    These days,North Kickapoo Street in Shawnee,Oklahoma,is a four-lane road leading out to the highway,and lined with all kinds of places to eat and shop.But in the mid-1950s,it was just a gravel(砂砾)country road,the perfect place for our daddies to teach us how to drive.

    The Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans has added an unconventional course to its curriculum.Medical students can now take cooking classes in addition to their usual training.This is intended to improve doctors’nutritional knowledge and encourage them to use food to prevent or cure illnesses.
    According to a survey,most medical students in the U.S.receive on average 20 hours of nutritional education throughout their entire education.This is an extremely low number,especially when one considers that diet is at the core(核心)of many modern Western diseases.From Type 2 diabetes,heart disease,reflux to obesity,allergies,depression and arthritis,eating the right foods can go a long way towards recovery,while significantly reducing dependency on medicinal drugs.
    A big part of the problem is that nutritional guidelines in North America are vague,impractical,and difficult to apply.Everyone,from doctors to schoolchildren,learns about specific nutrients and percentages of recommended daily intakes,but that doesn’t translate easily to the grocery store.
    Training doctors to cook,however,takes nutritional education to a whole new level.Not only will doctors be able to explain which foods are best to eat,but they will also understand how to prepare them.Tulane medical students prepare for teaching future patients by offering free cooking classes to New Orleans residents—a mutually beneficial arrangement for everyone who shares that food.

    Punks,Ravers,Mods and Teddy Boys.No,these aren’t some hot new bands,but the names of a number of British youth subcultures from the last 70 years.Youth Club,a UK not-for-profit organization,released a book earlier this year celebrating many different subcultures from throughout Britain’s recent history.

    “On both sides of the Atlantic,more and more young disappointed teenagers were looking for an escape from the boredom and restrictions of society,”wrote Ian Youngs,BBC entertainment reporter.“Unemployment,racial tensions and social changes added fuel to their fires.”
    Youth subcultures have almost disappeared in the West.Some experts believe the reason for this is the instant and low-priced availability of music and clothing in the Internet age.“Fashion and music,they’re much cheaper and they’re much faster today,”Ruth Adams,a culture lecturer at King’s College London told The Guardian.
    “When I was a teenager,you had to stick to one type of music or fashion,because it cost more money.Now,it's all a bit vaguer,”she said,believing that it's harder to figure out someone’s personality or music tastes nowadays just by looking at them.

    M: Hello, I heard from my friend that you carry hard-to-find books. He strongly recommended your bookstore for these books. Do you carry a copy of Secret signed by the author?
    W: Yes, I know the title, but only one is available now, and it’s not signed. If you need it soon, I recommend buying that. Otherwise, I can search online to find a signed copy. It could take some time, though, and of course, it will cost more.
    M: I understand that, but what really matters is the signature. I’m giving my father the book as a gift. He was a fan of the author’s.
    W: I see. If you give me your phone number, I’ll inform you when I find something.

    M: Hi, Grandma! I’m calling to say happy birthday. I hope you’re having a good day.
    W: Thank you, Michael! It’s great to hear from you. It’s been a while since we’ve talked.
    M: I know, Grandma. I’m sorry. I’ve been so busy with school and activities lately. I’m captain of the basketball team this year. And I’m also applying to colleges for next fall.
    W: Oh, Michael, I’m so proud of you! You’re a very accomplished young man. Do you know where you want to go to college?
    M: I really want to go to the University of Southern California, but they might not let me in! It’s a very good school, and it’s very difficult to be accepted there.
    W: Well, I’m sure they will take you, honey. You’re a special young man. You’ve really made your grandfather and me so proud.

    W: Okay, sir. I can do that. We’ll have to deliver it overnight, which will cost extra money. Let’s see…it will be $32.50 to get the package there tomorrow. Will you pay with a credit card or cash?
    M: I have cash. And please mark “FRAGILE” on the box.
    W: What is in here, sir? Is there anything dangerous? Any liquids or chemicals?
    M: No, there is just a box of chocolates and a cup. But I don’t want the cup to break.
    W: Okay, sir. We will have it leaving Atlanta and arriving in St. Louis tomorrow, by way of Memphis. Here’s your receipt, and have a great day!

    Have you heard of Jane Goodall? She is a famous scientist who lived with and studied chimpanzees for many years. A chimpanzee is an intelligent African animal that is like a large monkey without a tail. When Jane was young, her father gave her a toy chimpanzee. And she became interested in these animals. In 1957, her love for animals led her to call Dr. Louis Leakey, a famous scientist, who offered her a job as an assistant. Even though she had no college degree, he asked her to become a researcher. She lived with the chimpanzees for over thirty years and wrote down what they did. She published her research. Some people criticized her research. They said she should have given the chimpanzees numbers instead of names. After she left the jungle, she became interested in saving the environment. She opened the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 to educate people about the environment. She has written many books and still travels around the world, helping children understand the natural world. In 2002, she opened a Jane Goodall Institute in Hong Kong, China. Everywhere she goes, people ask her about her research on chimpanzees.
