    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项ABCD中,选出最佳选项。

    A

2021·山东济宁市·高三期末)    Fire ants tunnels get dug efficiently by only a small percentage of the group doing most of the work, thus avoiding pileups in tight spaces. What about the freeloaders? They just sit around while their hard-working colleagues get things done. But might freeloaders actually be necessary for society to function efficiently? The answer could be yesat least when it comes to fire ants and their efforts to dig nests underground.

Fire ants are highly social creatures. So, Goldman, a physicist at Georgia Tech, and his colleagues wanted to know how individual ants knew what to do without a central leader issuing orders. To find out, Goldman's team labeled individual fire ants with paint and then watched them dig their narrow tunnels—barely wide enough for two workers. It turned out that just 30 percent of the ants did 70 percent of the labor. "I was surprised that we ended up with so few workers actually doing the work at any one time." A quarter of the ants never even entered the tunnels. Others moved inside, but left without digging a single grain of dirt. These behaviors ensured the crowded tunnels did not get blocked with insect traffic, which would put the construction process to a stop.

And when the scientists removed the five hardest-working ants from the site, others immediately jumped in to take up their positions-with no reduction in the group's productivity. It seems that it doesn't matter which ants are working or freeloading at a given time, as long as there is some division of labor to keep the tunnels flowing smoothly. The findings appeared in the journal Science.

The study could have implications for robotics. Imagine groups of robots sent to search the ruins for disaster survivors or nanobots coursing through our bodies to detect illness and deliver targeted medical treatment. Such robot groups will need to avoid getting jammed up in tight spaces.

1Why are only a few ants needed to do the digging work?

ATo give full play to the able. BTo take care of the old ones.

CTo improve their work efficiency. DTo free some ants to do other work.

2How did Goldman carry out the research?

    ABy direct observation. BBy classification.

CBy citing previous data. DBy handing out questionnaires.

    3What does Goldman's research indicate?

AIndividuals matter in work. BMany hands make light work.

CGood leadership guarantees productivity. DSpecific division of labor boosts efficiency.

4What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

ARobots are not suitable for team work. BSmaller robots should be used to treat patients.

CMore robots have to be sent to do rescue work. DSome robots should be programmed to freeload.

2020·湖南郴州市·高三月考)    A decade ago, at the end of my first semester teaching at Captain, my student Jack stopped by for office hours. He sat down and burst into tears. My mind started cycling through a list of events that could make a college junior cry: His girlfriend had broken up with him; he had been accused of cheating in exams; he forgot to turn in papers before the deadline. "I just got my first A minus," he said.

Year after year, I watch in depression as students are crazy about getting straight A's. Some sacrifice their health; a few have even tried to charge their school after failure. They believe top marks are a ticket to elite graduate schools and rewarding job opportunities. I was one of them. I started college with the goal of graduating with a GPA of 4.0. It would be a reflection of my brainpower and willpower, showing that I had the right things to succeed. But I was wrong.

The evidence is clear: Across industries, research shows that the association between grades and job performance is modest in the first year after college and insignificant within a handful of years. For example, at Microsoft, once employees are two or three years out of college, their grades have nothing to do with their performance.( Of course, it must be said that if you got D's, you probably wouldn't end up at Microsoft.)

Academic grades rarely assess qualities like creativity, leadership and teamwork skills, or social, emotional and political intelligence. Yes, straight A students master large amounts of information and reproduce it in exams. But career success is rarely about finding the right solution to a problemit's more about finding the right problem to solve. This might explain why Steve Jobs finished high school with a GPA of 2.65, and Martin Luther King Jr. got only one A in his four years at Morehouse.

    5Why did Jack feel sad

AHis girlfriend abandoned him. BHe was caught cheating in exams.

CHe failed to get straight A's. DHe didn't hand in his paper in time.

6What did the author once believe

AIt was wrong to care too much about marks. BFailure was schools' fault.

CMarks didn't reflect willpower and brainpower. DTop marks meant well-paid job offers.

7Why are the employees at Microsoft mentioned

ATo indicate academic performance is important.

BTo stress the company values employees with top marks.

CTo introduce successful examples in the technology industry.

DTo show academic excellence isn't a strong predictor of career performance.

8What should people focus more on to succeed

AHow to solve a problem. BWhat problem to be solved.

CHow to be a creative leader. DWhat to do with detailed information.

2020·广东广州市·华南师大附中高三月考)    Most of us have spent more time at home recently than we ever imagined possible. Maybe you took the opportunity to clean, or maybe you plan to do it tomorrow. These tips can help make your house better for your body and your mind.

Think about keeping your home clean the minute you walk in. Take off your shoes at your door. A University of Arizona study found that the average shoe harbors nearly 421,000 different bacteria, including Escherichia coli and strep. Pesticides, tar, lead, mold, and cleaning chemicals can also get tracked into your home via your shoes. Leave a pair of slippers by the front door.

