Nicholas Alston，27， was barely a year into working as a flight attendant （服务人员）when the pandemic influenced the travel industry. By November 2020, due to budget cuts and decreased service, he had taken a voluntary leave of absence.

Alston once worked as a clerk in a food processing factory before becoming a flight attendant in 2019.So when the pandemic slowed his flying schedule, he took it as a sign to revisit his goal of opening a restaurant —a passion project of his since college.

In December 2020, he launched his very own restaurant business—Clutch Handheld Breakfast—a one-person operation that he ran from a so-called ghost kitchen or a cooking facility that produced food only for delivery and takeout with no dine-in areas.

In May 2021, Alston returned to flying full-time and kept a busy schedule: He would report to work at the Detroit Metro Airport on Fridays,fly around the country through Tuesday, return to Detroit and immediately go to Columbus to start service for his restaurant, which he operated on Thursday and Friday mornings. Alston intended to increase his flying hours to save money and move onto the next period of his business plan: Buying a food trailer.

He plans to gather customers' feedback in 2021.“I know it's going to take a little bit of time,”Alston says of his business plan. One third of adults over 65 in America have never used the Internet, and half don't even have Internet access at home.In San Francisco,"the center of tech", 40% of older adults do not have basic digital literacy（素养）skills.

This situation is becoming appalling as over 10,000 Americans turn 65 every single day. By 2050,22% of Americans will be 65 or older. Meanwhile, technology is developing very fast. This means that a large number of people will be unable to proficiently use emergent technology.

Many people believe that seniors aren't required to participate in our tech future because they'll be retired and relaxed soon. But this is the farthest thing from the truth. Baby boomers are currently experiencing a different boom: With more people getting older than ever before, their life expediencies（预期寿命）are also increasing dramatically； With medical advancements， the number of American people projected to live into their 90's has doubled since 1965.

However, they don't have strong financial or educational support. This is not a problem; it's a crisis. More than half of employees over 50 have been laid off in what's being called "forced retirement". And few organizations are actively helping older employees make the transition from full-time jobs to part-time ones. For those fortunate enough to be employed, 3 out of 5 older workers experience prejudice.

The easiest solution is to teach digital literacy. If baby boomers want to survive the forthcoming retirement crisis, they should get enough digital knowledge and skills to operate today's tools and tomorrow's platforms. With every crisis comes an opportunity. Tutoring, customer service, editing, research, book-keeping, and other virtual assistance-based work open the doors. But again, digital knowledge is first required to live in our high-tech society and gig economy. So try to get more online and navigate the growing number of sites and apps.

A large body of evidence shows that exercise strengthens our brains. In studies, active people generally have more gray matter. Gray matter is 1made up of the brain's essential, working neurons （神经元）. Fit people also tend to have healthier white matter， which supports and connects neurons. Partly as a consequence of these， exercise is strongly linked with lower risks of dementia（痴呆）and other memory problems with age.

But exercise may increase exposure to air pollution and previous studies have shown the opposite effects of air pollution on the brain. So, what happens them?

Some researchers looked at thousands of middle-aged adults from- the UK Bio-bank. The researchers characterized their physical activity patterns depending on the amount of physical activity collected from the devices researchers asked them to wear. They then evaluated air pollution levels where the people lived, asked the participants to complete brain scans, and finally, compared them. Researchers found that exercise was linked to excellent brain health for people in areas with little air pollution. But the beneficial associations almost disappeared for exercisers living in areas with even moderate（中度的） air pollution. They had less gray matter and more unhealthy white matter than people living and exercising away from pollution, even if their workouts were similar.

Extending these findings in a follow-up study,the same scientists found that the more people exercised, the less likely they were to develop dementia over time — provided their local air was clear. When it was moderately polluted, though, they had an increased long-term risk of dementia, whether they exercised or not.

These studies increase the urgency for developing more-effective regulations related to air quality. Public policy could be used to address people's exposure to air pollution during exercise.
