Joshua Nelson, 18, from Missouri, is graduating from St. Charles West High School this week and will be attending Southeast Missouri State in the fall. He had saved up money to pay for his tuition, but when he received the college's President's Scholarship, he decided to take his savings and donate it to other students in need.

“It comes from my family education and faith," Nelson said. "I've always lived by strong principles as far as being a cheerful giver and having an open hand when it comes to giving back so I feel like that really motivated me.”

SEMO's President's Scholarship is the school’s most celebrated, and is only awarded to five top students annually. Nelson said he sat down and outlined how a scholarship could work to help future students who need financial assistance for college. Originally the plan was to give away $ 1,000 the one time, but then he met up with his counselor (顾问), Yolanda Curry, to work out a game plan.

“I wasn't expecting it at all!” Curry said. "He told me he had a great idea and wanted to share it with me. I could tell he was really excited.

Nelson, in association with his high school, set up the Joshua Nelson Leaders In Action Scholarship fund. Each year, $1,000 will be awarded to a senior. The money will come from donations, of which there have been $16,000 so far — for a total of $17,435 at last count, according to the school. With the money already in the fund, there's enough to give out a scholarship each year for over a decade. The first scholarship was awarded on June 1 to Darrell Montalvo-Luna. As the first recipient, his scholarship was $2,000.

“Joshua has the heart of a servant leader. He leads by example and he's genuinely excited when good things happen for other people," Curry said. "He's an encouragement — he's good at building others up and does what he can to help encourage and motivate those around.

4What did Nelson's initial donation come from?

    AHis scholarship. BHis savings.

    CHis pocket money. DHis wages.

5What does the underlined phrase "having an open hand" in paragraph 2 mean?

    AAmbitious. BCourageous.

    CGenerous. DCautious.

6How did Curry feel when hearing Nelson's idea?

    AShocked. BConfused.

    CExcited. DDelighted.

7What can be inferred about the Joshua Nelson Leaders In Action Scholarship fund?

AIt never supports high school students.

BIt was set up more than ten years ago.

CIt was founded by Nelson and Curry.

    DIt is going very smoothly.

    C

Now we are in a "golden age" of space-sample collection and exploration. Space agencies around the world are busy collecting, or planning to collect, samples from asteroids(小行星),moons and planets and so on.

China's Chang'e-5 mission is the most recent sample-return mission that has been successfully completed. On Dec 17, 2020, the Chang'e-5 lunar probe(探测器)returned home and landed in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region after weeks of space travel, China Daily reported. This was the world’s first lunar sample-return mission since 1976. The mission collected 1,713 grams of samples of rocks and dust with the help of a drill and a mechanical(机械的)arm.

Another space sample-return mission was completed on Dec 6, 2020. Japan's Hayabusa-2 probe returned a capsule to Earth containing valuable samples from the asteroid Ryugu. This was the second time asteroid samples had ever been collected and brought back to Earth. The first asteroid samples were collected by the original Hayabusa spacecraft back in 2010.

There will be more such missions in the near future. NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, which collected samples from the asteroid Bennu in October 2020, is expected to return to Earth in 2023. Russia's Lunar-25 mission is scheduled to launch to the moon in 2021 to collect lunar samples.

“I cannot emphasize enough how valuable return samples are for increasing our understanding of the origin and evolution of our solar system and our place in the universe, and how we came to be," said Ann Nguyen, a NASA planetary scientist

As for the Chang'e-5 lunar samples, scientists will conduct various analyses, tests and experiments to determine the composition, structure and physical characteristics of the samples. This information will help to deepen our knowledge about the history of the moon, as well as our solar system as a whole.

8What do we know about the Chang'e-5 lunar probe?

AIt was launched on Dec 17,2020.

BIt completed the most successful mission.

CIt collected the world's first lunar sample.

DIt brought back more than 1,700 grams of lunar samples.

9What does the author focus on in paragraphs 3 and 4?

    AProviding examples. BExplaining a concept.

    CDrawing comparisons. DMaking a summary.

10Why do we collect samples from space according to Ann Nguyen?

ATo learn more about how the solar system originates and evolves.

BTo determine the structure of the solar system.

CTo deepen our knowledge about our place on Earth.

DTo understand how water first appeared on the moon.

11Which can be a suitable title for the text?

AA "golden age" comes BMan explores space

CSpace samples land DScientists analyse samples

From Mozart to Metallica, tons of people enjoy listening to various types of music while they paint, write, or draw. Many believe that music helps to boost creativity, but an international study conducted by English and Swedish researchers is challenging that notion.Psychologists from Lancaster University, the University of Gavle, and the University of Central Lancashire say that their findings indicate music actually stops creativity.

To come to their conclusions, researchers made participants complete verbal(语言的) insight problems designed to inspire their creativity while in a quiet room and then again while music played in the background. They found that background music “damaged” the participants' ability to complete tasks associated with verbal creativity.

The research team also tested background noises such as those often heard in a library, but found that such noises had no impact on subjects' creativity. The tasks were simple word games. For example, participants were given three words, such as dress, dial, and flower. Then, they were asked to find a single word associated with all three that could be combined to form a common phrase or word. The single word, in this case, would be “sun” (sundress, sunflower, ete).Participants completed the tasks in either a quiet room, or while exposed to three different types of music: music with unfamiliar lyrics, instrumental music or music with familiar lyrics.

