A couple carved out a life on a small rock island among the seabirds. The Bass Rock is a small volcanic island just off the east coast of Scotland. Remarkable in the Scottish imagination for its landform and location in the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh, the island has had a thin and intermittent(断断续续)human population across the centuries. Its most notable and sustained inhabitants are the northern gannets that have lived on the island throughout recorded history. With a population of roughly 150,000 birds, their home is the largest in the world.
The English naturalist June Nelson is one of the few people who have lived on the Bass Rock. For three years in the early 1960s. she and her late husband, the ornithologist Bryan Nelson. who was researching gannets at the University of Oxford, made the island their temporary home. Living and working out of a small church, they devoted themselves to observing and recording the behaviors and ecology of the birds. The then-newly-married had little contact with the outside world, but led a happy life together.
In the short documentary Life on the Rocks, Nelson revisits her full and focused years on the Bass Rock. Combining cinematic black-and-white shots of the island with music. the UK director George Pretty creates a vivid account of Nelson’s unforgettable time there, as well as her emotional return. Mining Nelson’s memories and old photographs, the film explores how the husband-and-wife team found happiness on this unique patch of Earth, and among its many birds. But, more than just a fondness for the past, Nelson communicates an urgency to protect the plummeting(暴跌)global sea-bird population, which has declined by 70% in her lifetime, asking “What right have we to deprive(剥夺)future generations of this wonderful place?”
4. What do we know about the Bass Rock from Paragraph 1?
A. It is owned by a couple. B. It is heavily populated.
C. It is gannets’ largest habitat. D. It is famous for its scenery.
5. Why did June Nelson live on the island?
A. To research birds. B. To make their home.
C. To live a happy life. D. To stay away from the outside.
6. What does Life on the Rocks intend to tell us?
A. Nelson’s research about the birds. B. The couple’s fondness for the past.
C. Nelson’s description of the island. D. Nelson’s concerns about the birds’ situation.
7. Which best describes the couple’s life on the island?
A. Tough but worthwhile. B. Dangerous but admirable.
C. Smooth and fruitful. D. Inspiring and lucky.

