I once met a young woman who had dreams of swimming for the U.S Olympic team. She had to get up every morning at 4 a.m. to swim for 3 hours before going to school. She did not party with her friends on Saturday night. She had to study and keep her grades up, just like everyone else.
When I asked her what compelled her with such super-human ambition and sacrifice (牺牲). She simply said, “I do it for myself and the people I love. It’s love that gets me over the hurdles and sacrifices.”
A reason or a purpose is a combination of “wants” and “don’t wants”. When people ask me what my reason for wanting to be rich is, it is a combination of deep emotional “wants” and “don’t wants”.
I will list a few. First the “don’t wants”, for they create the “wants”. I don’t want to work all my life. I don’t want what my parents aspired for, which was job security and a big house. I don’t like being an employee. I hated it that my dad always missed my football games because he was so busy working on his career. I hated it when my dad worked hard all his life and the government took most of what he worked for at his death.
Now the “wants”. I want to be free to travel the world and live in the lifestyle I love. I want to be young when I do this. I want control over my time and my life. I want money to work for me.
Those are my deep-seated, emotional reasons. What are yours? If they are not strong enough, the reality of the road ahead may be greater than your reasons. I have lost money and been set back many times, but it was the deep emotional reasons that kept me standing up and going forward. I wanted to be free by age 40, but it took me until I was 47 with many learning experiences along the way.
I wish I could say it was easy. It wasn’t, but it wasn’t hard either. But without a strong reason or purpose anything in life is hard.
4.The passage is started by __________.
A.giving an example B.explaining the causes
C.pointing out similarities D.describing the differences
5.The underlined word “compelled” in Para. 2 probably means __________.
A.committed B.inspired C.forced D.combined
6.We know from the passage that _________.
A.the “wants” lead to the “don’t wants”
B.the “wants” come from the “don’t wants”
C.the “don’t wants” have little to do with the “wants”
D.the “don’t wants” are more important than the “wants”
7.What can we learn from the underlined sentence in Para. 6?
A.The reality is greater than the deep emotional reasons.
B.With stronger emotional reasons, life must be much easier.
C.With deeper emotional reasons, the road ahead is likely to be harder.
D.In reality, we may meet many more obstacles without deeper emotional reasons.
C
The United States has about 475,000 school buses ---all painted yellow. Each day they carry more than 25,000,000 children, half of all schoolchildren in the country. But these buses, on average, use four liters of diesel (柴油) fuel to travel less than sixteen kilometers. When the school year began last fall, diesel averaged 55 cents a liter nationally. The price nearly doubled, to a dollar and 8 cents, by the end of school in June.
Bob Riley speaks for the American School Bus Council. He says fuel prices for schools are not much lower than others have to pay. As a result, schools are looking for ways to reduce transportation costs. Bus routes are being redrawn or, in some cases, canceled. Some areas are buying buses that use natural gas or other alternative fuels. Other steps include fewer field trips and less travel by sports teams. And some school districts may end any bus service not required by law.
Studies show that school buses are the safest form of transportation to and from school. The American School Bus Council says cuts in bus service are bad for children and possibly the environment. It says removing buses from the road will mean an increase in other vehicles transporting students. Spokesman Bob Riley says another concern is that reducing bus services might reduce attendance.
But it could also get more children to walk or bicycle to school. And that would surely make people happy at the National Center for Safe Routes to School. More kids walking or biking safely to school is the aim of a three-year-old federal program, part of an international movement. The goal is to increase physical activity and reduce air pollution. The United States will celebrate Walk to School Day on October eighth this year. But for some students, high fuel prices could make every day a walk-to-school day.
8.What does this passage mainly tell us?
A.High fuel prices’ influences on school buses.
B.New measures to transport school students.
C.The safest form of student transportation.
D.The origin of Walk to School Day.
9.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.Cuts in bus service will have negative results.
B.The US government is encouraging cuts in bus services.
C.The US schools are searching for the safest transportation means.
D.Reducing bus service will do a lot of good to the environment.
