Many in the US would say Abraham Lincoln is the greatest president. Lincoln is still known for being a great public speaker and a man of honesty. He’s also a symbol of equality. The year 2022 marks the 213th anniversary of his birth.
Lincoln served as the 16th US president, from 1861 until his being killed in 1865. Lincoln’s dramatic death and the events that surrounded him have made his presidency a highlight of US history.
Immediately after his election to office, the southern states declared independence and formed their own country, the Confederate States of America, commonly referred to as the Confederacy.
In the southern states, slavery(奴隶制度)formed the base of the southern economy and was greatly profitable for southern farmers. According to Greg Timmons at History.com, the Confederacy was the world’s fourth-richest country. However, many people felt that slavery was deeply immoral. When the issue could no longer be ignored, Lincoln was the man in the White House. He guided the country through a bloody civil war, one which saw neighbors fight each other.
As the war was ending, Lincoln had more work to do. Making some changes to the US laws was difficult, but Lincoln helped create three amendments (修正案). One of them put an end to the slavery of African-Americans. Another allowed the former slaves to vote in elections.
These events forever changed the country. Unfortunately, Lincoln would not live to see these changes. He was shot from behind while watching a play. The killer, John Wilkes Booth, said that it was for allowing freed slaves to vote.
Lincoln’s death strengthened his position as an all-time great president. US Civil War historian James M. McPherson makes it clear: “If Lincoln had been a failure, he would have lived a longer life.”
24. How old was Lincoln when he became president of the US?
A. 42. B. 50. C. 52. D. 56.
25. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 imply?
A. As a president it was Lincoln’s duty to solve the problem.
B. After becoming president, Lincoln lived in the White House.
C. Lincoln was protected extremely well in the White House.
D. In the White House Lincoln knew nothing about the issue.
26. Why was Lincoln killed?
A. Because he guided the US civil war.
B. Because he punished some southern farmers.
C. Because he changed the history of the US.
D. Because he gave former slaves voting rights.
27. What does James M. McPherson want to convey?
A. Lincoln was a great president.
B. Lincoln suffered many failures.
C. Lincoln wasn’t a successful politician.
D. Lincoln’s failure led to his early death.
C
What would you look like when you are 80 years old? It seems too far away to imagine, but an app named FaceApp tries to show you.
The app creates transformations of users’ faces using various filters(滤镜)and features. The FaceApp aging challenge went viral last month. Even many celebrities like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber shared their wrinkly, grey-haired selfies on social media.
FaceApp helps us stop thinking of things that don’t matter and focus on the present. “We view these images as inferred fiction, not realized and therefore unreal,” US author Nicci Gerrard told The New York Times. “We think of our younger selves, because in one sense that’s who we are. Our younger stories are all still part of us, while our older selves don’t yet exist.” However, not everyone can laugh at their older selves. For some, aging is terrifying and it’s hard to accept what the future holds in terms of looks and feelings. As MetroUK noted, “ FaceApp is making people into a painful crisis.”
In addition, FaceApp is facing a number of accusations regarding user privacy. When a user makes changes to a photo, it needs to be uploaded to the servers in Russia, where the company is located, then AI filters your image and sends it back to you. By using the app, you grant FaceApp the license to use, reproduce, change, adapt, and publish your image, as stated in its service agreement.
Despite the concerns over privacy, however, FaceApp does light up the Internet. It gives us the chance to take a look at our futures and perhaps let us consider how to prepare for it.
28. What can FaceApp do?
A. Tell how old users are. B. Show users’ images in old age.
C. Test users’ imagination. D. Help users contact celebrities.
29. Which of the following can replace the underlined words in Paragraph 2?
A. Caused trouble. B. Got updated.
C. Led to doubts. D. Became popular.
30. Which opinion may Nicci Gerrard agree with?
A. We should make full preparations for old age.
B. It’s unnecessary now for us to consider old age.
C. Our young stories deserve to be remembered.
D. It’s a good idea for us to stop using FaceApp.
31. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. How FaceApp gets users’ privacy involved.
B. What punishment FaceApp is faced with.
C. How well FaceApp company serves users.
D. What FaceApp service agreement contains.

With the digital revolution, people’s lives are being transformed. The mobile phone is a symbol of this development. Nearly everyone uses mobile phones, as they allow us to complete modern tasks conveniently and effectively. 32
Mobile phones are a threat to our health. 33 This will cause overweight and some other problems. Mobile phones have a particularly great impact on children's health, even affecting the normal development of their brain and body.
It’s also true that too much use of mobile phones can make us cold and distant. How many times have you noticed that people sit with each other, but don’t interact? Our dependence on phones reduces our opportunities for face-to-face communication. 34
Mobile phones also take up much of our time that could be better used in other things. They may include learning, playing sports, going sightseeing and so on. 35 On
the contrary, the only result after a long time spent on mobile phones, like playing video games or watching video clips is that we may not only feel tired, but empty in mind.
36 It is certainly convenient, but it also encourages us to be lazy about our physical health and our relationships with the people closest to us. Wouldn’t it be a good idea, once in a while, to turn off the phone and step out into the country, to enjoy the scenery and in the meantime get some exercise with the people we love?
A. It will cause our interpersonal communicating skills to suffer.
B. However, we should not overlook their bad influences.
C. All in all, the mobile phone has positives and negatives.
D. Anyway, the convenience of mobile phones can’t be ignored.
E. Mobiles are also used by students or learners to cheat in the exams.
F. The activities are mentally and physically beneficial to us.
G. Using them for too long tends to make us passive and ignore physical exercise.

