Days after Argentina canceled all international passenger flights to protect the country from the new
coronavirus, Juan Manuel Ballestero began his journey home the only way possible: He stepped aboard his

small sailboat for what turned out to be an 85-day odyssey across the Atlantic.
The 47-year-old sailor could have stayed put on the tiny Portuguese island of Porto Santo, but the idea of spending what he thought could be “the end of the world” away from his family, especially his father who was soon to turn 90, was unbearable. So he loaded his 29-foot sailboat with canned fish, fruit and rice and set sail in
mid-March.
“I didn’t want to stay like a coward on an island where there were no cases,” Mr. Ballestero said. “I wanted to do everything possible to return home. The most important thing for me was to be with my family.”
Friends tried to dissuade Mr. Ballestero from starting the perilous journey, and the authorities in Portugal
warned him he might not be allowed to re-enter if he ran into trouble and had to turn back. But he was determined, “I bought myself a one-way ticket and there was no going back,” he said.
Sailing can be a lonely passion, and it was particularly so on this voyage for Mr. Ballestero, who each
night tuned into the news on a radio for 30 minutes to assess how the virus was spreading across the globe. “I kept thinking about whether this would be my last trip,” he said.
When he made it to his native Mar del Plata, on June 17, he was surprised by the hero’s welcome he
received. “Entering my port where my father had his sailboat, where he taught me so many things about how to sail, gave me the taste of a mission accomplished,” he said. A medical professional administered a test for Covid-19 on the dock. Within 72 hours, after the test came back negative, he was allowed to set foot on Argentine soil.
While he didn’t get to celebrate his father’s 90th birthday in May, he did make it home in time for Father’s

Liao Wentao, a pet undertaker, put the body of 2-year-old Garfield on a small bed surrounded by flowers. Then he let the cat’s owner say a last goodbye before cremation (火化). “We send off 400 to 500 pets each year,

Keeping pets has become a trend for young people in China and people are more than willing to pay for

whatever their pets need. From 2019 to 2021, China’s pet market grew by almost 18% and hit 348.8billion yuan in value in 2021, according to a report by Research Consulting Group.
As the pet economy develops, animal lovers’ various needs have boosted the emergence and development
of related businesses such as bathing, pet food, pet beauty and healthcare.
In addition to basic services, pet owners are increasingly paying for many new services, such as training,
pet funerals, insurance, photography and entertainment. The growing pet market has also given birth to a large number of new pet-related jobs, noted CCTV News.
Liu Wei, 33, is a famous pet detective in Shanghai. He and his team work on finding families’ lost pets.
“We have successfully helped find more than 1,000 pets. Besides cats and dogs, there are other pets like birds, lizards and hamsters,” Liu said. “In many big cities, cats and dogs have become an important part of many families and are taken good care of. So what we look for are not just pets, but family members.”
Apart from pet undertakers and detectives, some people work as pet food testers, pet sitters and pet
trainers. According to Tu Di, secretary—general of the Hunan Pet Industry Association, the booming pet market shows people’s improved living standards.

Engineers have launched a huge garbage collection device to gather plastic material floating in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii.
The plastic makes up what is called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is the world’s largest spread of
garbage, at twice the size of the state of Texas.
The organization Ocean Cleanup created the collection device, whose founder is Boyan Slat, a 24-year-old inventor from the Netherlands.
Slat was just 16 years old when he was moved to clean up the oceans. Last Saturday, a ship pulling the
pipe-shaped floating barrier left San Francisco for the Garbage Patch. The barrier, called the floater, is 600 meters across. Attached to it is a screening skirt that hangs three meters down in the water.

The screen is designed to collect the plastic as it moves through the water. Sea animals can safely swim under the barrier.
The cleanup system also comes with lights powered by the sun, cameras, and other special devices. So the
system can communicate its position at all times. That way a support ship can find it every few months to remove the plastic it has collected.
“The free-floating barriers are made to survive extreme weather conditions and damage from continue use.
They will stay in the water for twenty years and in that time collect 90 percent of the garbage in the patch,” Slat added.
George Leonard is the chief scientist. He expressed concern about the cleaning project. He said even if
plastic garbage can be taken out of the oceans, more continues to enter the water each year. He also raised concern that animals might be captured by the net hung below the surface.
But, Boyan Slat said he did not think that would happen. The system will act as a “big boat that stands still
in the water”, with nothing for sea creatures to get caught in.

