Learning with Legos for more than 60 years, Lego bricks(砖块) have developed children’s imaginations. Now, a new form of these toys is called Lego Braille Bricks. It is being tested around the world.
Lego Braille Bricks are designed to help people learn Braille(盲文). That’s a system of writing in which letters are replaced by raised knobs(凸起). The small knobs on the bricks are put as Braille letters. Blind children can use their fingertips to read the knobs to learn Braille. According to the World Health Organization, 36 million people worldwide are blind. In the United States, only 10% of blind children learn Braille. Lego Braille Bricks can help change that.
Braille Bricks will be launched(上市)by Lego in 2020. For some schools, it will be free. The Danish Association of the Blind was one of the first organizations to come up with the idea of using Lego bricks to teach Braille. Thorkild Olesen, the president of the organization, is blind. He says many teachers don’t have the tools and skills to help kids learn Braille. So they teach with audio tools, such as audio books. “Like any other people, we need to express ourselves in writing,” Olesen told TIME for Kids. “Audio is great. But it can never replace Braille. Braille is the most important tool for us. It is the best way for blind people to learn to spell correctly, write, and read like common people.”
Olesen’s organization shared his idea for Braille Bricks with the Lego Foundation(基金会). Olesen explained to the toy maker that the knobs on Legos are similar to Braille letters. Stine Storm is a project manager at the Lego Foundation. She liked the idea of turning Lego bricks into a learning tool. “It was a fun and playful way to teach Braille to blind children,” she says, “Lego Braille Bricks will also have printed letters on them that match the Braille letters, so sighted children and blind children can play with the Legos together.”

When most people think of “beautiful”, they think of movie stars. I used to be one of them. But now my opinion of beauty has completely changed.
I was with my parents and little brothers at the McDonald’s (麦当劳). Since there are only tables with four chairs, I’m always the one to sit at a nearby table by myself. Usually, I’m a little unhappy, but not this time.
A woman was sitting at a table, two tables away. She was young and pretty, not the traditional beauty, but a warm one. She had thick dark-brown hair and wore common clothes, but none of those was why she was so beautiful to me.
Her children spread the ice-cream all over their clothes, and she just kissed them and that’s all. She didn’t get angry. The love and warmth this woman generated (产生) completely changed my view of beauty. She generated warmth like the sun, and her children were little planets around her.
She made a difference to her children’s lives. Instead of making them feel bad about themselves, she made them feel great about everything. That is true beauty: to make a positive difference to another’s live through warmth and caring.

Each of us has dreams for our future. What makes us study and make progress each day is closely connected with our dreams.
But why do you have dreams, you still end up with nothing? What separates (分离) successful people from the dreamers is their persistent (锲而不舍的) action. When you learn your lessons in school, you must work hard and not give up. You will often find some of your lessons very hard. Try and keep trying, and you’ll be sure to successfully deal with any difficulty you meet with. If we have a hard lesson today, let us try our best to learn it well and then we shall be prepared for a harder one tomorrow.
This is the famous formula (公式) for success:
Dream > Believe > Achieve
Most people have what they want (Dream) and think they can realize their dreams (Believe). And then they do nothing. They just imagine their dreams can come true. When they get tired, they will give up easily. They say angrily how terrible their life is.
I personally believe that if you really want to achieve your dreams in life, you have to add one thing to your success formula—Act.
For me, act is the most important thing for success and that’s to take Persistent Action (Act). If you say, “I can’t do it” and give up, you can never do anything valuable. However, “I’ll try” creates wonders. Let’s remember that there will be difficulties in our life. We must face them bravely and solve them. Success is not something that falls down from the sky. Most successful people made their dreams come true because of their persistent action.
Please remember: Action is the bridge that connects our dreams and goals to reality (现实).

Dear Ms. White,
I used to have a lot of problems and I always tried to fix them. I used to do badly in English. To fix it, I read English newspapers and went to the school English corner to improve it. Now I’ m quite good at it. I used to be weak. To fix it, I ate right and joined a sports club. I’ m strong and healthy now. I used to be afraid of speaking in public. To fix it, I took part in all kinds of school activities. Now I’ m outgoing and everyone likes making friends with me.
But now I have a problem that I can’ t fix. I have the ugliest nose in the whole world. It’ s not only fat but also big! I want to have a nose job(鼻子整形), but how can I get my parents to agree?
Yours
Ann

Dear Ann,
It sounds like you’ re a really proactive (积极主动的) person, always fixing problems. That’ s good, but when it comes to things like your nose, you have to stop. It sounds to me that you’ re looking for things that are wrong with your body. That’ s very dangerous. Also, I’ d like to point out that nobody is perfect. A nose doesn’ t reflect ( 反应 ) who you are, so there’ s no need for you to feel bad about yourself at all.
In my opinion, as a student, the most important thing for you is your schoolwork, not your looks.
Best wishes

