Sharon Holland and her husband, Jer, are travelling around the world and saving money at the same time-by swapping(交换) houses with strangers to keep the bills low. They only have to pay for their flights, meaning they save hundreds of pounds on their holidays each year.
The couple’s occupation allows them to enjoy long periods of school holidays. Both work as school Deputy Principals, which allows them to take their children, Cian, 23, Miah, 13, and Faye, 11, abroad up to four times per year. On average, they pay £1,250 per year for flights.
Sharon, from Cork, Ireland, has exchanged her home with a stranger 40 times in the last 13 years and says she’s never looked back. She said: “I couldn’t imagine travelling any other way now. Swapping our Irish Georgian farmhouse for another house abroad is amazing. There are home-style houses, modern city apartments and beautiful architectural period houses too. Every holiday is different and staying in someone else’s house makes our experience more rewarding and enjoyable. We are able to meet more locals and understand the culture more than we would if we were to stay at a hotel. We bring our laptops during the summer weeks as we are both responsible for timetabling and school planning but this can be done at a distance”.
Sharon has visited various cities in America, France, Cermany, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, the UK and their home country of Ireland. “But our favourite place is Italy. We have been lucky enough to visit there six times. Over the years, every experience has been great—from taking in the architecture to the food. We have made some wonderful happy memories for less”, adds she.
25. Why do the couple travel by swapping houses with strangers?
A. To avoid taking flights.
B. To spread local culture.
C. To improve their living condition.
D. To cut down their travel costs.

27. What does Sharon think of swapping houses with strangers?
A. Awkward. B. Fantastic. C. Dangerous. D. Traditional.
28. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To share a couple’s special way of travelling.
B. To advise more people to travel worldwide.
C. To introduce ways of exchanging houses.
D. To teach us how to save money while traveling.

High school students perform better on tests if they are in a classroom with a view of a green space, instead of a windowless room or a room with a view of built-up space, according to research from the University of Illinois Department of Landscape Architecture.
“It is the first to show a relationship between studying with a green view and students’ performance, said William Sullivan head of the research team. It’s a significant finding that if you have a green view outside your window, you’ll do better on tests.” Sullivan hopes the results of their research will lead to policy changes. Changes in school design, for example “would be a much better thing than any of the things we spend money on in secondary education today,” Sullivan said.
The research included 94 students at five central Illinois high schools. Students were randomly assigned(随机分配) to one of three kinds of classrooms-windowless, with a window looking out onto built-up space, or with a window looking out onto green space. Each kind of classroom had a similar size and layout. The students took part in one-on-one experiments in which they did 30 minutes of activities that included a proofreading exercise, a speech and a math exercise. Following the activities the students were given an attention test which asked them to repeat a series of(一连串) numbers.
The findings: Students did better on both study activities and the attention test if they were in a classroom with a green view, Sullivan said.
The researchers suggest their findings can help planners and policymakers improve students’ well-being and learning. For example planners can choose sites for new schools that already have trees and other vegetation, or they can plant many trees on the site; architects(建筑师) can design classroom, dining room and hallway windows so they look onto green spaces.
29. What did the study find out about high school students?
A. They like to have green plants in their classrooms.
B. They will get better grades when studying in different classrooms.
C. Changes in school design will influence their attitudes towards teachers.
D. A green view through a classroom window can improve their performance.
30. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How the study was carried out. B. Why the study was different.
C. The purpose of the study. D. The result of the study.
31. What do the researchers think of the study?
A. It has drawn public attention to education.
B. It has encouraged students to get close to nature.
C. It can play a guiding role in school planning.
D. It needs more support from high school teachers.
D
Biscayne is not very far from the lights, noise and excitement of downtown Miami. But it has a very different atmosphere from the big city. Biscayne National Park was established as a national monument in1968. It became a national park in 1980.That year, its size also increased. The park now covers more than70,000 hectares.
If you enjoy water, Biscayne is the park for you. Ninety-five percent of the park is water. Many kinds of animals live in these waters. Some of them are threatened or endangered. You will find the huge, gentle West Indian manatee(海牛), the less gentle American crocodile, several kinds of sea turtles, and more than 500 species of fish.
Scientists say human history at Biscayne begins more than 10,000 years ago. However, evidence of the area’s earliest people is mostly underwater now, as water levels have risen over time. Within the last 3,000years, people began to settle in the area. Scientists continue to learn about these people by examining the big hills of shells they left behind. The shells contain other waste, too, including early tools and housewares.
European explorers began arriving in the area in the early 1500s. They brought with them diseases like smallpox and measles(天花和麻疹). Over time, these diseases killed huge numbers of natives. Early explorers arrived in the area on ships. The reefs and rough waters made it difficult for ship captains. Biscayne’s waters contain more than 50 shipwrecks. Scuba divers today can explore six of them.
Four ecosystems come together here, which is what makes the park so diverse. The blending ecosystems create “edge communities”. These edge communities support a huge amount of wildlife.
The underwater diversity is what attracts most people to Biscayne National Park. Many visitors come here to scuba dive in Biscayne National Park in 1980.
32. What happened to Biscayne National Park in 1980?
A. It covered more than 70,000 hectares. B. It began to be set up as a national park.
C. It was built as a national monument. D. It became much larger in area.
33. By examining the shells they left behind, scientists can .
A. learn how the earliest people arrived B. learn about the sea animals
C. learn about the life of the earliest people D. know how old the place is
34. What does “edge communities” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to?
A. The place where the natives live.
B. The place where Europeans first arrived.
C. The place where people like to scuba dive.
D. The place where four ecosystems meet.
35. What attracts tourists most to Biscayne National Park?
A. Its ecosystems. B. Its long history.
C. Its endangered animals. D. Its underwater activities.

Being a teenager can be difficult with your hormones(荷尔蒙)going wild, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the teenage years. 36

Develop your sense of self, focusing more on your own thoughts and goals, instead of what other people think. Many worries are based on what other people think, rather than what you think. 38 It’s your life, so live it the way you want to.
School can be very hard work, but in your teenage years, it matters more than ever. What you achieve in your teenage years may determine in large part your chances in your adult life. Try your best to do well in school. 39 It may not seem enjoyable, but many teens—not only the top students—do find it enjoyable!
40 Your teenage years are ever-changing, and your interests will continually change. You will continue to grow and develop as a person as long as you’re alive. Nothing about yourself is set in stone, even at the end of your teenage years. There’s no need to decide what you are at your age. Even if you’ve decided on what you’re going to do, don’t be surprised if your plans change—you never know where life is going to take you.
A. Go ahead and do what you want to do. B. Avoid rushing to find out who you are. C. Improve your studying skills and even make it fun. D. Unluckily, it’s impossible to enjoy life as a teenager. E. 参考范文:
Dear Lisa,
I am sorry to hear that you are going through a hard time at the moment. The truth is that a number of students are under stress when entering senior high school, so there is no need for you to feel anxious. Here I’d like to offer you some useful suggestions.
First of all, try to put yourself into your parents’ shoes, then you will understand why they expect so much of you-maybe they wish you to have a bright future. Second, you could try communicating your feelings to your parents in a friendly way, which will help you reduce your stress. Last but not least, be confident about yourself, and everything will come out all right in the end.
I sincerely hope my suggestions will be of help to you, and you can free yourself from the stress soon.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
