When I was 9, we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived at Heathrow, London on a gray January morning. Everyone in the family settled quickly into the city except me. Without my beloved beaches and endless blue—sky days, I felt at a loss and out of place. Until I made a discovery.
Southbank, at an eastern bend in the Thames, is the center of British skateboarding, where the continuous crashing of skateboards left your head ringing .I loved it. I soon made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our own language. And my favorite: Safe. Safe meant cool. It meant hello. It meant don't worry about it. Once, when trying a certain trick on the beam(横杆), I fell onto the stones, damaging a nerve in my hand, and Toby came over, helping me up: Safe, man. Safe. A few minutes later, when I landed the trick, my friends beat their boards loud, shouting: " Safe! Safe! Safe!" And that's what mattered—landing tricks, being a good skater.
When I was 15, my family moved to Washington. I tried skateboarding there, but the locals were far less welcoming. Within a couple of years, I'd given it up.
When I returned to London in 2004, I found myself wandering down to Southbank, spending hours there. I've traveled back several times since, most recently this past spring. The day was cold but clear: tourists and Londoners stopped to watch the skaters. Weaving(穿梭)among the kids who rushed by on their boards, I found my way to the beam. Then a rail—thin teenager, in a baggy white T—shirt, skidded(滑)up to the beam. He sat next to me. He seemed not to notice the man next to him. But soon I caught a few of his glances. "I was a local here 20 years ago," I told him. Then, slowly, he began to nod his head. "Safe, man. Safe."
    "Yeah," I said. "Safe."
    24. What can we learn about the author soon after he moved to London?
A.He felt disappointed. B.He gave up his hobby.
C.He liked the weather there. D.He had disagreements with his family.
    25. What do the underlined words "Safe! Safe! Safe!" probably mean?
    A.Be careful! B.Well done! C.No way! D.Don't worry!
    26. Why did the author like to spend time in Southbank when he returned to London?
A.To join the skateboarding. B.To make new friends.
C.To learn more tricks. D.To relive his childhood days
    27. What message does the author seem to convey in the text?
A.Children should learn a second language.
B.Sport is necessary for children's health.
C.Children need a sense of belonging
D.Seeing the world is a must for children.
    C
When asked about happiness,we usually think of something extraordinary,an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer the older we get.
For kids, happiness has a magical quality.Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved (毫无掩饰的).
In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes.Suddenly it’s conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity.I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party.
In adulthood the things that bring deep joy—love, marriage, birth—also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated (复杂的).
My definition of happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”.The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It’s easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even good health.
I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday.First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunch-box and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband came home,I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.
Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work.I don’t think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this is what satisfied her.
We,however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing we’ve got to have. We’re so self-conscious about our “right” to it that it’s making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren’t necessarily happier.
Happiness isn’t about what happens to us—it’s about how we see what happens to us.It’s the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It’s not wishing for what we don’t have, but enjoying what we do possess.
    28. As people grow older,they .
A.will take fewer risks in pursuing happiness B.associate their happiness less with others
C.feel it harder to experience happiness D.tend to believe responsibility means happiness
29.What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 5 and 6?
A.She cares little about her own health. B.She is easily pleased by things in daily life.
C.She enjoys the freedom of traveling. D.She prefers getting pleasure from housework.
30.People who equal happiness with wealth and success .
A.consider pressure something blocking their way B.are more likely to be happy
C.are at a loss to make correct choices D.aren’t necessarily happier
    31. What can be concluded from the passage?
A.Happy is he who is content.
B.Each man is the master of his own fate.
    C.Success leads to happiness.
D.Happiness lies between the positive and the negative.
    D
Recently I paid a visit to Harvard University, where there are topclass scientists and professors and the best academic system in the world. I was very shocked when I first stepped onto the campus. Well, it's not even really a campus. It's more like an area in a small town.
Harvard's main buildings are from the 18thcentury.They look very old and simple. You might even say they're a little shabby(破旧).They don't fit the modern idea of university at all. The buildings are surrounded by grass and trees, so I felt as if I had walked into a castle of the MidAges. But when I looked across the street, the busy shops and infashion(时尚的) students made me feel like I was in the 21st century again. It creates a strong contrast and brings a special atmosphere to the school.
Our tour guide Gary took us around and told us,“You see this grass field in the center of the school? Here is where they hold their graduation ceremony. They just set up tents and benches and have a very simple ceremony.” It's unbelievable!Who would think the most talented students just graduate on the grass?
I saw some students put a blanket on the grass and lie down to read a book. When I listened to the soft sound of pages turning, along with the singing of the birds, I felt very calm. There was no competitive feeling at all. Harvard has the world's first computer in its science centre and there are hundreds of highend computers, too. Its religion(宗教) and the literature departments are also among the best. It is the perfect mix of tradition and new technology. It makes Harvard a very attractive place to study in.
I hope one day I'll attend my dream school—Harvard.
32.Why was the author quite shocked when he first stepped into the campus of Harvard University?
A.Because he/she was lost on the campus of the university.
B.Because it is more like an area in a small town.
C.Because there is the best academic system in the world.
D.Because he/she met with so many top class scientists and professors.
    33.We learn from Paragraph 2 that ________.
A.the writer walked into a castle of the MidAges at Harvard
B.it was not easy for the writer to find modern buildings at Harvard
C.Harvard's main buildings date back to about three centuries ago
D.the writer bought some souvenirs in the busy shops across the street
34.What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.Graduation ceremonies are simple at Harvard.
B.Students like to get together in the center of the school.
C.The most talented students would love to study at Harvard.
D.Students at Harvard often set up tents and benches in the grass field.
35.What makes Harvard a very attractive place to study in according to the author?
    A.The competitive feeling.
B.The teaching of religion and the literature.
C.That there are hundreds of highend computers.
D.That tradition and new technology are perfectly mixed.

