The past two years have been hard many are still unable to travel around with COVID-19 restrictions still in place. Yet it has not stopped Zheng Zheng from discovering different coffee shops on a daily basis.
She is not one of those Internet influencers who check out different fancy cafes to make an income. Like millions who are taking on work-from-home positions, the project manager of an Internet company sees it as a way to escape her small apartment and remain productive.
“As long as there’s Wi-Fi, I can literally work anywhere, “Zheng told CGTN.
Many Silicon Valley executives have been rooting for the rise of remote working (远程办公) since202O. Last May, Twitter announced its work-from-home plans, calling the flexibility “the fourth industrial revolution” Zheng said, “Remote working gives me great flexibility. I could better assign my time, rather than wasting it on things like washing up or taking the subway to the office.”
“Another thing probably is that you can have different sources of income, “the part-time designer and stylist added.
“But still, I believe remote working will never completely replace the traditional means of working,” she said after sharing all the advantages.
One disadvantage she pointed out is missing out on social interactions with your colleagues, and another is the extended working hours.
In a University of Chicago study, employees were found to work longer hours at home for the same task, as focused time was broken up by some distractions like childcare and online meetings.
Robin Dunbar, a professor of the University of Oxford, told CGTN that he believes remote working is overhyped (过度夸大) and certainly won’t last long. “Without face-to-face engagement and those casual meetings, the ‘flow’ that makes things work and work fast will be missing, Work groups quickly lose focus, and the sense of belonging is very quickly lost, he said.
    28. Why does Zheng Zheng explore different coffee shops every day?
    A. To relax herself from working state.
    B. To find out the most delicious coffee.
    C. To look for a better work place for herself.
    D. To check out different fancy cafes to make money.
    29. What advantage does Zheng Zheng value more about remote working?
    A. Low cost. B. The flexibility.
    C. Mental well-being. D. The sense of belonging.
    30. What does the underlined word “extended” in paragraph8mean?
    A. Irregular. B. Continuous. C. Longer than usual. D. Shorter than expected.
    31. What is the attitude of Robin Dunbar to the future of remote working?
    A. Appreciative. B. Uncaring. C. Optimistic. D. Doubtful.

    D
Students at an elementary school in California, with the help of their art teacher, created a telephone hotline that people can call to get cheerful advice from kids during difficult times. In just days, the hotline began getting thousands of calls an hour.
Most people agree that with concerns like COVID-19, extreme weather, and the climate crisis, the last couple of years have been stressful.
Jessica Martin, who teaches art at West Side School in Healdsburg, California, thought her students just might have the magic words to bring calm to people in these difficult times. So Ms. Martin, along with artist Asherah Weiss, worked with students on a project they called “PepToc”.
The project had two parts-one was the hotline, and the other was creating encouraging posters. The two adults worked with students from kindergarten to sixth grade. They had the same basic question for all the students, “What could you say to help or encourage someone else? “Students working on the hotline thought of what they would like to say. When they were ready, Ms. Martin recorded each one. Later, she sorted out the recordings into the different parts of the telephone hotline.
Pressing 1 brings up ideas for people who are “feeling mad, frustrated or nervous”. Helpful suggestions include “punch your pillow” or “go get a cookie”. Pressing 2 results in “words of encouragement and life advice”. By pressing 3, you can hear a group of kindergartners saying together: “You can do it! Keep trying, don’t give up!” Pressing 4 starts the sounds of children giggling and laughing-a sound certain to bring a smile to anyone’s face.
Ms. Martin thought the project would only attract interest from people near the school. But the hotline was soon getting hundreds of calls a day. Words of the hotline spread quickly on social media. The hotline has become incredibly popular with stressed adults, patients in hospitals, older people in homes, and others who just want to hear the happy voices of children.
    32. Who came up with the idea of the project?
    A. Parents of West Side School. B. Jessica Martin and Asherah Weiss.
    C. A student of West Side School. D. The government of Healdsburg.
    33. Which number should a caller press if he feels nervous?
    A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 4.
    34. What was unexpected for Ms. Martin?
    A. The magic of the children. B. The sadness of the people.
    C. The popularity of the hotline. D. The influence of the social media.
    35. What could be the best title for the text?
    A. The Charm of Art Is Beyond Words
    B. A Project Is Carried Out to Study COVID-19
    C. A Hotline Brings Stressful People Hope
    D. Positive Messages From Kids Make a Hotline a Hit

