Uniforms and equipment
For most people, clothes are to keep us warm and looking good. That’s not enough for athletes. Their uniforms and equipment (装备) are expected to help with their performances. For example, the uniforms for some Chinese athletes are made with graphene (石墨烯). According to the designers, this material can collect athletes’ body heat and keep them warm for as long as they wear it. Besides, the material is quick-drying. This means it helps wick away sweat.
Their shoes use the BOA lacing system (BOA自动系带系统). There is a button on the shoes. Press it and the shoes fit tighter. It’s especially helpful when wearing gloves.
Digital money
In cold temperatures, when people have to make payments, it’s quite troublesome for them to take out their phone and scan a QR code. Digital money devices can help solve this problem.
According to Bank of China, people can use a digital renminbi wallet. It is lighter than a coin and can be put into smartwatches, badges (徽章) and cards. While going shopping, people just need to put these wearable devices near a pay zone (区域) on vending machines (自动售货机) to complete payment. The digital wallets have already been tested in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou.
____________
For a perfect performance, athletes need to train hard. That’s why many wearable devices are designed to help athletes better prepare.
For example, the Beijing Institute of Technology designed a wearable device for skiing training. This device has 17 sensors (传感器), which are put on the skiers’ joints (关节) before they start training. A new study provides scientific evidence (证据) to support the idea that stress can cause a person’s hair to turn gray. A team from America’s Harvard University said the new study is the first to show a clear link between stress and graying hair. The findings were recently published (出版) in the journal Nature.
Ya-Chieh Hsu is a professor of Harvard University. She said that the research team was in search of the first scientific confirmation of the commonly held belief that stress can cause gray hair. “Everyone has an anecdote to share about how stress affects their body, particularly in their skin and hair — the only tissues we can see from the outside,” Hsu said.
The team used experiments with mice to look at how stress influences hair follicles (毛囊). Most people have about 100,000 hair follicles on their head. The follicles are responsible for making melanocytes, the cells (细胞) that give hair its color. As people age, their body produces fewer melanocyte . This causes a person’s hair to begin turning gray naturally.
Ya-Chieh Hsu said their research could lead to new treatments for stress-related graying in the future. Graying hair is just one example of how stress influences the body. New experiments could also be carried out in other areas as well, the team said. These could include studies to see whether stress can also cause changes in other parts of body.
Hsu said she would also like to study whether stress can influence the whole aging process. “We don’t know if that is true yet. We are interested in finding out the connection,” she said.

I once wrote a poem called Flying Kites, in which a man teaches his son to fly a kite. The child suddenly drops the string and lets the kite fly high up in the sky. With joy in his eyes, the child watches it climb until it disappears in the distance. Right then, the father realizes that someday he will have to loosen the string that ties him to his son, too. But he also wonders, “Will I release the string as unselfishly as that?”
Years later, my son, Frank, announced that he wouldn’t finish his college. I tried to talk him out of it. But none of my reasoning made any difference. At the end of the term, Frank moved back home.
Frank managed to find a job at a nursery, and enjoyed dealing with lots of children every day. I, however, was deeply disappointed. What was a college professor’s son doing at a job that any high school dropout could perform? Then I tried to persuade him.
“Look!” I said, “In a few years, you will be at your high school reunion with former classmates who became lawyers, doctors and engineers. Do you think you will be able to handle that?
“Yes, Dad!” he replied without hesitation. Then he fixed his eyes on mine and said, “But the real question is: Can you?”
Shame suddenly silenced me — I wasn’t thinking about my son while I was thinking about myself and what my friends would think. The problem wasn’t Frank’s pride. It was mine. All at once, I remembered my poem and the question — Will I release the string as unselfishly as that?”
At that moment, I knew I had to let go. Frank was old enough to make his own choices.
Today, Frank has a successful career. I am very proud of who he has become. Since I let go of my pride, I have been able to sit back and enjoy watching him fly high.

B. Frank expected to meet his high school classmates
C. it was the author who couldn’t put down his pride
