(2022·江苏无锡·中考真题)Have you ever watched a show about the wild? A shark (鲨鱼) eats a seal! Lions run down a gazelle! Is all nature like that? All about eating and blood? Or is that just what keeps our eyes glued to the TV screen? Let’s look at sonic living things who work with each other instead of ripping each other apart.
When a lion kills a gazelle, it wants to eat as much as it can and maybe share the rest with its family. There are some living things that will take small pieces of another living thing’s body. Parasitism is when one living thing gets its energy from another living thing, does not give anything back, and hurts the thing it’s taking things from.
Now let’s get a little nicer. Sometimes a living thing will live off the body of another living thing without hurting it. They do not steal anything. They do not bite. Commensalism is when two living things live together and one gets good things out of it while the other is not hurt by it. Have you seen a picture of a whale (鲸) with rocky white things stuck to its skin? Those are barnacles(藤壶). They attach themselves to the whale, so nothing will try to eat them and they can eat things that float by.
Now let’s get really nice. While sharks are biting and lions are fighting, are there any animals that just get along? Yes! Actually, there are many. Mutualism is when two living things work together and both get good things out of it. Bees and flowers are the most common example. Without flowers, bees could not make honey. Without bees, flowers could not make new seeds. It’s win-win for these two. There are lots of animals that get along. Birds will live on the backs of zebras and eat the ticks that are drinking the zebra’s blood. The bird gets food. The zebra gets its ticks taken away. In some of these cases, one animal could not live without the other.
We use the word “Symbiotic (共生的)” for all of these kinds of relationships. Sometimes it’s good for one and bad for the other. Sometimes it’s just good for one. Sometimes it’s even good for both. So, it is nice to know that there are some living things out there that are finding ways to live together. We could pay attention to the animals that do not always make it on TV.
1.The writer mentioned a TV show about the wild in Paragraph 1 to ________.
A.tell a story B.solve a mystery

2.Which of the following best describes the relationship between bees and flowers?

(2022·江苏无锡·中考真题)
Lupe Medrano, a shy girl, was a straight-A student. Though Lupe had a sharp mind, she could not, no matter how much she tried, run as fast as the other girls. The truth was that Lupe was no good in sports.
“I’ll never be good at sports.” She felt angry one rainy day as she lay on her bed, looking at the shelf her father had made to hold her awards. “I wish I could win something, anything, even marble(弹珠).”
At the word “marbles”, she sat up. “That’s it. Maybe I could be good at playing marbles, and marbles is a sport.” She rushed out of her room and found the marbles in her brother’s room.
She practiced shooting softly at first. The marble rolled from her thumb(拇指) and clicked against the targeted(作为目标的) marble. But the target wouldn’t budge. She tried again and again, but the power from her thumb made the targeted marble roll only an inch or two.
She realized her thumb was weak and then decided to squeeze(捏) a rubber eraser one hundred times, hoping it would strengthen her thumb.
The weeks passed quickly. Lupe worked so hard that one day, while she was drying dishes, her mother asked why her thumb was swollen(肿胀的).
“It’s muscle,” Lupe explained, “I’ve been practicing for the marbles championship.”
“You, honey?” Her mother, Mrs. Medrano, knew Lupe was no good in sports.
“Yeah, I beat Alfonso, and he’s pretty good.”
When her father, Mr. Medrano, heard this, he was very happy and encouraged Lupe.
Practice, practice, practice. Lupe got better and better. Then the day of the championship came. She beat her first competitor easily, and won one marble, and then one after another. At last, Lupe was in the final to play against a girl in a baseball cap. The girl never even looked at Lupe.
“I don’t know, Dad. She looks tough.”
“You can do it,” her father encouraged. “Just think of the marbles, not the girl, and let your thumb do the work.”
It was a tough fight. But finally Lupe won the most marbles and became the winner!
“I did it!” Lupe said under her breath. She rose from her knees, which hurt from bending all day, and hugged her father.
Back home, in her own bedroom, she was happy. She had always won praise because of her brains, but winning in sports was a new experience. She thanked her tired thumb. “You did it, thumb. You made me champion.” As its reward, Lupe went to the bathroom, filled the bathroom sink with warm water, and let her thumb swim as it pleased. Then she climbed into bed and fell into her sweet dreams.