10.In order to cut down transportation cost, many schools take the following measures EXCEPT__.
A.changing some bus routes
B.stopping some bus routes
C.asking parents to drive children to and from school
D.using other types of fuels
11.The National Center for Safe Routes to School encourages more children to walk or bike to school in order to ____.
A.save more fuels and diesel for the country
B.keep the children safe on their way to school
C.make the children live a simple life
D.keep the children healthy and the environment clean
D
Every year, companies like GoPro manage to pack more and more functions into smaller and smaller action cameras that are less noticeable to wear. But a team of researchers from the University of Washington have managed to build a live-streaming wireless camera that’s so small that even an insect can wear it. It’s not quite small and light enough to be held to a fly, but at around 250 milligrams, the camera was successfully carried by a beetle.
Although the camera inside a modern smartphone is certainly tiny, it’s too large and heavy for an insect to carry once the batteries are added. Capturing millions of pixels(像素)with every shot requires a lot of image processing, which in turn requires a lot of power. Taking an alternate route, the researchers copied nature’s approach to how flies see the world. Their large compound eyes can not only detect motion across a wide field of view(it’s why they’re so difficult to hit)but also feature a small, high-resolution(分辨率)region that can focus on their targets, which helps reduce the load on their tiny brains.
Given its size and low-power approach, the camera’s streaming abilities are similarly limited, with a Bluetooth connection that maxes out at a distance of roughly 120 meters, requiring a remote operator to be fairly close to the camera at all times. However, battery life is surprisingly decent. The camera can run for up to two hours, but to extend that, the researchers included an accelerometer so that it’s only capturing and broadcasting images whenever the beetle is moving That can increase the camera’s battery life to over six hours.
The researchers acknowledge that their design certainly raises some privacy concerns, given how easy it is for insects to find their way into your home. But the camera could provide entomologists(昆虫学者)with new insights into how insects cross their environment, respond to threats in the wild, and even provide a closer look at their social structures.
12.What is the feature of the new camera?
A.It’s small-size and low-weight. B.It takes much clearer pictures.
C.It can perform tasks in the open air. D.It protects beetles from their enemies.
13.What do the researchers learn from flies for the new camera?
A.How to enlarge its vision.
B.How to capture the target.
C.How to save power of its battery.
D.How to make sharp turns during flying.
14.What can best replace the underlined word “decent” in Paragraph 3?
A.casual B.adequate C.beneficial D.unsatisfactory
15.What’s the author’s attitude to the design of the new camera?
A.Critical. B.Doubtful. C.Favorable. D.Objective.

As a little boy, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather’s farm in western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of winding stonewalls, the house and barn provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me. I was used to the city’s bright and neat living rooms which always seemed to whisper, “Not to be touched!”
I can still remember one afternoon when I was eight years old. Since my first visit to the farm, I’d wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stonewalls surrounding the property. My parents would never approve. The walls were old: some stones were missing, others loose and crumbling (倒塌). Still, my desire to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally, one spring afternoon, I picked up all my courage and entered the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.
“I, uh, I want to climb the stonewalls,” I said hesitantly. Everyone looked up. “Can I climb the stonewalls?” Instantly a sound went up from the women in the room. “Oh, no!” they cried in shock. “Fred, you’ll hurt yourself!” I wasn’t too disappointed; the response was just as I’d expected. But before I could leave the room, I was stopped by my grandfather’s booming voice. “Now hold on just a minute,” I heard him say, “Let the boy climb the stone-walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.”

47.参考答案
“Scoot (快走),” he said to me with a wink (眨眨眼), “and come and see me when you get back.” For the next two and a half hours I climbed those old walls and had the time of my life. Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventure. I’ll never forget what he said. “Fred,” he said, grinning, “you made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always remember, there’s only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are.”
Many years have passed since then, and I am now a host of a well-known television program. I host the television program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: my message to children at the end of almost every visit, “There’s only one person in this whole world like you, the kids can count on hearing me say,” and people can like you exactly as you are.
