While many people dream of mermaids (美人鱼), few people actually try to become one. How can someone become a mermaid if they don't exist? Just ask Dana Richardson, who is a professional mermaid in Hawaii!
“As a child, I always felt very connected to the ocean and played mermaids in the water,” says Dana. “My love of the ocean took me to different types of work such as a lifeguard, swim instructor, underwater photographer, boat captain, and surfer. I just decided to take it to the next level and grow a tail!”
Dana doesn't mean literally (照字面地). In 2008, she began making mermaid tails from materials including shiny fabric that she wears while free-diving in the waters around Kona, Hawaii. Free-diving means diving without any protective equipment. It requires you to hold your breath while swimming deep underwater. As she dives in, Dana not only looks like a mermaid; she experiences what it is like to swim like one too.
The waters around Dana's home in Kona are filled with wildlife, including dolphins and whales. Kona is by a sheltered sea where the waters are calm for swimming. For ten years Dana has been swimming with the creatures of Kona. Some of them have even learned to recognize her.
Dana knows how to swim with sea life because she is a trained marine (海洋的) naturalist. She understands the behavior of sea life and knows how to safely interact with it. Every morning when she swims with sea life she gets to experience her other “home.” “The ocean beneath the depths really is another world. Watching how the world works so gracefully in that circle of life underwater is a beautiful thing.”
For Dana Richardson being a mermaid just makes sense. “I've always felt more comfortable underwater than on land,” she says.
Would you like to follow your dream, even if it seems impossible? Dana reminds everyone, “One person can truly make a difference. By following your heart and offering the world your unique gifts, you will inspire others to do so. The world needs you!”
    24. What has been influencing Dana's work experience most?
    A. Her science teacher. B. Her family. C. Her hobby. D. Her swim instructor.
    25. Why does Dana make mermaid tails?
    A. She wants to swim like a mermaid. B. She needs them to protect her.
    C. She needs to make money with them. D. She wants to take photos of mermaids.
    26. Being a marine naturalist helps Dana _____.
    A. appreciate the beauty of other people B. discover her outstanding gifts
    C. get along well with sea life D. feel comfortable both underwater and on land
    27. Dana encourages people to _____.
    A. help those in need B. try to realize their dreams
    C. love marine animals D. protect the marine environment
    C
Teens want structure in their lives, which means they want their lives well-planned. To begin building structure, teens need love and trust. They need to know their parents are there to give them needed love and support (支持).Teens want to be sure that nothing can prevent parents from shouldering their responsibility for them — not their growing maturity (成熟),misbehavior, nor anger at something they have done. Teens want parents to keep control while allowing them to make some decisions.
There are some ways you can help your teens create reasonable structure and remain close. One way is to spend time together. Parents often mistake their teens' increased interest in friends for a disinterest in the family.
Teens would like to spend more time doing things with their parents, but watching TV is not counted as spending time together. As your teens mature, it is important for you and your teens spend time alone together, one to one. Your teens need time to talk to you alone without any other family member present.
Talk with your teens about their interests and concerns. Make sure you really show interest in what is happening. When talking with your teens, give full attention and do not stop them.
The way to help your teens become adults is to let your teens into your world. Sharing your emotions and concerns with your teens is important. Avoid causing needless worry.
Trust your teens. Don't expect the worst. Hope for the best. Telling your teens you don't like their friends will cause the teens not to bring their friends home. If something should go wrong, believe that your teens didn't do it on purpose.
It is very important that you treat your teens with respect. Teens need the same respect adults show for total strangers. Don't talk down to your teens.
You need to be supportive of your teens. What may be a small problem to you may be troubling to your teens. Teens don't have the experiences that adults have had. Let the teens know that you understand how much it hurts when something happens that is upsetting or hurtful to them. As they mature, they can look back at some problems they had and laugh at having been upset by something that now seems unimportant.
The most important things to remember are: talk with your teens, listen to their worries and offer suggestions when needed. This will help your teens to live a well-organized life.

When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden and carrying out the garbage. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier lives than those who had not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence (能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,” said George Vaillant, the psychologist who made the discovery.
Vaillant’s study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. The researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. Working----at any age----is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence---the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live magnificently(极好地) in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”
    32. What do we know about John?
    A. He had few childhood playmates. B. He enjoyed his job and marriage.
    C. He received little love from his family. D. He was envied by others in his childhood.
    33. Vaillant’s words in Paragraph 2 serve as _____.
    A. a description of personal values and social values
    B. an explanation why some boys grew into happy men
    C. an example for parents’ expectations of their children
    D. an analysis(分析) of how work was related to competence
    34. Vaillant’s team obtained their findings by _____.
    A. recording the boys’ effort in school B. examining the men’s mental health
    C. comparing different kinds of scores D. testing the men’s problem solving ability
    35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life.
    B. Competent adults know more about love than work.
    C. Love brings more joy to people than work does.
    D. Independence is the key to one’s success.
