Jack thought himself a basketball fan. He watched quite a lot of American NBA basketball games. He not only watched them but also spent much of his free time playing on the court too.
Then came the final year of his middle school. All of his regular teammates stopped showing up on the court because they were simply too busy preparing for the high school entrance exam to play. He was, of course, under much stress himself, like everyone else. A good exam result meant a good high school; a mediocre(平庸的)score meant a mediocre school. Much was at stake. However, he loved basketball so much that he still found time to play, this time with a group of guys who were said to have skipped classes(逃课)before.
Some of his teachers started worrying about him. They asked his mother to go to school to let her know that Jack was hanging out with problem kids. When his mother returned home that day, she wanted to talk to Jack. Knowing the purpose of her visit to the school, Jack thought his mother would punish him for befriending those bad guys. To his surprise his mother was not angry with him at all. She wanted to hear her son's side of the story. So Jack told his mother about what he knew of Simon and Peter. Simon's parents were badly ill; Peter's father had lost his job. They both seemed to Jack to be normal kids. Jack's mother thought for a moment, then went on to say that she was OK with her son playing with them and that she and her son should think of ways to help these kids. Soon Jack's mum introduced some part-time jobs to Simon and Peter, which they accepted. She believed in her son and cared about those who were less lucky.
Jack's basketball friends and he have left for different places, but they still keep in touch. He knows Peter is now a manager of a local bank. Simon is currently a freshman at a university. Sadly, it is impossible to get together to play basketball again, but whenever they get on the phone, they talk about it all the time.

56. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Peter's family are living much better.

57. The main idea of the passage is to_______.
A. make friends with problem kids B. keep in touch with friends all the time
C. try to understand children and help problem kids
D. give up hobbies before the high school entrance exam

Water pollution happens when waste things from many areas are thrown into rivers, lakes and seas.
Agriculture (农业)
To increase(增加) the amount of food produced, farmers use large amounts of chemicals. The chemicals not used by the plants are washed by the rainwater into rivers, lakes and seas, which pollute both surface water and underground water.
Industry (工业)
Factories and industries often release poisonous chemicals into seas, rivers or lakes, which is quite bad for Mother Nature. An example of industrial sea pollution happened in Japan in the 1950s. A local factory had poured waste water, which had mercury (水银), into the Minamata Bay for 20 years. Tuna fish (金枪鱼) in the bay took in the mercury and people ate the tuna. Many children were born with birth deformities (畸形), people lost their hearing and sight, and thousands of people died in the end.
Sea transportation
When ships transporting oil get damaged(损坏) on the way, oil spillage (溢出) happens. One major disaster was the Exxon Valdez oil spill. An oil tanker (油舱) sank off Alaska in 1989 and leaked (泄漏) oil into the ocean. To save cost, some ships also poured unwanted oil from their engine rooms into the sea, thus polluting the oceans.
Home activities
If the waste from the washing of clothes and dishes are not treated and poured into the sea, they will do damage to the sea life. Some illness may also spread. Sometimes, rubbish is dumped into the sea.

Becky moved the book away tearing the picture page down the middle. She put the book back into the desk, and started crying.
After an hour, Mr. Dobbins unlocked his desk and took out his favorite book. Becky looked like a hunted and helpless rabbit. The next moment Mr. Dobbins faced the children. There was a long silence, then he shouted:
“Who tore this book?”Nobody answered. The teacher searched their faces.
“Benjamin, did you do it?”Benjamin said no. “Amy Lawrence?” A shake of the head.
Becky was the next.Tom looked at Becky and saw that she was almost crying because she was so scared. “Becky, did you tear--no, look at my face--did you tear this book?”Tom jumped to his feet and shouted:“I did!”
When he stepped forward for his punishment, he saw the surprise, the thanks and the love that came from Becky’s eyes. This was enough for one hundred beatings. That night, he fell asleep with Becky’s words in his ears: “You are so great.”