They found strong evidence of damaging performance when playing background music in comparison to quiet background conditions. Also, as far as the library background noises having seemingly no effect, the study's authors believe that was the case because library noises create a “steady state” environment that doesn't disrupt concentration.

It's worth mentioning that even familiar music with well-known lyrics would damage participants' creativity, regardless of whether or not it inspired a positive reaction, or whether participants typically studied or created while listening to music.

12What does the underlined word “notion” mean in the first paragraph?

    Aconcept Bmistake Cmethod Ddesign

13What effect does the background music have on the creativity of the participants?

AIt is bad for the creativity. BIt is good for the creativity.

CIt improves the creativity. DIt destroys the creativity.

14What background music has nothing to do with creativity?

AInstrumental music. BMusic with familiar lyrics.

CMusic with unfamiliar lyrics. DCommon noise in the library.

15What should we do in the future according to the study?

ANever listen to music. BListen to some strong music.

CDon't listen to music while studying. DOnly listen to Mozart while studying.

How to make sure of safe running

We all know that running is good for your health. It may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems. It also may help you live longer. ____16____ Here are five commonly shared ideas among fitness experts to reduce the risk of injury for people new to running or jogging.

    Take it easy

____17____ Most people get running injuries when they push themselves too hard. The body needs time to get used to increases in distance or speed. Muscles and joints need time to recover.

    Listen to your body

Most running injuries do not come out of the blue. ____18____ They may include body aches, sore muscles and pain that does not go away.

    Get good running shoes

____19____You should find the shoe that offers the best fit and support for your feet. More importantly, you should replace your shoes every 500 to 800 kilometers.

    Take good notes

Take some time after each run to write down notes about what you did and how you felt. Look for patterns, things that happen over and over again. For example, you may find that your knees ache when you run on consecutive(连续的) or back-to-back days. But perhaps you feel great when you rest in between running days. ____20____

    Cross train

As we said earlier, running is hard on your body. So physical fitness experts suggest some form of cross training to improve muscle balance and to help you stay injury free. They say swimming, cycling, and yoga are good exercises to combine with running. These exercises are easier on the body.

    AUsually, there are warning signs.

BHowever, running can be difficult on the body.

CDo not run too much, too soon or too fast.

DThere is no single best shoe for every runner.

EIt also does not matter how fast or even how often you run.

FThese notes will help you identify the best workout for you.

GAbout 1,200 of the deaths were linked to heart disease or a heart attack.

    1.你的职业规划;2.选择理由;3.你为此做的准备。

    注意:1.词数80左右;

    2.可适当增加细节,以使行文连贯。

    第二节(满分25 分)

47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 You love your smartphone. It keeps your email readily accessible, and it helps you to stay connected to friends near and far. It’s harmless, right?

Wrong. Smartphone addiction is a real concern, especially as people become increasingly dependent on gadgets to conduct daily activities. If you fear your devotion to your smartphone is bordering on addiction, here are eight signs. If you had some of them, it might be time to seek help:

    · You text people who are in the same room with you.

    · Your phone goes everywhere with you-even the bathroom.

    · You sleep with your phone.

    · You don’t know how to turn your phone off.

    · Your self-esteem is tied to how many notifications you get.

    · You panic if your phone is out of sight.

    · You’d rather be late than arrive without your phone.

    · You can’t stop peeking at the screen, even during a movie or your favourite TV show.

    What smartphone addiction looks like

Some of those signs may seem very silly, but they are real indicators that your dependence on your smartphone is reaching critical levels.

An addiction has no real danger unless they are disruptive to your life. But that doesn’t mean a strong attachment to your smartphone is completely harmless. Difficulty in concentrating, poor sleep, and increased anxiety-not to mention damage to interpersonal relationships and communication skills-have all been linked to smartphone overuse.

How to take your life back

It’s easy to shrug off smartphone addiction as a silly overreaction, but if you identify with two or more of the signs listed above, you may want to consider cutting back.

Here are some easy ways to use your smartphone properly:

    Set limits

Start by setting some guidelines to help you manage your usage.

    3. 续写部分分为三段,每段的开头语已为你写好;

    4. 续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。

    46Boys and girls,

I’m delighted to share my career plan, to be “ACEO, head of a company!”

As a monitor, I take much enjoyment from managing class business and bringing all together. This chance also allows me to see my potentials in management and leadership. Treating others honestly and sincerely has earned me their trust and faith, which leads to my firm belief in taking CEO as my future career.

To approach what I’m pursuing, I’m equipping myself with more knowledge and qualities required, like intellect and vision. I believe I can make it.

    Thank you. (100 words)

    47Set limits

Start by setting some guidelines to help you manage your usage. For example, you might make it a rule to wait one hour after waking up before reaching for your phone or keep it turned off during dinner or your favourite show.

    Watch your feelings

Notice how you feel when you reach for your phone. Identifying your emotional state gives you a clue as to why you’re going for the phone. Are you bored, anxious, stressed out, or lonesome? Once you start to understand the feelings that lead you to lean on your smartphone, you can seek other ways to find relief.

Find other comforts to replace smartphones

Smartphones have become the number one self-comfort out there. Identify other ways to provide comfort in situations where you tend to rely heavily on your phone. If you go to your phone when you feel bored or nervous, practise some mindfulness techniques that will help you tune in to your body and the world around you. This will help you to stay calm and connected to your surroundings, rather than using gadgets to disconnect and escape.
