It was a Sunday night. I circled the neighbourhood a few times, looking for a place to park my car. Finally, I found one to the south of my house. It was behind a late-model Jeep. I tried to back into the space, but I failed to see the angles clearly. I heard it before I felt it, the sound of plastic on plastic, like a sheet of sandpaper along the surface of a painted piece of wood. I got out of my car to check the damage. My car was unharmed. However, there were two distinct lines on the Jeep.
Then I noticed a woman, walking her dog, who was now photographing me with her phone. “Hope you’re no planning to drive away,” she said quietly. Until then, I was annoyed with myself for having been careless, but now I was mad with her for taking my picture. How dare she, I thought. She had no respect for my privacy. And how dare she assume I would do the wrong thing? But soon I calmed down because I knew she wasn’t entirely incorrect. I’d made no decision to drive away without leaving ante but I’d be lying if I said the idea hadn’t flashed across my mind. It was dark, and aside from her no one was watching. It happens all the time - the hit-and-run in the parking lot.
We all have those desires to behave selfishly, to go against the social contract; it is not the thought but what we do with it that counts. It is the commitment to take responsibility, to care for one another, and to think about the greater good that makes this world a better place to stay. The choice to own up was left to me. I left a note with my name and phone number under the wiper blade(刮水片) of the Jeep.
24. What happened to the author on that Sunday night?
A. He knocked down someone. B. He got hurt in a car accident.
第4页共12页

A. She blocked his view on purpose.
B. She spoke to him in a very rude way.
C. She photographed him without permission.
D. She refused to take responsibility for her fault.
26. What does the underlined phrase “own up” in the last paragraph mean?
A. admit. B. occupy. C. disappear. D. refuse.
27. What does the author intend to tell us through his story?
A. Everyone makes mistakes. B. Always do the right thing.
C. Avoid conflicts with others. D. Apologizing sincerely matters.

In the last 50 years the media influence has grown increasingly with the advance of technology. First there was the telegraph, then the radio, the newspaper, the television and now the Internet.
We live in a society that depends on information and communication to keep moving in the right direction and do our daily activities like work, entertainment, health care, education, personal relationships, travelling and anything else that we have to do.
A common person in the city usually wakes up and then checks the TV news or newspapers, goes to work, makes a few phone calls, and makes his decisions based on the information that he has either from his co-workers, news, TV, friends, family, financial reports, etc.
In our daily life, we rely on the media to get the current news and facts about what is important and what we should be aware of. We have put our trust on the media as an authority to give us news, entertainment and education. However, the influence of mass media on our kids, teenagers and society is so big that we should know how it really works.
Of all the media distribution channels the most influential has been the television, we are constantly exposed to thousands of images of violence, advertising, celebrities and much more.
But who owns the media, which are the companies or people that shape our values, beliefs and decisions? In America, the media is basically dominated by some major companies. They own the major entertainment theme parks, entertainment movie
第5页共12页
studios, television and radio broadcast networks and programming, video news and sports entertainment. They also own integrated telecommunications, wireless phones, video games softwares, electronic media, music industry and more.
Years ago there was more diversity in companies, but they have merged so now they are just a few and they have the power to shape the opinions and beliefs of us and our kids. So it’s important to be aware of what your kids are exposed to every day and you should also try to look at things from different perspectives and not just from the one the media gives you.
28. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Mass media influence B. Influence of TV on the masses
C. The harm of media D. What mass media is
29. What does the underlined word “dominated” mean?
A. Replaced. B. Controlled. C. Overlooked. D. Sold.
30. In the author’s opinion, which media is the most influential?
A. Newspaper. B. Telegraph. C. Radio. D. TV.
31. What has happened since mass media companies merged?
A. We can look at things in various perspectives.
B. We know more about what our kids are exposed to.
C. They have more power to shape our opinions and beliefs.
D. A lot of money can be saved and spent on other projects.
D
As we age, even if we're healthy, the heart just isn't as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be. In most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s. And among people who don't exercise, the changes can start even sooner.
"Think of a rubber band. In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken," says Dr. Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That's what happens to the heart. Fortunately for those in midlife, Levine is finding that even if you haven't been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart.
Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy. Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a program of nonaerobic ( 无 氧 ) exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group
第6页共12页
did high-intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.
"We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30-or 35-year-old hearts," says Levine. "And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump (泵送) a lot more blood during exercise. But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn't change," he says.
"The sweet spot in life to start exercising, if you haven't already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility," Levine says. "We put healthy 70-year-olds through a yearlong exercise training program, and nothing happened to them at all."
Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine's findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference.
32. What does Levine want to explain by mentioning the rubber band?
A. The right way of exercising. B. The causes of a heart attack.
C. The difficulty of keeping fit. D. The aging process of the heart.
33. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design?
A. Diet plan. B. Professional background.
C. Exercise type. D. Previous physical condition.
34. What does Levine's research find?
A. Middle-aged hearts get younger with aerobic exercise.
B. High-intensity exercise is more suitable for the young.
C. It is never too late for people to start taking exercise.
D. The more exercise we do, the stronger our hearts get.
35. What does Dr. Nieca Goldberg suggest?
A. Making use of the findings.
B. Interviewing the study participants.
C. Conducting further research.
D. Clarifying the purpose of the study.