As I got older, I did grow a little bigger, but not a lot bigger. On my 12th birthday, I decided to try a new sport: running. I told Grandpa. “I’m going to be an athlete.”
“Dave.” Grandpa began gently, “if you can’t be big, you can do something big.”
I ran 12 miles on my 12th birthday. On my 13th birthday, I did it again, but I added an extra mile. On my 14th birthday, I ran 14 miles. 15 on my 15th, 16 on my 16th, and you guessed it—17 miles on my 17th birthday.

(2022·江苏苏州·中考真题)All aboard! Let’s take a ride on the world’s highest railway—the Qinghai-Tibet Railway(青藏铁路). Sit back and enjoy the journey. Get ready for the trip of a lifetime.
We’re leaving Qinghai Station. The scenery along the way is some of the wildest in all of China. Keep your eyes open as we race through this beautiful land. You might see a rare Tibetan antelope(藏羚羊)from your window.
Before we begin our journey, let’s learn about this amazing railway. It’s truly one of the great engineering wonders of the 21st century. When it was completed on July 1, 2006, the Tibet Railway set nine world records, including the world’s highest railway at 5,072 metres above sea level, the world’s highest tunnel(隧道)at 4,905 metres, and the longest tunnel ever built on permafrost(冻土).
As we travel higher, the air gets thinner and thinner. Soon there will only be 50 to 60 percent of the oxygen which we are used to breathing. But don’t be afraid. Each rail car has two separate oxygen systems. One system spreads oxygen throughout the train at all times. And each passenger can also get a personal oxygen mask just like those used in planes.
Here are a few more things to think about as our train leaves the station. The designers solved three main challenges when building this great railway. First, the high altitude(海拔)made the task difficult because there was no enough oxygen. Second, much of the railway runs across permafrost, a type of ground that keeps changing as the weather warms and cools. Finally, the railway goes through some of the most sensitive ecology(敏感的生态环境)in China. Great care was necessary to make sure of the smallest possible influence on nature.
All three challenges were met, making our trip possible. All aboard! The train to Tibet is leaving in fifteen minutes.
30.Where are the passengers?
A.On a bus. B.On a train. C.On a ship. D.On a plane.
31.How does the text show the railway is amazing in paragraph 3?
A.By telling a story. B.By using a designer’s words.
C.By introducing its world records. D.By comparing the present with the past.
32.How many oxygen systems are there in each rail car?
A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.
33.Which of the following increased the difficulty of building the railway?
A.The changing ground. B.The polluted air. C.The dangerous animals. D.The hot weather.

(2022·江苏扬州·中考真题)Researchers at China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp, a State-owned defense contractor, have developed and made the world’s first robot whale shark(鲸鲨).
The robotic shark has been on display in an aquarium(水族馆)at Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park since January.
A whale shark is a slow-moving carpet shark and the largest known living fish.
Designed and built by engineers at the Shenyang-based No 111 Factory, the underwater robot is 4.7 meters long, weighs 350 kilograms and can move 42 meters a minute.
Powered by a lithium battery, it can swim, turn, float and dive like a real shark by moving its mechanical fins(鳍). The mouth and gills(鳃)can also open and close like a shark’s. The biomimetic shark is made of sensors(传感器), multi-joint fins, batteries, and systems which enable it to avoid what’s in the way in all directions.
“The robot can reach a depth of 10 meters and work for as long as 10 hours,” said Fang Xuelin, a senior researcher in charge of the robot shark program.
“The shark can be remotely controlled and can also swim based on preset programs or its own sensors,” he said.
“We have built multiple kinds of robot fishes, and the robotic whale shark is the largest mechanical fish we have made so far,” Fang added. “Our robots are to serve three purposes—to perform in aquariums for entertainment, spread knowledge about the sea and aquatic(水生的)animals among youngsters, and carry out scientific tasks such as hydrological surveys, underwater photography and environmental inspection.”

