I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment(成就).
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.
24. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A. His good grades got him a good job.
B. He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely.
C. His views on social values are well known.
D. He is content with his academic achievements.
25. Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship?
A. A helper. B. A judge. C. A monitor. D. A supporter.
26. What is the greatest accomplishment for the author?
A. The contribution to volunteering. B. The success in exams.
C. The recovery of confidence in life. D. The work in community service.
27. Why does the author want to major in social work at university?
A. To gain a well-paid job. B. To give his life a purpose.
C. To meet his grandparents’ expectations. D. To better help the disadvantaged.
C
Have you ever considered the way you spend your money? What do you buy? When do you buy? It is important to use your money wisely. Then, you will have enough for the things you want. You can make smart decisions about your money. All it takes is some careful, smart thinking.
One way to be smart with your money is to shop around before you buy. Visit more than one store, check the prices at each store, and try not to be in a hurry to buy. You don’t have to buy at the first store you visit; another store might have what you want at a lower price. You can even check online and compare prices.
Another way to be smart with your money is to wait for a sale. Many stores offer special discounts. For example, suppose you want to buy a camera. Wait until a store has a sale. You can save 20 percent, 30 percent, or more on the price of the camera by waiting for a sale. Some stores also offer a discount if you buy more than one of an item. So, look for sales offering a lower price per item if you buy two of that item. You could save money.
You can also use your money wisely by buying larger sizes of things. For example, large bags of dog food usually cost less per pound than small bags cost. A large pack of pens usually costs less per pen than a small pack of pens. So, even though you may spend more on a large size, you are really saving money per item.
You can learn to be smart with your money. It takes some practice, and it takes patience. You cannot always have what you want right away. But if you are patient, you will save money. Then, you will have more money to spend on what you want.
- Which is one way to save money?
A. By waiting for sales. B.By shopping at only one store.
C. By shopping in a hurry. D.By buying small packages of things.
29. What is the writer's opinion?
A. Being careful with money is wise. B. It is not important to save money.
C.Comparing prices takes careful thinking. D. It isn't a good idea to shop online.
30. Which word best describes the people who are smart with their money?
A. Mean. B. Patient. C. Wealthy. D. Lazy.
31. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To share a personal story. B. To explain how to do something.
C. To introduce the things on sale. D. To show how to get somewhere.
D
A new study, conducted by British company Mindlab International, has found that listening to music at work increases accuracy(准确性) and speed, The Telegraph reported. Perhaps, some parents disagree with this idea, saying, “Turn off the music and concentrate!” Well, if that's the case with your parents, you might now be able to convince (使相信) them that you have science on your side.
The company gave 26 participants (参赛者) a series of different tasks for five days in a row, including spell checking, mathematical word problems, data entry, and abstract reasoning. The participants completed these tasks while listening to music or no music at all.
The results showed that while music was playing, 88% of participants produced their most accurate test results and 81% completed their fastest work. David Lewis, chairman of Mindlab International, told The Telegraph, “Music is a very powerful management(管理) tool if you want to increase not only the efficiency(效率) of your workforce but also their emotional state...they are going to become more positive about the work.”
You may have a list of your favorite songs, but not all kinds of music match all homework. For maths or other subjects involving numbers or attention to detail, you should listen to classical music, the study found. In the study, pop music enabled participants to complete their tasks 58% faster than when listening to no music at all. If you're reviewing your English writing, pop music is the best choice, as it is the best kind for spell checking. It cut mistakes by 14%, compared to listening to no music. After finishing your homework, do you often take time to check your answers? Maybe some dance music is suitable for you.
- What did the participants have to do in the study?
A. Persuade their parents to listen to music.
B. Listen to the same music together.
C. Try their best to choose the most suitable music.
D. Finish tasks with music or without music at all.
33. What does the underlined word “they” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A. Tools. B. Results. C. Tests. D. Participants.
34. When you review your English writing, what kind of music is the best choice?
A. Classical music. B. Dance music.
C. Pop music. D. Rock music.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Music Helps Us to Learn B.We Cannot Live Without Music
C.Different Music, Different Lives D.Music in the Classroom

Some shy people find that they can talk fine with their old friends, but struggle with strangers. They want to “fit-in” with new people, but it’s really not easy for them. 36
Work on Raising Self-confidence
Having high self-confidence helps you to be outgoing because you get recognition from yourself. 37
Be in the Present Moment
Shy people spend too much time in their heads. 38 Being mindful of the present moment increases your social ability because you have “more to work with”. This improves your confidence, making you more likely to be outgoing.
Say No to Limiting Beliefs
Some people are so careful in conversations. They don’t want to say “wrong things”. They don’t like themselves around new people and can’t stand out because they’re afraid even to try. The real problem is that the feeling is based on complete false beliefs. 39 The point is that you’ll prove to yourself it’s OK to be not always right. That way you’ll feel free to be social with people.
Little by little you’ll get better. As you succeed, you’ll grow confident to be more outgoing, which will lead to more social success. 40
A. Then, you’re in a positive state of finding more friends.
B. So, plan to say something a little embarrassing about yourself in a conversation.
C. When you feel good about yourself, what others think of you doesn’t matter so much.