It was the last game of the season. Cali had been playing soccer all summer. She really enjoyed running around with the other players. As much as she tried, though, Cali still had not scored one single goal.
“Don’t give up, “said her coach. He showed Cali and her team how to pass the ball to each other and take shots at the goal. Cali was pretty good at passing the ball, but even during practices, she couldn’t kick the ball past the goalkeeper. She wondered if she should quit soccer for good.
“Don’t give up, “said Uncle George and Aunt Lisa. But it was half-time, and Cali was feeling upset. She was trying! Every time she got a chance to kick the ball, it would go in the wrong direction or a player from the other team would take control of it. Maybe she would try a different sport next summer.
The break was over and the referee (裁判) blew her whistle to start the game again. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. Cali heard her aunt whisper in her ear. “Look for an opportunity to get the ball. You can do it. “Cali took a deep breath. Even if she didn’t get one goal all summer, she knew that she had tried her best. That was something to be proud of.
The yellow team was pretty good, but Cali’s blue team was fast. Cali was off to the side when the ball headed her way. She ran over to it and kicked it. She watched it land right in front of a girl on the yellow team who expertly stopped it and sent it back in the other direction. Cali sighed (叹气) .
Cali decided she’d wait until the game was over and then she was going to hang up her soccer shoes for good. Cali started daydreaming about becoming a hip-hop dancer instead. She was woken from her daydream by some music that was definitely not hip-hop. It was the sweet, happy jingle of the ice cream truck.

Some called out to their parents to buy them one. The soccer game had practically stopped. Cali looked around and saw the soccer ball close by, ignored by the nearest yellow player. Cali smiled. She looked at her aunt, who nodded at her. “Now!” her aunt yelled. Cali didn’t hesitate.

The ball touched the tips of her fingers as it swooshed past, right into the top corner of the net. The referee blew her whistle. “Goal!”

    (Text 1)
M: I like science because it is useful in all areas. Which subject do you like best, Lily?
W: I like history best, because it tells us lots of interesting things.
    (Text 2)
M: Let’s go to the Palace Museum this weekend.
W: Good idea. I have no plans this weekend. I think I can learn something about the Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty there.
    (Text 3)
W: Mr. Smith, have you ever been to the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang?
M: Yes. I went there the year after it was listed as one of the world cultural heritage sites in 1987.
    (Text 4)
W: Dad, where and when was the first Modern Olympics held?
M: In Athens, Greece, in 1896. The Olympics have a history of over 100 years.
    (Text 5)
W: It’s said the Abu Simbel Temple had been covered in sand for 3, 000 years. Is that true?
M: Yes. In 1813, a Swiss man accidently found 4 huge stone figures, which were almost completely covered by sand. That was the Abu Simbel Temple.
    (Text 6)
M: Miki, which university did you go to?
W: Hi, John. I studied at the University of California.
M: And what did you study?
W: I studied many things such as English and Chinese, but I majored in Japanese.
    M: Oh, but why?
W: My mother is from Japan.
    M: Really?
W: She grew up in Nagasaki and moved to Yokohama when she was young, so most of my family are there, in Yokohama and the South. However, my father is from Texas.
    (Text 7)
M: There seems to be so much about the history of Christmas.
W: I know. I don’t know how I will ever remember all of it.
M: I suppose the reason is that it has such a long history.
W: It’s interesting to see how the culture of Christmas has changed over the years.
M: And I suppose that it will continue to change.
W: Do you think that our children will celebrate Christmas differently from how we do now?
M: Possibly. I know one thing for sure.
    W: What’s that?
M: Our children will want more expensive gifts than we got!
    (Text 8)
W: I don’t know why in foreign countries men should always pick up the bill or pay for cinema tickets.
M: Men should take care of women.
W: Men needn’t do that. It puts women in a bad position.
M: Yeah, they should carry their own bags and pay for cinema tickets.
W: Right! Men and women are equal. Women can. . .
M: You mean women can do most things?
W: Yes, sometimes. However, men should help to do the dishes and. .
M: OK, you will carry your own bags next time.
W: Well, I think you will do the dishes now, dear!
    M: Er. . . terrible!
    (Text 9)
M: Belinda! What are you reading?
W: The Travels of Marco Polo. It’s very interesting.
M: Let me have a look at it. Oh! What lovely pictures!
W: Yes. Look, this is Venice. It’s a beautiful old town in Italy.
M: That’s where Marco Polo was born, isn’t it?
W: That’s right. And he and his father and uncle left Italy in 1271 and arrived in China in 1275.
    M: Four years!
W: And they traveled along the famous “Silk Road”.
M: I think they stayed in China for a long time.
W: Um. . . seventeen years. And then they had a really difficult and dangerous journey home. They arrived in Venice in 1295.
    (Text 10)
M: Marie Curie loved to study and hoped to become a scientist from her early childhood. Her interest in science was encouraged by her father, who was a teacher of physics.
In 1891, she left Poland and entered the University of Paris. Four years later, she graduated with the highest grade in her class. Then, she remained in the same university doing scientific research work. In order to discover something that gave off a kind of radiation, she did some experiments carefully again and again. Finally in 1902 she and her husband succeeded in finding the radioactive element-radium. Their achievement won them the Nobel Prize for physics in 1903.
In 1911, she won another Nobel Prize, all by herself in chemistry. Thus she became the first female scientist to win two Nobel Prizes.