“You don’t talk much, Grandpa,” Lisa said.
“You don’t visit much, Lisa,” her grandfather replied.

“You coming?” Grandpa’s voice sounded muffled. His words were coming from inside the storehouse.
Lisa went inside. The storehouse was full of all kinds of things. She could see him in the far corner. Lisa walked over and stood next to him. He pointed to a small wooden box with “Lisa” painted on it in bright green letters.
“Yours,” he said.
Lisa bent down and opened it. In it were some old things—a bright blue feather, a tiny V-shape leaf and some dolls. She looked up at Grandpa, with tears in her eyes.
“The box stays here, but it belonged to you. No one else.” Then he closed his eyes and smiled. His smile reminded Lisa of her father. Grandpa no longer seemed strange and silent.
“I may be so overcapitalized (过剩),” Lisa answered, carefully pronouncing the familiar word.
Grandpa laughed out loud. “How did that eight-year-old brain of yours find its way around a big word like ‘overcapitalized’?”
“It’s my dad’s favourite word,” Lisa replied.

(2021·江苏泰州·中考真题)
Just the other day, I was in a bookshop and found a book named How to make friends with foreigners. As a Canadian living in China for a year, I was curious to see what kind of advice a Chinese writer giving on this matter.
One piece of advice really caught my attention and, I must say, made me feel quite angry. In the writer’s opinion, foreigners are an "opportunity (机会)" to improve your oral English; whenever you see a foreigner, American or English, you should practise speaking English with him or her. If the foreigner doesn’t want to answer your questions, then he or she is a rude person who you wouldn’t want to spend time with anyway. I think this advice is not only incorrect, but also may harm the relationship between Chinese and foreigners in China.
Like most other "Lao Wai" living in China, I know how lonely one can sometimes feel living in a culture different from our own familiar (熟悉的) ways. However, I simply accept as part of being here. So far my time in China has been rewarding. I have improved my Chinese language skills, learned about one of the fastest developing countries in the world today and made some very close Chinese friends.
However, I have also met many Chinese people who consider me only as an "opportunity" to improve their oral English. I have had people following me from town to my flat to trouble me to teach them English. I have had complete strangers throwing articles or speeches in my face, insisting that I help them with the English translation. I have had people asking me non-stop questions for half an hour at the weekly English Corner ...
Friendship for a lot of foreigners is about spending time with someone whose company (陪伴) they really enjoy. So if there is any advice to give on making and keeping friendships with foreigners, I would say that it is this: Treat foreigners as people, not opportunities. Expect to make friendships step by step, over a period of time, not in a rush. ________ If your only reason for becoming fiends with a foreigner is to improve your English, then you will probably find that you don’t have a foreign friend for long.
55.Where is the writer of this passage from?
A.America B.China C.Canada D.England
56.Why is the writer of the passage interested in the book "How to make friends with foreigners" ?

D.Because he wants to know about the Chinese writer’s advice on this topic.
57.According to the writer of the book "How to make friends with foreigners" , ________.
A.his advice may make foreigners angry
B.it is rude of you to ask a foreigner questions
C.you should choose a good foreigner to practise English with
D.don’t waste time on a foreigner who doesn’t answer your questions
58.In the fourth paragraph, the writer uses "I have had…" three times, because ________.
A.he had no better sentences to express his ideas.
B.he wanted to show how he hated to make friends with Chinese.
C.he wanted to show how he hated to be treated as an “opportunity”.
D.he met Chinese who wanted to make friends with him only three times.