(2021·北京二十中九年级月考)Imagine getting the chance to go camping for five days. It would be an adventure in the wild. You could row on a lake every day and leave your smartphone at home. Would you want to try this?
In June, four teenage girls from Minnesota, US, went camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area wilderness(边界水域泛舟区). They had a great time — even without their smartphones. Julia Ruelle, 16, put the group together. Earlier this year, she won an essay contest sponsored(赞助) by a company. The award was a five-day canoe and camping adventure with up to three friends. No parents or guides would be there. This award was supposed to encourage kids to be less dependent on technology.
Ruelle had been to the area before, but she had always gone with her parents. Sharing the experience with friends would be very different. She invited three friends: Anna Wander, Madeline Wilson, and Julianna Torelli.
They came up with a daily plan. “We would wake up early every day. We were done paddling(划桨) by noon. We ate lunch at the campsite. Then it was time for hammocks(吊床), reading, writing, making friendship bracelets(手链), talking and napping,” Ruelle said.
“I’m a lot less worried about things,” Wander said when asked how she felt without her cellphone. Her favorite thing to do was lying in her hammock and looking at the lake. Torelli enjoyed cooking. She made blueberry pancakes and sandwiches.
No one felt hungry or homesick. “Mental(心理的) health can be improved so much. It really helps to get away from your smartphones and reconnect with yourself,” Ruelle said.

Su Shi isn’t a strange name to us, as we learn his ci in textbooks. This year marks the 920th anniversary(周年) of his death.
Su is one of the most popular ancient writers. He was good at almost all kinds of writings and art, including poems, ci and prose(散文) as well as calligraphy and painting. But Su was not only respected for his talent, but also for his optimistic(乐观的) attitude toward life.
When he was young, he passed the imperial exams(科举考试) and earned the degree of Jinshi(进士). After that, he became an official.
Sadly, Su was demoted (贬谪) to serve in remote(偏远) areas because of false accusations(诬陷). But he was not too discouraged.
First, he went to Huangzhou, in today’s Hubei. There, he tried to enjoy life in the countryside. He farmed a piece of land which he called “Dongpo”. This is why people call him “Dongpo”. It’s said that he also invented Dongpo Pork, a famous Chinese dish, during this period. Many of his best poems were written there, too, including Tune: Calming the Waves (《定风波》). Its line “ Impervious to wind, rain or shine, I’ll have my will(归去!也无风雨也无晴)” showed his open-minded attitude.
Su was also demoted to Danzhou, in today’s Hainan. In the beginning, he couldn’t get used to the hot,wet weather. He also couldn’t understand the local language. Instead of getting sad, he set up schools and got along well with the locals. Many people traveled from afar to visit him.

Who invented the umbrella? There are many different opinions. Some people say that the people of ancient Egypt invented it, some say the Romans invented it and some say Luban’s wife invented it in ancient China. There’s even an interesting story about its invention in China.
Luban was the most famous craftsman (工匠) in ancient China. One day, Luban and his wife were taking a walk and enjoying the beautiful view. Suddenly it began to rain. Both of them were wet when they got back home. Luban’s wife said. “If there is something that can protect people from the rain when they are walking outdoors, it will be wonderful.” Then Luban said, “That’s easy. If you visit some villages in the English countryside, you might be lucky to see Morris dancing. People are not sure how old this kind of dancing is. Some think it started 2,000 years ago, but most agree that Morris dancing is probably about five centuries old.
Many agree that it celebrates traditional English farm life on holidays. Morris dancers wear traditional clothes. Usually this is a white shirt, a bright jacket, a hat and small bells called “jingle bells”. There are different styles of Morris dancing from different places around England.
In Cotswold Morris, the dancers usually carry white handkerchiefs(手绢)and sticks, which they hit as they dance. Each dance has six men dancers in Cotswold style, with a musician who plays a pipe(管乐器)or a violin.
Morris dancing styles from the north of England often use swords(剑) instead of sticks and dancers can look a little like soldiers, which is different from southern styles. It is common in this style for men and women to dance together. Border Morris comes from the west of England, near the border with Wales. Dancers in this style usually wear normal clothes with pieces of colorful paper, and sometimes they put black paint on their faces.
Morris dancing is an old English tradition but it's facing a big crisis(危机).As the years go by, fewer and fewer young people join Morris dancing groups. To pass down the tradition, the government calls for more young people to do something to change the situation.

Breakfast is commonly regarded as “the most important meal of the day.” But that rises the question of whether or not this sentence is true or just a myth. About 25% of Americans skip this meal every day and it has even become a trend to do so.
So what happens to your body if you don’t have breakfast day?
You may put on weight.
Although the idea that skipping breakfast every day can lead to weight loss, it’s not totally right. Some research has shown that keeping hungry in the morning can cause fatness, not just in children and younger population, but also among the adults.
This may happen because skipping breakfast can make people eat more later on. But one study also showed that skipping breakfast can put on weight even if you don’t overeat for the rest of the day because the body’s inner gets disturbed.
Your mood gets worse.
Skipping breakfast is related with mood disorder among adults. People who don’t eat in the morning are easy to have sadness more often. Also, skipping the first meal of the day 4 or 5 times a week can lead to increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes (糖尿病) by 55%. It can also be connected to low blood sugar levels. When one’s blood sugar level goes down, it results in fast mood changes, like being unhappy and getting angry easily.
You feel tired between 12 p. m. and 4 p.m.
In the morning, after a long break without food, your glycogen stores(糖类储备)are low and you need more energy to work well. Once you have breakfast, your body starts to break down fatty acids(脂肪酸)to produce the energy it needs. If you don’t have breakfast, even if you feel good in the morning, you may feel very tired in a few hours.

