How to choose train types

When you’re buying China train  tickets online, you’ll notice that the journey duration differs  depending on

which type of train  you choose. China train types can  be recognized by their letter codes  G, D and C trains are

high-speed trains, while Z, T and K are slower or overnight trains. China’s high-speed trains run between Chinese

provincial capitals and first-tier Chinese cities. G trains (high-speed trains, standing for gāotiě) are China’s bullet

trains—the fastest trains with a maximum speed of 400 km／h. Tickets for these trains are the most expensive.

How to read train tickets

When reading your  train ticket, please take note  of the Chinese characters and  Pinyin printed next to your

departure / arrival city. Directions (North, South, East, and West) appear in Pinyin (Bei, Nan, Dong,  and Xi), not

English. Please make sure you are going to the correct train station.

“Everything happens for the best.” My mother said whenever things weren’t going my way.“Don’t   worry.

One day your luck will change.”

Mother was right, as I discovered after I had finished my college education. I had decided to try for a job in a

radio station. One  day, I wanted to host  a sports program. I went  to Chicago and knocked  at the door of  every

station. But I got turned down every time.

In one station, a kind  lady said my problem was that I hadn’t  got enough experience. “Get some work in  a

small station and work your way up,” she said.

I went back home. I couldn’t get a job there, either. Then my dad told me a businessman had opened a store

and needed someone to help him. But again, I didn’t get the job.

I felt really down. “Your luck will change,” Mom said to me. Dad lent me the car to help me to look for my

job. I tried another radio station in Iowa. But the owner, a nice man, told me he had already had someone.

As I left his office, I asked, “How can someone be a sports announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station?”

I was waiting for the  lift when I heard the man called, “What did  you mean? Do you know anything about

football?” He put me in front of a microphone and asked me to try to imagine  that I was giving my opinion on a

football game. I succeeded.

On my  way home,  Mom’s words came  back to  me, “One  day your luck  will change,  Son. And when  it

New  England  is  the  six  northeastern  states  of  the  United  States:  Maine,  New Hampshire,  Vermont,

Massachusetts, Rhode  Island, and  Connecticut. The  six states were  among the  first colonies  in America. The

colonies were ruled by England, and this is how the area became known as New England. After the Revolutionary

War the colonies became states.

Many things  are similar in  the six New  England states. For  example, there are  many stone walls, fishing

villages and  forests in these  states. The houses  and buildings are  similar, too. People  cut down trees from  the

forests to make space for their farms and villages.

They then used wood from the trees  and stones from the field to build houses, schools, and churches.  Even

today, most of the houses in New England are made of wood.

There are big cities in New England, but there are also small cities and farms, especially in the northern part.

There is much industry and business and New England is one of the most populous parts of the United States. It

has many busy seaports on its long coast. There are always many tourists who enjoy the beautiful lakes, beaches,

Starting this fall, primary and middle school students in China will have at least one weekly course on labor

education, according to a new curriculum standard released by the Ministry of Education (MOE).

Labor  education ranges  from  household chores  to  on-campus labor  and  community volunteer  services,

generally  3  types according  to  the  new  standards:  the  first refers  to  everyday  chores,  including  cleaning,

organizing, cooking,  and using  and maintaining  home appliances  (家电 );  next is  productive labor,  including

agriculture, making traditional handicrafts (手工艺品  ), and applying new technologies such  as 3D printing; the

third type is service work, including volunteer work. The new curriculum also calls for a week of extra-curricular

and off-campus activities designed for labor education once every school year.

A recent  study showed  that primary  and middle  school  students in  China only  spend an  average of  12

minutes a day on chores, compared to 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France.

Many countries start  students’ labor education at a young  age. Finland begins to  develop students’ life skills in

primary school. Spinning, woodworking, cooking and other craftsmanship classes are offered. In Germany, pupils

have two labor classes per week. Electronics, office technology, sewing, housekeeping, and career guidance are all

taught there.

Adding labor education  was out of concern that  the country’s youngsters do too  little housework and look

down on  manual labor (体力劳动)    jobs. Due  to great academic  pressure, schools tend  to put their  academic

curricula on  the top, and  parents sometimes see  household chores as distractions.  But, according to  the MOE,

labor education must  be strengthened to help  students develop social values,  an interest in labor  and finally an

all-around development.
