Nervous suspects(嫌疑犯) locked up in Britain's newest police station may feel relieved by a pleasant yellow colour on the door. If they are close to confessing a crime, the blue on the wall might tip the balance.
Gwent Police have abandoned colours such as greys and browns of the 20th-century police cell(牢房) and have used colour psychology to decorate them.
Ystrad Mynach station, which recently opened at a cost off5 million has four cells with glass doors for prisoners who suffer from claustrophobia(幽闭恐怖症), Designers have painted the frames yellow, which researchers say is a calming colour. Other cells contain a royal blue line because psychologists believe that the colour is likely to encourage truthfulness.
The station has 31 cells, including 12 with a"live scan" system for drunken or disturbed prisoners, which detects the rise and fall of their chest. An alarm alerts officers if a prisoner's breathing stops and carries on ringing until the door is opened.
Designers and psychologists have worked for years on colour. Blue is said to suggest trust, efficiency, duty, logic, coolness, thinking and calm. It also suggests coldness and unfriendliness. It is thought that strong blues will stimulate clear thought and lighter, soft colours will calm the mind and aid concentration.
Yellow is linked with confidence, self-respect and friendliness. Get the colour wrong and it could cause fear, depression and anxiety, but the right yellow can lift spirits and self-respect.
Ingrid Collins, a psychologist who specializes in the effects of colour, said that colour was an"energy force", She said: "Blue does enhance communication but I am not sure it would enhance truthful communication.”
Yellow, she said, affected the mind. Red on the other hand, should never be considered because it could increase aggression. Mrs Collins praised the designers for using colours in the cells. Gwent is not the first British force to experiment with colour to calm down or persuade prisoners to co-operate. In the 1990s Strathclyde Police used pink in cells based on research carried out by the US Navy.
4. The expression"tip the balance" in paragraph 1 probably indicates that the blue might_________.
A. let suspects keep their balance.
B. make suspects cold and unfriendly in law court.
C. help suspects to confess their crimes.
D. enable suspects to change their attitudes to colours.
5. Which of the following colours should not be used in cells according to the passage?
A. Pink. B. Red.
C. Blue. D. Yellow.
6. Which of the following helps alert officers if someone stops breathing?
A. Royal blue lines. B. Scanning equipment.
C. Glass doors. D. Yellow frames.
7. The passage is mainly concerned with__________.
A. the relationship between colours and psychology.
B. a comparison of different functions of colours.
C. scientific ways to help criminals reform themselves in prison.
D. the use of colours in cells to affect criminals psychology.
C 5. B 6. B 7. D

C
You eat food and drink water, right? Skipping Rocks Lab is changing how you and your future generations will have water. Have you ever thought you could eat water? Think again, this is actually happening somewhere in the world.
The group at Skipping Rocks Lab has made a water bottle you can eat. The product is called Ooho. Unlike plastic bottles, Oohos are neither tall nor hard. They look more like bubbles, or small, round, clear balls. They can hold liquid inside. People who drink Oohos can be surprised: the outside bursts in the mouth.
Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez is with Skipping Rocks Lab. He explains that the outside, or the membrane, of Ooho is made of seaweed, a plant that grows in the ocean. “It’s a membrane made of seaweed that can contain water or any kind of liquid. It’s made from an extract (汁) of the brown seaweed.”
The Ooho membrane is tasteless, and you can eat it. The company says even if you throw away the membrane, it will break down in about four weeks. Gonzalez says the membrane is strong, and good for the environment.
Every year, billions of plastic water bottles are thrown away, polluting land and waterways around the world. The typical water bottle made of plastic can take hundreds of years to degrade.
Lise Honsinger is also with Skipping Rocks Lab. “Most people just grab a bottle of water, hold it for five minutes, drink it, and throw it away. How can that then exist for 700 years? So, yeah, this is absolutely a solution to that. We are very purist: we don’t want to see this packaged in plastic.”
There are limits to the Ooho. It cannot be refilled. Each bottle is small. And Oohos do not store for more than a few days. The Skipping Rocks Lab is working on those issues. “We’re still working on things like extending the shelf life, looking at different options in terms of thickness, if we want to make one that stands up more, or more flexible for marathons where people just want to eat it whole.”
Right now, Skipping Rocks Lab can make only a few thousand Oohos a day. But it is developing new technology that could increase that number to hundreds of thousands.
I’m Caty Weaver. Kevin Enochs wrote this story. Anne Ball adapted it for Learning English. Kelly Jean Kelly was the editor.

A. Oohos can be stored over a long period
B. Oohos can degrade easily and quickly
C. Oohos may bring convenience to people
D. Oohos can help the world save water
9. What can we know about the Ooho membrane?
A. It can hold anything inside.
B. The shelf life of it is not long.
C. Its production is very low now.
D. It is environmentally friendly.
10. Where does this passage come from?
A. A news report. B. A speech draft.
C. A radio speech. D. A website.
11. What might be the best title?
A. Eating water — a long way to go B. Ooho — a useful product
C. New water bottles help fight pollution D. Ooho bursts in your mouth
B 9. D 10. C 11. C

The company says even if you throw away the membrane, it will break down in about four weeks.
The Ooho membrane is tasteless, and you can eat it. Gonzalez says the membrane is strong, and good for the environment.
I’m Caty Weaver. Kevin Enochs wrote this story. Anne Ball adapted it for Learning English. Kelly Jean Kelly was the editor.

