【Enjy in class】
There are abut 80,000,000 mines under the grund in mre than 60 cuntries. It is difficult and dangerus t clear these mines. Abut 50 peple including many children were killed r hurt each day. In 2003，APOPO，a Dutch research cmpany that trains the animals, came up with the idea f using rats t search fr the mines.
The animal trainers fund that a kind f rats frm Africa were clever and had a sharp sense f smell. The rats were abut 75 cm lng and weighed abut 1.35 kg, light enugh t run acrss a minefield withut setting ff the mines.
In January 2004，the APOPO started this prject. First, the trainers let the 4-week-ld baby rats get familiar with humans. A few weeks later，the rats were n lnger afraid f peple and the things arund them. Then they were trained t cnnect a click sund with fd. After the rats had learned that, the trainers then taught them t tell the difference between the smell f mines and ther smells. When the rats culd d it，the click was sunded and they were given a bit f banana. The methd was called clicker training.“The training isn’t easy,” said the trainer Abdullah Mchmvu. “Yu have t be patient. Smetimes I get angry, but then again, I tell myself these are animals.”[
After nine mnths’ training, the rats were taken t a minefield. They ran acrss the minefield, stpped, sat and scratched the grund t tell the deminers that they smelt ut a mine. Then the mine was cleared. It had taken tw deminers a day t clear a 200 m2 minefield, but with the help f tw rats they culd finish it in tw hurs.
The rats and the demines saved thusands f lives.“The rats did this jb much better than we expected. S far they have helped t make almst 2,000,000 m2 f land safe. They are heres,” said Bart Weeqens, the head f the APOPO.