Herman planted the hot peppers (胡椒) in his five-hectare field in his town. The 36-year-old man put up a sign reading “Africa Hema Village” in Chinese, English and his native language. His first harvest will start this
month. Herman studied in China from 2011 to 2018, receiving his master’s degree and a doctorate in environmental science. He returned to Rwanda in 2018 with his wife, Yang Hong, who is from China, and started his own business. Hema Xiansheng CEO Hou Yi visited Rwanda to find quality products to bring to the Chinese market. Hot peppers were one of his discoveries. The couple helped Hou’s team, from research to field trips, testing production processes (加工) and so on. They also helped Hema Xiansheng’s purchasing (采购) manager, Chen Huifang, when she led a team of eight to visit Rwanda to research the possibilities of making hot pepper products that suit Chinese preferences.
“We wore rubber gloves when we touched them. Our fingers still felt hot the next day,” Chen said. Their research and development team spent four days studying and cooking the peppers. Transporting fresh hot peppers to China proved difficult, so the fresh peppers can’t be imported (进口) into China. Then Chen’s team decided to perform basic processing in Rwanda before shipping. Processing requires a careful balance. Too much salt will make the peppers less delicious. Too little, and the peppers may go bad. Because plastics mustn’t be used in Rwanda, they had to find proper ways to carry the pepper sauce. The material they first used couldn’t stand the long flights. Now Chen is happy to see that the pepper sauce has sold well in Hema’s offline and online stores.
Herman pointed out that few local farmers grow hot peppers because the market is small. A small amount is sold to Europe. And local need is limited due to its spiciness. So, about half the harvest is wasted every year. A young man in Rwanda will only make 10 yuan ($1.4) a day by working in the cities, but if they grow hot peppers due to Hema’s orders, they can make 50 to 60 yuan a day. Herman expressed his willingness to introduce more people to make more money by farming, rather than working for lower incomes, when e-commerce (电子商务) can bring greater needs and sales.
“It’s a chance for Rwandan people to join the new field and change their lives,” Herman said, “Through building more Hema Villages, Rwanda has the chance to become a country of digital agriculture.”

Sir Henry said he wanted to go to Baskerville Hall.
“OK”, said Holmes. “But you mustn't go alone. Watson can go with you. "
Sir Henry and I agreed to take the 10:30 train on Saturday.
Holmes thought deeply on the way home: the story of the Hound, Sir Charles's death, the strange letter, the missing boot and the black-bearded man. He sat in his room all afternoon, smoking and thinking.
Just before dinner, a telegram arrived. It said,“Barrymore is at Baskerville Hall. "
“That becomes a dead end, Watson. We will have to look for another way to go forward.
Just then the door bell rang. It was the cab driver who drove the man with the black beard. “I got a message that you are asking for me", he said. “I've never had a complaint. I came here to ask you what you had against me! ”
“No, no, ”said Holmes.“ Instead, I'll give you money if you tell me about the man in your cab this morning. He watched this house at 10:00 and then told you to follow the two gentlemen. "

“It's serious, my friend, and you may be in trouble if you refuse to answer.”

