Lu Xun is one of the greatest Chinese writers of the 20th century. Besides his famous stories, he also wrote many influential articles about the living conditions of Chinese people.
Born in 1881 to a wealthy family, Lu Xun had a happy childhood. In 1893, however, his grandfather, a senior government official, was put into prison for taking money. At the same time, his father became seriously ill. From that time on, his family was no longer accepted by their relatives and friends. These early experiences greatly influenced his writing.
By the time Lu Xun arrived in Nanjing to study at university in 1899, he already believed that Chinese society had to change and become modem. In 1902 he went to study in Japan. There, he began writing articles for several Chinese student magazines. He showed a gift for writing and translating and he even wrote several books, although none was popular. "You don't talk much. Grandpa," Lisa said.
"You don't visit much, Lisa." her grandfather replied.
They stood looking at each other. "Come with me, Lisa." said Grandpa. He started walking without looking back.
Lisa followed him to a large storehouse.

"You coming?" Grandpa's voice sounded muffled. His words were coming from inside the storehouse.
Lisa went inside. The storehouse was full of all kinds of things. She could see him in the far corner. Lisa walked over and stood next to him. He pointed to a small wooden box with "Lisa" painted on it in bright-green letters.
"Yours," he said.
Lisa bent down and opened it. In it were some old things—a bright blue feather, a tiny V-shape leaf and some dolls. She looked up at Grandpa, with tears in her eyes.
"The box stays here, but it belonged to you. No one else." Then he closed his eyes and smiled. His smile reminded Lisa of her father. Grandpa no longer seemed strange and silent.
"I may be so overcapitalized (资本过剩)," Lisa answered, carefully pronouncing the familiar word.
Grandpa laughed out loud. "How did that eight-year-old brain of yours find its way around a big word like 'overcapitalized'?"
"It's my dad's favourite word," Lisa replied,
Grandpa looked down at Lisa and smiled. His smile again reminded Lisa of her father. Without thinking, she reached up and took Grandpa's hand. Lisa's hand felt small and safe inside her grandfather's.

Whitcomb Judson was an inventor. He had a friend who had a sore back. Judson's friend couldn't bend over to tie his shoes. So Judson designed what he called a "clasp locker (扣环)" for him. It could be opened and closed with one hand. He patented (取得专利权)the idea in 1891. Even though he started his own company to make the clasp locker, Judson didn't make his invention famous.
The zipper as we know today is a result of the work of Gideon Sundback who worked as head engineer at Judson's company. Sundback improved on Judson's design. His design was stronger. faster and more reliable(可靠的) and Sundback patented it in 1917, calling it the "separable fastener (可分离扣)". With World War I breaking out, the army used his design on its clothing and equipment for the soldiers.
However, the invention didn't become popular with the public until 1923 when the B.F. Goodrich Company decided to use Sundback's invention on their new shoes. A leader at the company named them zippers after the noise they made, and the zipper got its name from then on. It also caught the attention of Fashion designers in France, who used zippers in men trousers.
The zipper not only makes it more convenient to fasten clothing. The invention of plastic zippers also helps in the fashion industry (行业). This small invention did change our life.
