Imagine this. There's an apple and a piece of cake on a table. Which one would you like ?The delicious cake or the healthy appleA bestseller, Willpower Rediscovering Our Greater Strength ,suggests that willpower (意志力) is the ability to make decisions that are better for us in the long term, rather than in
the short term.
Here is a famous experiment in the book:The Marshmallow Test.In 1972,Professor Walter Mischel tested the willpower of 600 four-year-olds to six-year-olds.In the experiment, each child was left alone in a room for fifteen minutes with a marshmallow (棉花软糖) on a table in front of them. They were given two choices: they could either eat it or,if they waited fifteen minutes, they'd be given a second one (and then they could eat both).
So, what did the kids doWell, as you can imagine,70% ate the first marshmallow within the fifteen minutes. But the other 30% showed willpower they controlled themselves and waited for the second marshmallow. But then Mischel discovered something really interesting. Twenty years later, he got in touch with the children, who, by then, were in their early twenties. And he found that those who'd shown strong willpower were getting better marks at university and were more popular.
Willpower is like a muscle (肌肉),and the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets. So,if you do daily"self- control exercisessuch as making your bed or brushing your teeth, you'll improve your overall willpower. And daily willpower exercises will help you with those bigger goals, such as studying for an exam or training for a marathon.
Becareful though. Just like any muscle, your "willpower muscle" can get tired. If you've had to do lots of things that require willpower, take a break or give yourself a treat.
That way, you'll build up your willpower again.
And one last thing, the writer mentions people who learn foreign languages usually
have a lot of willpower. So, congratulations!
43.How many children got two marshmallows in the Marshmallow Test in 1972?

C.young kids don't need to practice willpower like grown-ups

A few years ago, a friend sent me a restaurant gitt card for Christmas, and I picked a pretty, sunny Sunday afternoon to use it. It felt good taking my two grown sons and daughter to a nice sit-down restaurant instead of the fast food places we usually ate at. The meal was delicious, and we all had a good time just being together. The gift card covered almost all of the check(餐馆帐单). I reached into my wallet to get enough cash to cover the rest. I saw two bills(钞票 )in the front of it. The first would cover the rest of the check. The second would cover the check and give the waitress a nice tip. I reached down to pick out the first one.
At that moment, my mind flashed back to 30 years ago. I was working as a hushoy(餐厅勤杂工)in a restaurant much like the one we were in. It was long hours of hard work for low pay. I went home just barely(勉强 )making enough to feed my young family. I also remembered how more than once I saw the waitresses counting their small tips while worrying about how they were going to pay the rent and buy their kids the things they needed. I remembered the pain in their eyes and saw the sadness in their faces at the end of the day。
I blinked 眨眼睛)and was back in the present again, with my fingers touching the smaller bill in my wallet. I smiled, pushed it back down and picked out the larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. As we all got up from the table, I handed them to the hardworking waitress."You keep the change, "I said with a smile and a happy heart。
We are all one family in this world We live together, rejoice (高兴)together and suffer together. Do your best to be kind. Do your best to be a good person and replace the suffering with joy.

Everyone knows by now that plastic pollution for the environment.Beijing, forexample, has dealt with this by banning(禁止) thin plastic bag, plastic tableware(餐具) and otherplastic items in supermarkets, staurants and hotels since May 1, according to CGTN.

Scientists changed its genes(基因),allowing it to break down 90 percent of one ton of plastic in less than 10 hours.
"It had been completely forgotten, but it turned out to be the best.“said Professor Alain Marchief science officer at Carbios.
The enzyme especially breaks down PET, a type of plastic that is most commonly used to produceplastic bottles and food packaging(包装). It is the fifth most common type of plastic that we use.

plastic themselves -to develop their research and start using the enzyme on an industrial scale (范围),according to Forbes.

at the heart of Beijing today.
The Forbidden City is 600 years old. The third emperor(皇帝)of the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Yongle, built it from 1406 to 1420. Fourteen emperors of the Ming Dynasty and ten emperors of the Qing Dynasty lived and worked in it.
It took a lot of work to build the palace. About 1 million workers, including 100,000 artisans (工匠), took 14 years to build it. The materials came from all over the country. More than 100,000 pieces of nanmu, a very valuable kind of wood, were sent from Sichuan in China's far southwest. Fine gold leaf (金箔)came from Suzhou in Jiangsu province. Clay bricks were made in Shandong in the east.
There is also a 250 tone in the palace. It's the heaviest stone there. People found it in the countryside about 80 km west of Beijing. It was so heavy that people could only transport it during the winter. They poured water onto the road to make ice. Then a team of thousands moved the stone on the ice to bring it to the palace.
The proJect even changed the local landscape。 While building a moat(护城河) around the palace, workers dug up soil and piled it on a hill north of the Forbidden City. That's where Jingshan came from.

Huge squares, great buildings and countless treasures-the Forbidden City never fails to take its visitorst breathe away. It's the world’s largest palace. It lived through fires and wars. But it still
at the heart of Beijing today.