Lisa woke up on Saturday morning very excited. Today she was turning 10. She thought her mother would make her a special breakfast. Last year on her birthday, Lisa woke up to the smell of pancakes and sausage cooking. The kitchen table was full of fresh fruit and juice, and her family had even bought lots of fresh flowers to put on the table.
But when she went downstairs this morning, her father, mother and brother were eating cereal (麦片) at the table, just like any other day. No one even said “Happy birthday.”
When the phone rang and her mother announced that Lisa’s aunt wanted to speak with her, she knew that it must be to wish her the best on her 10th birthday. But to Lisa’s surprise, her aunt simply wanted to remind her to pick up her mail the next week while her aunt was out of town.
Lisa was quite confused. She thought that her family would say something about her special day, but she didn’t want to seem upset. She tried to be cheerful. After all, she was looking forward to meeting her friends in the park soon. Surely they were going to be excited about her birthday.
When Lisa arrived at the park, her friend Jane was the first to greet her. “Nice day, isn’t it, Lisa?” she asked.
Lisa, ready for her friend to wish her a happy birthday, responded excitedly, “Yes, it is! It’s a great day. You know why?”
“Because it’s Saturday and the weather is great!” Jane replied.
Lisa nodded, but looked down in disappointment.
Soon the rest of her friends arrived, and they all had a good time playing soccer and spending time together. But Lisa couldn’t help but think that it was strange that none of them had mentioned her birthday.
As she walked home in the late afternoon sun, Lisa tried her best not to cry. How could everyone forget her birthday? She was close to tears by the time she reached her home.

On stepping in, Lisa was quite surprised. The living room was beautifully decorated, yet nobody was in sight. Before Lisa realized it, an excited shout came, “A surprise”. People crowded from behind the door, sofa and cupboard. Lisa saw her mother, father, brother, aunt, Jane and other friends she just said goodbye to standing around her, all laughing. “They all remember my birthday!” thought Lisa. Instantly, she felt her eyes a little wet. On the table lay a lovely birthday cake and her aunt was signaling all to gather around.
When the birthday candles were lit, the warmest moment came. Everyone sent best wishes to Lisa heartily and gifts began to pile up in her arms. Then came the birthday song sung gently together. In the soft candlelight, every smiling face was so touching. Looking around, Lisa felt a strong feeling arise, and that was happiness. “ How happy I am! I’m so blessed to have so many people to love me” Lisa thought. Tears welled up into her eyes again.

Text 10
M: Almost two-thirds of children want their parents to spend more time reading to them before bed. ⑰Researchers said most of these kids like Mom’s storytelling more than Dad’s. They carried out a study that showed younger children aged 3-4 were most hungry for more stories. ⑱Over three-quarters of them said they wished their parents to read to them more often.
About half of all children aged 3-8 said story time was their favorite pastime with their parents.
According to the research, there are two ways for mothers to become best storytellers. ⑲They can use funny voices to show different characters in a story. They can also make their own special sounds to keep the story interesting and attractive. When Mom and Dad are not at hand, celebrities will do. Over 30 percent of children said they would like to hear a bedtime story from famous people like Harry Potter, starred by Daniel Radcliffe. Other movie stars like Zac Efron, Miley Cyrus and Emma Watson are also welcomed by children.
⑳“It can be very difficult for parents to find the time to read with their children. But these moments can help build close relationship between parents and children, and also can play an important part in their child’s development,” said child psychologist Richard Woolfson.

21. B 细节理解题 从Contagion中的“It makes it clear that a virus is a life form to seek out new hosts because its carriers die — as it must to survive, and it must always stay one jump ahead of death.”
22. B 细节理解题 从Flu 中的第一句 “A virus sweeps through a South Korean city and the government orders a complete shutdown to separate the community.”
23. C 推理判断题 在The Hot Zone 中“A US Army scientist, Nancy Jaax, risks her life to prevent an outbreak.”
24. C 细节理解题 根据第一段最后一句“The year 2022 marks the 213th anniversary of his birth.”和第二段第一句“Lincoln served as the 16th US president, from 1861 until his being killed in 1865.”
25. A 推理判断题 根据第四段划线句及前后句“However, many people felt that slavery was deeply immoral. When the issue could no longer be ignored, Lincoln was the man in the White House. He guided the country through a bloody civil war, one which saw neighbors fight each other.” 故选A项。
26. D 细节理解题 根据第六段最后一句“The killer, John Wilkes Booth, said that it was for allowing freed slaves to vote.”
27. A 细节理解题 根据全文最后一句“If Lincoln had been a failure, he would have lived a longer life.” 故选A项。
C
29. D 根据划线词语后面的内容“Even many celebrities like Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber shared their wrinkly, grey-haired selfies on social media.”
根据第三段 “We view these images as inferred fiction, not realized and therefore unreal,” US author Nicci Gerrard told The New York Times. “We think of our younger selves, because in one sense that’s who we are. Our younger stories are all still part of us, while our older selves don’t yet exist.” 此外,Nicci Gerrard的这番话也是对本段的主题句“FaceApp helps us stop thinking of things that don’t matter and focus on the present.”
故选A项。

34. A。 A项与该段的主题句“It’s also true that too much use of mobile phones can make us cold and distant”(过度使用手机也会让我们变得冷漠和疏远)相呼应。此外,与上句“Our dependence on phones reduces our opportunities for face-to-face communication”(我们对手机的依赖减少了面对面交流的机会)构成逻辑上的承接关系。