Even if you think you’ve disinfected everything, you might have overlooked some germ magnets(磁铁). One notorious offender: the toothbrush holder. Rinse it daily and run it through the dishwasher regularly. Another germ magnet: kitchen sponges. They’re so unhealthful they’ve been banned from restaurant kitchens.

Portable ultraviolet (紫外线) lights are a highly boasted germ killer. Hospitals use powerful UVC light to disinfect rooms, as it can kill viruses (possibly even the new coronavirus). But beware: not all home disinfecting systems use UVC, and some UV lights can quickly burn your skin.

Don't forget to clean the air in your home too. The gold standard is a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter( ). The Department of Energy requires that they remove 99.97 percent of pollutants and particles(颗粒) in the air.

Portable HEPA filters can clean a single room or the entire house. There are cheaper ways to clean the air-start by cracking a window. Indoor air can have two to five times more pollutants than outdoor air.

Many viruses don’t spread as well in moist air as they do in the cold, dry months.

One easy solution for the winter: using a humidifier. The CDC advises against cool-mist humidifiers, which can contain bacteria if they aren’t cleaned regularly.

Old-fashioned steam humidifiers are best. But too much humidity can worsen respiratory(呼吸的) problems and encourage the growth of dust mites.

9What should you do before you walk into your house?

ATake off your coat. BChange your shoes.

CClean up the bacteria. DDust off the shoes.

10What does the CDC think of the cool-mist humidifiers?

AIt is a must in winter.

    BIt can worsen respiratory problems.

CIt is not as good as the old-fashioned steam humidifiers.

DIt is an easy solution for dry seasons.

11Which is NOT the way introduced in the passage to make the house cleaner?

AFreshen your sheets. BWash toothbrush holders.

CDisinfect rooms by UVC light. DClean the air with HEPA filters.

12Which of the following is probably the best title for the text?

AHow to Do Cleaning. BKeep Yourself Healthy.

CMake Your Mind Booster. DGet a Healthy Home.

2020·湖南永州市·高三月考)    When germs, such as bacteria or viruses, invade the body, they attack and multiply.16The immune system uses several tools to fight infection(感染). Blood contains red blood cells, for carrying oxygen to tissues and organs, and white or immune cells, for fighting infection. These white cells consist primarily of macrophages(巨噬细胞), B cells and T cells.

Macrophages swallow up and digest germs, plus dead and dying cells. They leave behind parts of the invading germs called antigens(抗原).17B cells are defensive white blood cells which produce antibodies. T cells are also defensive white blood cells. They attack cells in the body that have already been infected.

The first time the body comes across a germ, it can take several days to make and use all the germ fighting tools needed to get over the infection. After the infection, the immune system remembers what is learned about how to protect the body against that disease.

18They help develop immunity by imitating an infection. This type of infection, however, almost never causes illness, but it does cause the immune system to produce T cells and antibodies. Sometimes, after getting a vaccine (疫苗), the imitation infection can cause minor symptoms. For instance, a fever.19

Once the imitation infection goes away, the body is left with a supply of defensive cells that will remember how to find that disease in the future.20Therefore, it is possible that a person infected with the disease just before or just after vaccination could develop symptoms and get a disease, because the vaccine has not had enough time to provide protection.

AVaccines basically work the same way.

BThis invasion, called an infection, is what causes illness.

CVaccines prevent diseases that can be dangerous, or even deadly

DScientists take many different approaches to developing vaccines.

E.The body identifies them as dangers and excites antibodies to attack them.

F.Such minor symptoms are normal and should be expected as the body builds immunity.

G.However, it typically takes a few weeks for the body to produce those defensive cells after vaccination.

Long, long ago, in a little village lived a humble(谦虚的) man named Ashwin. He went about making ends meet by pulling a rickshaw(人力 ) and transporting passengers from one destination to another. Times were hard and he had to take the responsibility for supporting his family.

One day, while returning from work, a man who looked like a wealthy person coming from the city stopped his rickshaw. He quickly told Ashwin the place he wanted to visit. His car had broken down and he desperately needed to get to the mentioned address urgently. After an uneventful ride, they reached the destination, and the passenger paid the fare.

Ashwin, on returning home, found to his surprise that his passenger just then had dropped a small bag in his rickshaw. On opening it, he found 50 gold coins in it. He showed it to his family who couldn’t believe their luck. His wife said with joy, “Thank goodness. Now we find a solution to our problems.”

That night, Ashwin couldn’t sleep. His conscience(良心) kept troubling him. At the crack of dawn, he woke his wife up. He said, “Lalita, I think it’s wrong to keep someone else’s gold coins. I am going to search for the man and hand over the coins to him.” Lalita was shocked and cried, but Ashwin stuck to his word. He tried hard to find the man, but nothing seemed to work.

Eventually when he was about to give up, he saw that wealthy passenger. Ashwin ran to him and thrust() the bag in his hand, “Sir, you left this bag in my rickshaw. I have been looking for you since then and I am so relieved to find you. Please take this,” he said.
