveness of indoor plants for the passive removal of air pollution, found houseplants make "at best, modest contributions of about 0.9-9% to indoor pollution removal effectiveness," they reported in 2017 in the Journal of Building and Environment. The tests, performed in a laboratory to simulate the effects on a typical U.S. home, found houseplants hardly affected the environment. To make a meaningful difference to the air quality of your home, you'd need to fill a room from top to bottom with plants, they suggest. While a single spider plant won't purify the air, a green wall covered in plants just might, found scientists in a study published in 2020 in the Journal of Environmental Management.

While the benefits of plants purifying the air arc less certain, a recent study from Princeton University finds that gardening is beneficial for physical and mental health. Another study found that indoor gardening lowered stress responses compared to the demands of completing a computer task.

Although plants can make your home a more pleasant environment and taking care of them can have mental health benefits, it's unlikely they'll do much to purify the air — unless you're going to buy hundreds. So if you're concerned about air quality in your home, we'll advise you to invest in an air purifier.

    19. What can we infer about the 1989 NASA report?

    A. It agreed with the latest research.

    B. It had a great impact on the economy.

    C. It suggested plants purified indoor air.

    D. It provided much evidence for experiments.

    20. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?

    A. The recent studies on air quality.

    B. The healthy benefits of gardening.

    C. Professors' views on indoor pollution.

    D. Comparison between gardening tasks.

    21. How should we remove indoor air pollution according to the text?

    A. By using an air purifier.

    B. By growing particular plants.

    C. By improving gardening skills.

    D. By decorating walls with plants.

In a year that has been characterized by the restriction, there arc two activities ! have found myself doing more of: running and writing.

At first glance, these two passions seem o be completely opposite. When I write, I'll retreat (缩进)into my head, where I dig memories, ideas, characters to shape into stories. When I run, I’ll fully inhabit my body. The sounds and feelings of physical effort — foot strike, heartbeat and sweat — drown out the thoughts.

Despite their differences, though, there are similarities. Running and writing are both things we do alone. They both demand at times that we dig deep, keep going and never give up. I've also found that running can be complementary to writing. If I've been sat for hours, there's nothing more restorative than getting out for a run. Sometimes when I'm least expecting it, solutions to tricky twists present themselves and ideas drop in as if the movement of running has itself shaken things into place. On the other hand, running especially long-distances has taught me to be brave, to look inside myself to see if there's more to give. It has also taught me patience.

I'm far from the first runner to notice that running can help the writing process. Reflecting on her writing methods in an article in The New York Times, author and lifelong runner Joyce Oates wrote: Running seems to allow me, ideally, to have an expanded consciousness in which I can imagine what I'm writing as a film or a dream. I can't say there is an expanded consciousness when I put on my trainers after a hard day's writing, but there's some evidence that working up a sweat can also fire up the imagination.

It's not clear what's behind the creativity though increased oxygen to the brain has been shown to help cognitive processes, so there's no reason to think it's useless. Whatever the link between running and creativity is, next time I find myself struggling to find the right words in the face of a deadline, I'll run for it.

    (以下是A种题型)

    22. What docs running contribute to the author's writing process?

    A. Exhaustion and challenges.

    B. Relaxation and consciousness.

    C. Affection and physical benefits.

    D. Inspiration and creative solutions.

    23. What docs the underlined word " complementary" mean in paragraph 3?

    A. Really helpful.

    B. Clearly different.

    C. Negatively related.

    D. Potentially dangerous.

    24. What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph?

    A. She is stressed over struggles and deadlines.

    B. She challenges the claim that running improves creativity.

    C. She is determined to find out why running helps creativity.

    D. She will keep running in order to help her writing process.

    25. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. What I Have Learned From Running

    B. Running May Fire up the Imagination

    C. Differences Between Running and Writing

    D. Science Says Running Is Good for Ones Health

    (以下是B种题型)

    22. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?

    23. What did the author learn from long-distance running?

    24. Why did the author mention Joyce Oates?

    25. How does running influence the author's writing?

Learning how to be funny can make your entire life much more enjoyable. While some people are naturally funny, others have to work at it. 26 Although there is no absolute way to get funnier overnight, there are some little tips you can practice to improve your sense of humor.

    Exaggerate characters

To attract people to you, you need to learn how to make people laugh. 27 Exaggerate one of your features, an object around you, or something someone is wearing. Use an adjective that's a little too strong to exaggerate the situation.

    Change your vocal tone (声调)

Being able to speak in an amusing way is an important social skill that can make people laugh. Yet, most people tend to have a neutral tone of voice when speaking, which can make it hard to notice a humorous meaning behind their words. 28

Test out jokes on others if you can

Is it hard for you to find funny things to say? 29 The solution is to practice your jokes in front of others. Everyone has an inner comedian and they need io learn how to let it out. For some, the idea of trying out jokes seems scary, but if you can do it in a safe environment, it can be a great way to learn hew to crack people up.

    Make it simple

30 If they don't understand, they will not laugh. What makes a joke funny is not its complexity or depth, but its simplicity. A result of this is that the more you try to force a joke to be funny, the more it will fall flat on its face.

    A. The best tool to use is some overstatements.

    B. Not everyone will understand complex jokes.

    C. Also, use your tone of voice to enhance the joke.

    D. Are you nervous about what others think of your jokes?

    E. By practicing, you can make your voice funnier to others.

    F. What's the most proven way to develop a sense of humor?

    G. You will be surprised at how effective a simple story can be.