Now, many young people enjoy traveling around the world on their own. It’s not because they have no one to travel with, but because they think traveling alone is exciting and challenging. With no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if you lose your wallet, it is a big challenge. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character-building and a chance to prove that you can make it on your own. It’s exciting and special to travel alone. But it’s also dangerous to travel alone sometimes. So here is some advice for traveling alone.
Don’t choose a hotel if you’re not sure whether it’s safe. If you do, ask for a room near the elevator(电梯),so you won’t need to walk down long in the hallway(走廊). Besides, make sure the clerk writes down your room number.
Don’t arrive at night. Sometimes, areas around bus or train stations can be scary(使人惊慌的) at night, and some small towns may shut down early.
Keep your documents safe. Put your passport, extra money and other important documents in safe places, and use a bag or wallet to carry daily spending money.
Know some common sense. It is very important for staying safe and having an enjoyable time while you are traveling lone. For example, don’t walk around late at night, don’t drink with strangers and don’t take a free car for saving money.

"Parents can get a report of the time their children are spending on apps, how often each hour they are picking up their phones and what is interesting them, " Apple’s Craig Federighi said. "With the help of this app, parents can make decisions about how much time they want their children to spend on phones each day. "
"The company’s new Screen Time tool was badly needed. Apple and all the other big tech companies surely have a social responsibility(责任)to help parents decide on the right smartphone use, " Dr. Joanne Orlando, a researcher in Western Sydney University, said.

(2021·吉林省第二实验学校九年级月考)One day, a young man was cleaning out his dead grandfather’s belongings(财务) and he found a bright red envelope. Written on the front were the words, “To my grandson”. Knowing his grandfather’s handwriting, the boy opened the envelope. A letter inside read:
Dear Ronny,
Years ago you came to me for help. You said, “Grandpa, how is it that you’ve done so much in your life? You’re still full of energy, and I’m already tired of hard work. How can I get that same energy that you’ve got?”
I didn’t know what to say to you then. But knowing my days are numbered, I think that I should give you an answer. So here is what I believe.
First, when you meet up with challenges, welcome them. They’ll make you wiser and stronger than you were the day before. When you make a mistake, be thankful for the things it taught you. Use that lesson to help you reach your aims.
Sometimes have to be brave enough to move from the familiar to the unfamiliar. Life isn’t just reaching the top. Part of it is moving from one top to the next. If you rest too long, you might give up. Leave the past in the past. Climb the next mountain and enjoy the view.
Most important of all, never give up yourself. The person that ends up as a winner is the one who decides to win. Give life everything you’ve got, and life will give its best back to you.

Do you want to know how straight-A students from famous universities learn? Benjamin McEvoy, who studied at University of Oxford, shared his learning methods on US question-and-answer website Quora, which has been “liked” more than 447,000 times. His tips may help you to learn better.
Go to your lectures
For the first two years of Oxford, I went to maybe four lectures out of hundreds. I was arrogant, foolish and lazy. In my third year, I went to almost every single lecture available.
But my mind changed when I actually went to lectures. First, lectures are fun! I found so many gems that influenced my thinking. Many passionate speakers got me excited about the topic. Second, they are so helpful that I have remembered more stuff! An hour in the lecture hall has huge returns on investment (投入).
Be an active student
For my first year at Oxford, I hardly said anything in tutorials (辅导课) and I didn’t volunteer in discussions. So my understandings of different texts never matured (成熟) or became complex.
Then, somewhere in the middle of my second year, I got over myself and offered more of my own opinions. I responded to others, asked thoughtful questions and interacted (互动) way more.
Study in small chunks
When you structure your studying, the most important task is to ensure you are remembering the information you have already learned.
In order to improve your retention (记忆力) and take in more information, you need to break your studying up into manageable blocks (not studying new information for hours on end) and review what you’ve previously learned in each new block.

Li Bai was not a very hard-working student when he was young. He often skipped school. One day when he was walking by the river, he saw an old woman. She was working on a large piece of iron. He asked, “What are you doing?” She said, “I’m making a needle.” “But how can you make a large piece of iron into a needle?” She replied, “I must work hard every day.” Li Bai suddenly understood the importance of hard work, and he started to work hard at school.
Li Bai loved nature, especially big mountains and rivers. He traveled to lots of beautiful mountains and wrote lots of poems about them. He also wrote a lot about the moon. These poems are loved by many Chinese people. For example, Thoughts on a Tranquil Night(静夜思).