waiting for you at the gym," while another reason: " 36
" With a workout
partner, you will increase your training effort as there is a subtle(微妙) competition.
So, how do you find a workout partner?
First of all, decide what you want from that person. 37
Or do you just

You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it
probably won't result in a useful response. 38 If you plan on working out in a
gym, that person must belong to the same gym.
My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age. It also listed her favorite sports
and activities, and provided her phone number. 39
You and your partner will
probably have different skills. 40
Over time, both of you will benefit—your
partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. The core (核心) of your relationship is that you will always be there to help each other.
A. Your first meeting may be a little awkward.
B. A workout partner usually needs to live close by.
C. You'll work harder if you train with someone else.
D. Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport?
E. How can you write ago "seeking training partner" notice?
F. Just accept your differences and learn to work with each other.

The average present merely satisfies a temporary desire; the great one becomes more precious with time going by.
When I was a boy of fourteen, I needed to have 80 hours of community service per year and I used to take care of Mrs. Long’s garden, which was near the Presbyterian Church. As a junior high school student, I devoted myself to it, sweeping the fallen leaves and mowing the lawn (修剪草坪). There I learnt how to cut away dry branches and even helped to plant a sapling (小树苗). Tired as I was every time I finished my work, I did enjoy the time there for learning something new. I clearly remembered that Mrs Long, a nice and caring elder, always treated me to delicious meals and drinks. She also loved taking photos, always with an old camera in hand. It was said that the camera was passed down from her father and she cherished it a lot.
Several days before Christmas, she whispered to me, “When Christmas comes, I shall have a present for you.” I spent much time wondering what it would be. The boys I played with had baseball gloves, ice skates and bicycles, and I was so eager to acquire any one of these that I convinced myself that she intended to choose from among them. But at the same time, I had some doubts whether she would buy me such things because she was not that well-off.
The day before Christmas, I went there as before. With the work done, I was going to leave when she pulled me aside. “Kid, wait for a minute,” she said, leading me into her living room. She seated me on a chair, went to another room, and in a moment stood before me holding a small package that under no circumstances could hold a bicycle or a pair of skates or even a baseball glove. It weighed almost nothing.

第二节 读后续写(满分 20 分)
读后续写参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
I took the package with disappointment. So light and small was it that I guessed there must be something valueless. I had been looking forward to the present for so long but I had never expected the result like this. Carrying the package, I tried desperately to contain my facial expression but obviously, Mrs. Long noticed my discontent. With a reassuring smile, she gently patted my shoulder and encouraged me to open the package. Slowly, I was about to unwrap the delicately-packed present when she grasped me at my arm, reminding me to open the package after
arriving home. I nodded at her in gratitude and headed home. The moment I was back, out of curiosity, I placed the package on the table, stared at it for a while, and at last unwrapped it. Paragraph 2:
Opening the package, I was totally astonished. Lying there were several photos of me! I picked up one of them which showed a hard-working figure sweeping the fallen leaves with sweat wetting the whole T-shirt. It was Mrs. Long who carefully recorded such precious moments for me. I had never realized how attentive I was and the wonderful scenes were recorded in great detail. Deeply touched, I expressed how meaningful the present was to Mrs. Long later. Now the photo is still in my album, reminding me of the wonderful days I spent on Mrs. Long’s garden.
