Multitasking (多任务处理) refers to performing different activities at the same time, such as editing a document or replying to emails while participating in a teleconference. People think that they are capable of doing many things at once. However, the fact remains that they are merely switching from one job to the other.

Several types of research have been done to see how multitasking affects our brain. A study conducted to see if multitasking while driving was good or bad, concluded that performance is primarily reduced when there is a resource conflict.

According to studies, the only time you can multitask is when you’re doing two things and one of them doesn’t require your attention or mental energy, for example, jogging while listening to music. In many cases, multitasking has long-term, harmful effects on your health, well-being, and productivity.

Sometimes the tendency to multitask may take a toll on the relationship and the partner feels neglected. Imagine discussing something with your partner while he or she is constantly engaged on the mobile phone checking social media or email. How would that make you feel?

Researchers investigated if multitasking increases our productivity and effectiveness. The findings showed that multitasking made individuals less effective and productive which is contrary to what most multitaskers believe.

There is a cognitive (认知的) cost every time we go from one task to another, which reduces our produetivity. Multitasking implies you are constantly shifting your attention between multiple tasks -— it is no different from being distracted.

We’d like to believe that doing numerous activities at once is achievable, but it comes at the cost of lowering the quality and amount of attention paid to each task. As a result, you’re less productive and less efficient than someone who concentrates on one task at a time.

What’s more, we lose time and energy when we switch tasks. A study found that when switching between different tasks, the amount of time wasted depends on various factors, and it could range from seconds to hours.

    8. Why does the author mention jogging and listening to music?

    A. To show multitasking is harmful.

    B. To prove multitasking is difficult.

    C. To show multitasking is possible.

    D. To prove multitasking is rewarding.

    9. What does the underlined phrase “take a toll on” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A. Strengthen. B. Damage.

    C. End. D. Start.

    10. What do most multitaskers think of multitasking?

    A. It extends working hours.

    B. It improves work efficiency.

    C. It affects work performance.

    D. It does harm to mental health.

    11. Which is the most suitable title for the text?

    A. Is Multitasking a Good Thing?

    B. Can We Do Multitasking at All?

    C. How Do We Achieve Multitasking?

    D. Why Do People Like Multitasking?

    D

At the United Nations COP27 climate conference in Egypt, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres claimed that the world is on a “highway to climate hell with our foot still on the accelerator (油门)”. To keep temperature from rising 1. 5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels by 2100, we need to pull a stop on greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, we’d basically have to bring the runaway truck to a complete and immediate stop. Now is the time for us to pull back before it is too late.

The climate pledges (承诺) made by nations at last year’s COP26 conference felt like a positive step in the right direction, but there’s very little doubt that the average temperature rise on Earth will pass the 1. 5-degree mark in the coming decades. Can we limit this overshoot? And how might we do that?

A study, released Thursday in the scientific journal Nature Climate Change, tried to answer those questions by modeling 27 different emissions reduction pathways of varying ambition. It came to an unsurprising conclusion:Countries need to act by increasing the ambition of their climate pledges. And they need to act now.

The 1. 5-degree rise has long been seen as a critical mark in the fight against climate change. Since the signing of the Paris Agreement at COP21 seven years ago, scientists have studied how this level of warming above preindustrial temperatures would affect the Earth. The models they’ve built show we are likely to see more extreme weather events, in addition to glacial melt, sea level rise that threatens many low-lying Pacific nations and significant loss of biodiversity once temperatures push past an increase of 1.5 degrees.

Though the 1. 5-degree target is practically dead, the situation isn’t hopeless. Now more than ever, there’s reason to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by setting more ambitious goals. However, ambition alone is not enough. We also need action -— investing in renewables and technologies like carbon capture and rapidly transforming our energy systems.

    12. What did Antonio Guterres try to do in the first paragraph?

    A. Make a request. B. Issue a warning.

    C. Provide a solution. D. Offer a suggestion.

    13. What was the conclusion of the study released in Nature Climate Change?

    A. What’s done cannot be undone.

    B. Setting a goal is what matters.

    C. Action speaks louder than words.

    D. Failing to plan is planning to fail.

    14. What’s the purpose of the models the scientists have built?

    A. To show the consequences of rising temperatures.

    B. To predict the problems with extreme weather events.

    C. To find the solutions to controlling global warning.

    D. To tell the importance of protecting the environment.

    15. How does the author end the passage?

    A. By sharing confidence and inspiring.

    B. By expressing concern and criticizing.

    C. By voicing doubts and making complaints.

    D. By spreading hope and appealing for action.

It was Christmas Eve when my sister and I decided to open our presents before our mom got home from work.

She usually came home about an hour after we got home from school, which we thought was plenty of time to sneak a peek (偷看) at the gifts under the tree.

Since my sister was older, and that put her in charge, she opened the first gift while I was ordered to stand guard at the big picture window in our front room. I was to report any suspicious (可疑的) activity or persons, namely our mother.

Finally, when my sister’s curiosity was satisfied and she had finished wrapping her last present back up, we changed places.

My heart beat so fast that it felt like my chest was moving in and out. My sister reminded me to be careful so I wouldn’t tear the paper and to wrap the present back up the same way that I had found it.

After unwrapping a few presents, I found it faster to open one end of a present and peek inside. Cool! Mom and Dad got me headphones for my stereo! I pulled the headphones out of the box and was about to put them on when my sister shouted, “Quick! Wrap it hack up! Mom’s coming!”

My heart hit the floor along with the headphones. My body was as frozen as a snowman. I shoved the headphones back in the box but my hands were shaking so much that I tore the paper trying to wrap it back up. My sister was yelling at me, which only made my hands shake more. I heard the door opened. I thought I was going to wet my pants!

I had just finished burying the package with my headphones in it when my mother came into the front room. I jumped up and said, “Hi, Mom!” She smiled at me and said “Hi,” back, but didn’t appear to suspect a thing. My heart began to slow as I took a deep breath. That was close. Too close!

All the students are welcome to attend it. You are supposed to arrive on time, listen carefully and respect the lecturer. Mobile phones, snacks and drinks are not allowed and don’t make any noise. Please feel free to put your hands up and ask the professor if you have any questions.

    第二节(满分25)

    47题答案】

    【答案】One possible version:

On Christmas morning, my sister and I gave award-winning performances when we opened our presents—again. “Headphones!” I shouted excitedly. “Thanks, it’s just what I wanted.” After everything had been opened, my sister and I looked at each other, and our eyes met. Our secret was safe. After a moment, when both of us were quiet, Mum said smilingly, looking into our eyes, “Honey, seeing you happy with the presents makes me happy. Anyhow, I’ve sensed that you show no sign of surprise, since you’ve looked into the presents beforehand.”

Looking at each other, my sister and I laughed—Mum had actually found out our secret. Gathering up enough courage, we went up to her, murmuring “I’m sorry, Mum.” But before we could go on, Mum interrupted us and said, “This is no time to say sorry. Go and enjoy yourselves.” I don’t remember how we spent that day happily with our Christmas gifts, but I remember one thing clearly. That is, we should learn to be honest, even if we’ve done something wrong or improper.