If you ask most people whether they like having more choices, the answer will be yes. But when it comes to sales, a large selection can actually hurt the sellers’ income.
Although people like choice, they become overwhelmed (不知所措) by it. Hick’s Law perfectly proves this. It states that there is a measurable increase in how long it takes somebody to make a decision as the number of options that are available goes up.
That delay in decision-making can prove damaging on an online shopping site because it tends to result in users giving up. They are paralyzed by the decision, and so, they decide to go away and think about it. That will significantly reduce the number of people who eventually make a purchase.
I know it can be hard to convince sellers to limit the variety of products or complex options they offer on their sites, but there is some strong evidence to support your cause. Researchers in California ran an experiment in a local grocery store. They set up a stall (货摊) in the store selling jam. Some days the stall would sell six flavors of jams, while on other days it offered 24 varieties. The results were significant. On days when they sold 24 varieties, they saw a mere four percent sales rate. However, when they offered only six choices, that figure rose to a surprising 31 percent. Limiting choice works.
That experiment perfectly shows both the problem and the solution. Despite the evidence, you will not always be able to persuade sellers to reduce choice. The next best option is to hide some of those choices.
Unlike a stall in a grocery store, we have more flexibility online regarding how products are displayed. We can highlight some options and hide others. For example, you could display the best-selling categories of products, while hiding other groupings under something like a “more” option. If you are unable to remove options, you can at least focus clients on the most popular choices.
8. What does Hick’s Law mainly tell us about more choices?
A. They increase product sales. B. They lead to better decisions.
C. They can better satisfy customers. D. They make decision-making harder.
9. What does the underlined word “paralyzed” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Attracted. B. Prevented. C. Controlled. D. Encourage
10. What do we learn from the experiment in the grocery store?
A. More varieties produce more profits. B. Fewer varieties attract more customers.
C. More varieties reduce running costs. D. Fewer varieties create higher sales rate.
11. What does the author advise in the last paragraph?
A. Improving product quality. B. Increasing product varieties.
C. Avoiding displaying all options. D. Hiding the best-selling products.
D
As travelers eagerly return to the sky after years of staying closer to home during COVID-19, they’re facing flight delays, cancellations and long lines at airports around the world, mainly because of staff shortages. Now, one American airline is hoping technology will help deal with the mess. Alaska Airlines will begin allowing customers to attach electronic tags to their suitcases in hopes of speeding up the airport check-in process and freeing up workers’ time for other tasks.
With the new tags, travelers won’t have to wait in line to print baggage tags at the airport. Instead, they’ll be able to attach the tag to their baggage at home, and then activate it up to 24 hours before going away through the airline’s mobile app. They need to touch the phone to the tag. Once activated, the tag uses e-paper technology to display the guest’s flight information and a bar code on its small screen. The bag’s owner will then be able to leave it at a marked self-drop location at the airport. The equipment does not contain batteries and gets a small amount of energy from the phone used to activate it.
Alaska Airlines expects the electronic tags to cut the time travelers spend dropping off their checked bags by 40 percent. “With the new device, the entire check-in process should only take a few minutes. The electronic tags should also help shorten lines at the airport,” Charu Jain, an Alaska Airlines’ manager, says.
Alaska Airlines will firstly provide free tags for about 2,500 frequent fliers, and then the company will make the tags available to all of its loyalty program members in early 2023. The airline does not share the price of the tags; however, they’re listed as starting at around $72 on Bag tag’s website. Alaska Airlines’ workers have put the tags to the test. They stood up well to wear and tear, and airline officials say they could last a lifetime.
12. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The situation of American airlines.
B. The check-in process at American airports.
C. The influence of COVID-19 on Alaska airlines.
D. New tags to help solve problems at Alaska airlines.
13. How does Charu Jain feel about the electronic tags?
A. They can keep suitcases safer. B. They can save time and effort.
C. They can reduce flight delays. D. They can give detailed information.
14. Who can first get the electronic tags for free?
A. Alaska Airlines’ frequent fliers. B. Loyal program members.
C. The workers of Alaska Airlines. D. Alaska Airlines’ mobile app users.
15. Where does this text probably come from?
A. A science fiction. B. A tourist book.
C. An advertisement. D. A science magazine.

One night, after reading one of the hundreds of parenting books I’ve read, I was feeling a little guilty because the book had described some parenting strategies I hadn’t used in a while. The main strategy was to talk with your child and use those three magic words: ”I love you.“ It had stressed over and over that children need to know that unconditionally you really love them.
I went upstairs to my son’s bedroom and knocked on the door. As l knocked, all I could hear were his drums. I knew he was there but he wasn’t answering. So I opened the door and, sure enough, there he was sitting with his earphones on, listening to a tape and playing his drums. After I leaned over to get his attention, I said to him, “Tim, have you got a second? ”
He said “Oh sure, Dad. I’m always good for one.” We then sat down and after about 15 minutes and a lot of small talk, I just looked at him and said, “Tim, I really love the way you play drums.”
He said, ”Oh, thanks, Dad, I appreciate it.“
I walked out of the door and said, ”See you later! "As I was walking downstairs, it occurred to me that I went up there with a certain message and had not delivered it. I felt it was really important to get back up there and have another chance to say those three magic words.

Firstly, we will invite the headmaster to deliver a speech about labor. Then we will work in the practice base, where we can get involved in various work, ranging from cooking and growing vegetables to picking peaches. I’m sure the activity will help us obtain a brand-new insight into the meaning of labor, thus encouraging us to better cherish the fruits of others’ labor.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】Again I climbed the stairs, knocked on the door and opened it. Entering the room, I said with a determined look, “Tim, I want to let you know exactly how I feel. I just wanted you to know I love you, and I don’t know why I hold back on something so important.” Hearing what I said, surprised and overwhelmed, he was frozen for a while. And then he walked slowly towards me, rubbing his hands nervously. As he whispered that he loved me too, we hugged together firmly with tears welling up in our eyes. I think what Tim taught me that night is that the only way you can understand the real meaning and purpose of love is to be willing to pay the price. You have to go out there and risk sharing it.