D
A British friend told me he couldn’t understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds (嗑瓜子) as a snack so much. “I’ve met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth, I believe that’s from cracking the seeds,” he said.
I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I’m watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn’t like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one small seed.
When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometimes even neighbors would go door-to-door on Chinese New Year’s Eve to check out what every family was making.
I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. Out in the living room, a large table would already be laid out, complete with fancy tablecloth, ready-made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds. Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
I don’t think it’s right to criticize (批评) one’s choice in food or eating habits, no matter how strange they may seem.
It’s not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins your breath. They think it’s delicious, and it’s connected to their certain culture. I think it’s a wonderful tradition.
12. Why can the British friend not understand when he found Chinese love eating sunflower seeds?
A. Because the seeds are too hard to crack.
B. Because he thinks they are harmful to teeth.
C. Because he doesn’t think the seeds are worth eating.
D. Because he doesn’t think the seeds are good.
13. What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year?
A. The families get together for it. B. Children can eat delicious food on that day.
C. The traditions of celebrating it disappear. D. Eating sunflower seeds is related to it.
14. What’s the writer’s attitude to Denmark’s way of eating bread?
A. Uncaring. B. Negative. C. Understandable. D. Doubtful.
15. What idea does the writer want to express in this passage?
A. Eating habits come from a certain culture.
B. It is good to form healthy eating habits.
C. Changing your eating habits will change your life.
D. One kind of food doesn’t necessarily suit everyone.
C 13. D 14. C 15. A
根据第二段“My friend doesn’t like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one small seed.(我的朋友不喜欢葵花籽,对他来说,似乎没有必要为了得到一颗小种子而付出那么多的努力)”可知,作者的外国朋友认为葵花子不值得吃,所以当这位英国朋友发现中国人喜欢吃葵花籽时,他并不理解。
根据第四段中的“Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
故选A。
Gratitude is not only an art performed in daily life, but also part of our traditional virtue (美德). Has your mother or friend told you that you’re an ungrateful person? Do you feel unable to thank the world or people around you? Are you crazy for things you don’t have instead of being thankful for what you do have? ____16____, then you will definitely need to work on being a more grateful person.
Showing gratitude has been put forward in the last few decades. ____17____. But there are still some tips that help make it possible for you to practice gratitude.
Refusing to play the victim (受害者) is the first step you’re supposed to take. ____18____. If you want to be grateful, stop complaining to the world, your teachers, your friends and your family about not putting themselves in your shoes, and focus on how much they’ve helped and cared about you.
Volunteering in your community is another effective way to show how grateful you are for what the world has given you. Whether you’re helping clean up a local park, working in a soup kitchen, or teaching children or adults in your community to learn to read, your attitude towards life will change positively. ____19____.
____20____. You shouldn’t always be good only to your close friends or family members. You can help a neighbor look for a lost dog. You can also help an old lady carry her groceries. You don’t have to search for these opportunities purposely. Sometimes they will present themselves. So when they come, act with generosity. You’ll be more grateful for your role played in the world.
A. However hard you try to avoid these questions
B. If you find yourself involved in one of these situations
C. Gradually, you’ll be more grateful for the chances to repay the society
D. Doing a random act of kindness is also a great way of practicing gratitude
E. While such encouragement is morally meaningful, it seems to be a little abstract (抽象)
F. Ungrateful persons are always blaming the world for the problems and owing all the faults to others
G. When you reflect on your thoughts, feelings, emotions and actions, you are actually reflecting on your values
B 17. E 18. F 19. C 20. D
空前说“Has your mother or friend told you that you’re an ungrateful person? Do you feel unable to thank the world or people around you? Are you crazy for things you don’t have instead of being thankful for what you do have?(你的母亲或朋友说过你是一个忘恩负义的人吗?
根据前句“Showing gratitude has been put forward in the last few decades.(表达感激之情是在过去的几十年里被提出的。)”和后句“But there are still some tips that help make it possible for you to practice gratitude.(但仍然有一些建议可以帮助你练习感恩。)”
空后说“If you want to be grateful, stop complaining to the world, your teachers, your friends and your family about not putting themselves in your shoes, and focus on how much they’ve helped and cared about you.(如果你想心存感激,就不要再向这个世界、你的老师、你的朋友和你的家人抱怨没有设身处地为你着想,而要关注他们是如何帮助和关心你的。)”,这说明不懂得感恩的人会抱怨,把错误归咎于别人,F选项“Ungrateful persons are always blaming the world for the problems and owing all the faults to others(忘恩负义的人总是把问题归咎于世界,把所有的错误都归咎于别人)”说明了不懂得感恩的人会把问题归咎于他人,这和空后的“complaining”相一致,因此F选项承上启下,符合语境,故选F。
空前说“Whether you’re helping clean up a local park, working in a soup kitchen, or teaching children or adults in your community to learn to read, your attitude towards life will change positively.(无论你是在帮助清理当地的公园,在施粥所工作,还是在社区里教孩子或成人学习阅读,你对生活的态度都会积极地改变。)”,C选项“Gradually, you’ll be more grateful for the chances to repay the society(渐渐地,你会更感激有机会回报社会)”说明了在社区帮忙会带来的好的结果,因此C选项承接上文,符合语境,故选C。
对比前三段的第一句及后面的句子“You shouldn’t always be good only to your close friends or family members. You can help a neighbor look for a lost dog. You can also help an old lady carry her groceries. You don’t have to search for these opportunities purposely. Sometimes they will present themselves.(你不应该总是只对亲密的朋友或家人好。你可以帮助邻居寻找走失的狗。你也可以帮老太太拿杂货。你不必刻意去寻找这些机会。有时他们会自己出现。)”可知,做一个随意的善行也是一个练习感恩的好方法,D选项“Doing a random act of kindness is also a great way of practicing gratitude(做一些随机的善举也是练习感恩的好方法)”说明了要随机地做出善举,因此D选项可作为本段的主题句,故选D。