Days after Argentina canceled all international passenger flights to protect the country from the new
coronavirus, Juan Manuel Ballestero began his journey home the only way possible: He stepped aboard his

So he loaded his 29-foot sailboat with canned fish, fruit and rice and set sail in

“I didn’t want to stay like a coward on an island where there were no cases,” Mr. Ballestero said. “I wanted to do everything possible to return home. The most important thing for me was to be with my family.”
Friends tried to dissuade Mr. Ballestero from starting the perilous journey, and the authorities in Portugal
warned him he might not be allowed to re-enter if he ran into trouble and had to turn back. But he was determined, “I bought myself a one-way ticket and there was no going back,” he said.
Sailing can be a lonely passion, and it was particularly so on this voyage for Mr. Ballestero, who each
night tuned into the news on a radio for 30 minutes to assess how the virus was spreading across the globe. “I kept thinking about whether this would be my last trip,” he said.
When he made it to his native Mar del Plata, on June 17, he was surprised by the hero’s welcome he
received. “Entering my port where my father had his sailboat, where he taught me so many things about how to sail, gave me the taste of a mission accomplished,” he said. A medical professional administered a test for Covid-19 on the dock. Within 72 hours, after the test came back negative, he was allowed to set foot on Argentine soil.

Engineers have launched a huge garbage collection device to gather plastic material floating in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii.
The plastic makes up what is called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is the world’s largest spread of
garbage, at twice the size of the state of Texas.
The organization Ocean Cleanup created the collection device, whose founder is Boyan Slat, a 24-year-old inventor from the Netherlands.
Slat was just 16 years old when he was moved to clean up the oceans. Last Saturday, a ship pulling the
pipe-shaped floating barrier left San Francisco for the Garbage Patch. The barrier, called the floater, is 600 meters across. Attached to it is a screening skirt that hangs three meters down in the water.

The screen is designed to collect the plastic as it moves through the water. Sea animals can safely swim under the barrier.
The cleanup system also comes with lights powered by the sun, cameras, and other special devices. So the

“The free-floating barriers are made to survive extreme weather conditions and damage from continue use.
They will stay in the water for twenty years and in that time collect 90 percent of the garbage in the patch,” Slat added.

Without thinking, she put the pen in her pocket and saw who it was. Jane, her other friend, was returning to the classroom. Riya immediately ran out
from the back door noiselessly and went to the playground to pray.
The morning prayers finished, everyone went to class, followed by their teacher Grace. The moment Mary found her pen was missing, she got annoyed.Without delay, she ran to the front and complained to Grace, saying in tears,“Someone must have stolen my new pen.”
Having quietened the noisy class, Grace asked them who was in the classroom during the prayers. Almost
everyone pointed at Jane, who explained she just felt uncomfortable when praying and came back to rest. Grace asked Jane if she had taken Mary's new pen, to which Jane said no firmly, insisting she knew nothing about that

Everything happened fast and unexpectedly before Riya suddenly realized the pen was still in her pocket. She froze on the spot, afraid of being treated as a thief.

But Riya knew what was the right thing to do. She didn't intend to take the pen in her pocket as her own. However, the mistake she made unknowingly caused great trouble and pain to both Mary and Jane. Guilty but
determined, Riya came over to Grace, took out the pen and admitted bravely, “I'm sorry. It was I who took
Riya's pen.” Grace opened her mouth wide, astonished and confused. “How could it be?” she asked doubtfully.
Then Riya gave a detailed account of the whole story, after which she added sincerely, “I need to apologize to Jane and Mary.”
Grace nodded and patted Riya on the back with a relieved smile. Riya walked up and held Jane's hand,
comforting her gently, “Jane, it's my fault to have you suspected.” Tears giving way to smiles, Jane hugged Riya tightly. Then Riya returned Mary the pen and made genuine apologies. With the whole class watching quietly, Grace gave a speech they would never forget, “Riya is honest and brave to admit her mistake. We are humans so we can all make mistakes. But we should realize our mistakes and correct them, like Riya.” Everyone present smiled at Riya and applauded her honesty and courage.

(2)所使用词汇和语法结构的准确性、恰当性和多样性。
(3)上下文的衔接和全文的连贯性。
3.评分时，先根据作答的整体情况初步确定其所属档次，然后以该档次的要求来综合衡量， 确定或调整档次，最后给分。
4.评分时还应注意：
(1)词数少于120的，酌情扣分。
(2)书写较差，以至影响交际的，酌情扣分。
(3)单词拼写和标点符号是写作规范的重要方面，评分时应视其对交际的影响程度予以考虑。英、美拼写和词汇用法均可接受。