On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled(骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. "Man, that’s a big dog!" he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac’s relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac’s bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶).
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easily caught up and the wolf’s teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

    56. 【解析】resting。此处句子结构应是spend time (in) doing。

    Paragraph 1:
The car abruptly stopped in front of him. Paul and Becky got out of the car immediately to offer help. But with their bare hands, they didn’t dare to fight with the wolf. However, they still approached the wolf bravely. At the same time, the wolf also noticed them and turned to look at them, shouting loudly at them. Mac then jumped down from the bicycle and was ready to fight against the wolf. That reached a deadlock.
    Paragraph 2:
A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. They found the dangerous situation. Mac’s friends also jumped down from their bicycles and joined the fight with the wolf. More and more cars stopped. Some drivers took out the sticks from the cars, and some took out the knives towards the wolf. Just at that time, the wolf might feel the threats from the people, starting to withdraw. Soon, it ran away and disappeared in the distance.

    Text 8
M: Hello, doctor, may I come in?
W: Sure, please. How can I help you?
M: My wife doesn't have appetite. She has been eating just little food for the last three days.
W: Well, let me check her medical card. She has been hospitalized for a week, hasn't she?

    W: Of course it does.
М: Last week there was a scientist saying that the Earth's climate has always been changing. Animals become extinct.. it's got nothing to do with humans.
W: Do you know who he works for?
M: No. The Science Museum or a university, I suppose.
W: He works for a big car company. Some companies don't want us to make the connection between what humans do and environmental problems. If we do, we'll buy fewer cars and use less oil, and they'll make less money.

W: Good and then we'll go and buy you some bags so you can start recycling.
    Text 10
W: This is Scientific American 60-Second Science. I'm Karen Hopkin.
The rise in technology, particularly for information and communication, is completely transforming lifestyles. For example, many people can now work from home and still be in almost constant contact with the office. Or maybe you prefer your own couch
for watching a recently released movie rather than going to the local theater.
"This technology causing lifestyle changes affects how people consume energy and ultimately affects the energy demand of the nation."

Ashok Sekar, a postdoctoral(博土后的) fellow at the University of Texas at Austin. To assess how our changing usage of technology might change our energy consumption, Sekar and his colleagues first set out to determine how much more we re in our homes than we were in the past.

For more than a decade, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has surveyed how Americans spend their time each day. More than 11,000 citizens respond to the survey each year.
Analyzing the numbers from this survey, the researchers found that Americans are definitely staying more hours in their living rooms.