(2018·江苏扬州·中考真题)“Growing up, Einstein saw his father struggle to support the family and move the family for different jobs, Einstein had to move between schools and it was challenging for him to catch up with his new class.”
This story about the struggles(f +)of famous scientists can't be found in your science textbook, but a new study suggested maybe it should be.
In the study, 402 9th- and 10th-grade students from four New York City high schools in low-income areas were divided into three groups. The students read some 800-word stories about Albert Einstein and Marie Curie. The control group read a regular science textbook description about their great achievements. Another group read about the scientists' personal struggles, like Einstein's running away from Nazi Germany. The third group read about the scientists' intellectual struggles, as they tried different experiments--- and failed.
As it turned out. the students who had read about scientists' struggles, whether personal or intellectual, had higher grades than students who had read about achievements. Those who weren’t getting good grades to begin with gained the most. Those in the control group not only didn't see a grade increase, they had lower grades than the grading before the study began.
“We think that struggle stories showed scientists' weaknesses.” the researchers write, “which creates a sense of connection between the students and scientists. And that may make it easier for students to see them as role models.”
“When kids think Einstein is a talent who is untouchable, then they believe they will never get there, "said lead researcher Xiaodong Lin-Siegler, PhD.
If we want to educate a future generation of great scientists, we can start by changing the way we talk about the great scientists of the past. An 800-word story about scientists’ failures, not just their achievements, in science textbooks will make it happen.
76.What does the article mainly talk about?
A.Learning about struggles of scientists may help students succeed in science.
B.Reading stories of scientists' achievements will help educate future scientists.
C.Science textbooks should describe scientists failures instead of their achievements.
D.Stories of scientists' struggles may make students see scientists as being untouchable.
77.From Paragraph 4, we can know that .
A.those good at science achieved most from this exercise
B.the control group had lower grades than the other two groups
C.the students' grades in the control group remained the same
D.the students in the third group had the highest grades
78.What's the main idea for Paragraphs 5 and 6?
A.Findings of the study
B.Explanations from the researchers
C.Process of the stud
D.Suggestions from the researchers
79.In the study, which of the following would the third group probably read?
A.Einstein won many awards in his life, including the 1921 Nobel Prize in physics.
B.Going to college was hard for Curie because at that time women were not allowed to attend school. So, Curie had to study at secret classes.

(2022·江苏·淮安市淮安区教师发展中心学科研训处一模)Do you still remember the lesson from China’s Tiangong space station last year? On March 23, astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu gave another one! It was live—streamed(直播)worldwide. What fun experiments(实验)did they do this time?
A bridge of water
How do you build a “bridge” with water? It’s hard to do it on Earth. But in the space station, with little gravity, it’s quite easy!
In the lesson, Wang Yaping first made two water balls on two plates, then let them touch each other. Next, Wang pulled the two plates away, and the water between them didn’t break. It became a “bridge”! This is because the surface tension(张力)of water is not disturbed(干扰)by gravity in space. The surface tension keeps the “skin” of the water strong so that the bridge doesn’t break.
Separate water and oil
If we mix oil and water in a bottle on Earth, we can separate them quickly because they have different densities(密度). Gravity brings the water down while the oil stays on top. However, if you do this in the space station, with no gravity, oil and water will mix together.
How can we separate them, then? In the lesson, Ye Guangfu rotated(旋转)the bottle to create centrifugal force(离心力). With this man—made gravity, the heavier water and the lighter oil are separated.
83.We can build a “bridge” with water easily because of ________ in space.
A.the surface of water B.the strong “skin” of water
C.little gravity D.much gravity
84.If we mix oil and water in a bottle in the space station, ________.
A.they will be separated B.they will mix together
C.the oil will go down D.the water will stay on the top
85.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.The astronauts only gave one lesson from the space station.
B.The two experiments were live—streamed in China.
C.We can build a “bridge” with water on Earth easily.
D.On Earth, oil and water can be separated soon in a bottle.

In the afternoon, Becky found herself walking around the yard and feeling very sad. She said to herself, “I haven’t got anything to remember Tom by. He’s gone now. I’ll never, never see him any more.”
Then there was an argument about who saw the dead boys last in life. Many said they did and offered evidence. When it was finally decided who saw the dead boys last, the lucky ones took upon themselves some self-importance.
The next morning, when the bell began to toll(鸣钟), the villagers got together in the church. No one could remember when the little church had been so full before. Aunt Polly entered. She was followed by Sid and Mary and by the Harper family. They were all in deep black. As the funeral(葬礼)continued, people felt sorry that they didn’t treat the boys well before. They only saw faults(缺点)in them. People gave way to their feelings and cried.
A moment later, the church door opened slowly. People raised their eyes above handkerchiefs(手帕)and they were surprised. They saw Tom, Joe and Huck——the three dead boys—walk into the church! They had been hiding and listening to their own funeral.
Aunt Polly, Mary and the Harpers threw themselves upon their children and kissed them again and again. Tom got hundreds of kisses that day. Before this, he didn’t know he was loved by so many people.
