    A

My mother has a dining table which sits right in the middle of her dining room. It was once buried beneath piles of papers——magazines, articles, copies of schedules for vacations she took back in the 1990s, and baby pictures of grand children who are now paying off their college loans.
My brother Ross and I recently flew to New York to visit my mother. Momwhy dont we go through all that stuff? Ross said. No. Dont touch it! my mother said. The next afternoon, when she couldn't find a bill she needed, Ross suggested it might be put somewhere in the dining room and that we find it together. Besides he said all those papers are clearly stressing you out. However, my mother just said, Are you boys hungry? And then she seemed to have lost herself in deep thought.
On our last night there, my mother walked up to us with a small pile of unopened mails, which she had collected at the western edge of the dining table, and said Help me go through these. SureI said. When we had succeeded in separating wheat from chaff (谷壳) , I asked Would you want to deal with another little pile of papers?
My mother led the way, walking into the dining room the way an animal manager might be while entering a cage with tigers in it. Ross and 1 came in behind her and suddenly he reached for a pile of the papers on one side of the table. No! my mother said sharply. Lets start at the other end. Thats where the older stuff is. Finallywe threw 95 percent of the stuff into paper shopping bags. Then I asked what she wanted us to do with them, and she surprised us all by saying, Put them in the incinerator (垃圾焚化炉).
When I returned home, inspired by the visit to my mother, I sorted out my own accumulated (积累的) piles of papers, sold or gave away half of my possessions, and moved into a smaller house. It seems that my life has been cheaper and easier since then. And it proves that a small change does make a big difference.
    1. What did the mother ask her children to do with these unopened mails?
    A. To burn them.
    B. To read them for her.
    C. To collect them together.
    D. To pick out the important ones among them.

    B

I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heart breaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.

I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl (猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.

I examined the chick (雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.

The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.

Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.

A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all-LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

5 What is unavoidable in the author's rescue work according to paragraph 1?

    A. Efforts made in vain. B. Getting injured in his work.

    C. Feeling uncertain about his future. D. Creatures forced out of their homes.

6.Why was the author called to Muttontown?

    A. To rescue a woman. B.To take care of a woman.

C.To look at a baby owl. D.To cure a young owl.

7.What made the chick calm down?

    A.A new nest. B.Some food. C.A recording. D.Its parents.

8.How would the author feel about the outcome of the event?

    A.It's unexpected. B.It's beautiful. C.It's humorous. D.It's discouraging.

Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country's economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination(目的地)country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance the well being(health and happiness)of local inhabitants.

Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country's economy can suffer.

On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads, and other support facilities(设施)needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel will lose money.

Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers(阴沟)to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

12.Which of the following has most probably been discussed in the paragraph that goes before the passage?

A.It is extremely important to develop tourism.  B.Building roads and hotel is essential.

C.Support facilities are highly necessary. D.Planning is of great importance to tourism

13.Too much tourism can cause all these problems EXCEPT ______.

A.a bad impact on other industries B.a change of tourists' customs

C.overcrowdedness of places of interest D.pressure on traffic

14.Not enough tourism can lead to ______.

A.an increase of unemployment B.a decrease in tourist attractions

C.the higher cost of support facilities D.a rise in price and a fall in pay

15.It is good for local people to be well aware that tourism will ________.

A.use up a large amount of water B.weaken their economy

C.help establish their traditions D.help improve their life
