Christmas came early this year for the children living in these low-income neighborhoods in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
That's because a former resident(居民)of the area returned to the streets where he grew up so he could hand out more than $ 12,000 worth of toys to the local children earlier this week.
Adam Armstrong grew up poor in Harrisonburg. When he was just 18 years old, he was sent to prison to serve a three-month sentence for breaking the law. By the time he was set free, he knew that it was time to turn his life around.
Armstrong, who is now the father of a three-year-old girl, ended up moving to Baltimore and doing different jobs until he finally got into the international business. As Armstrong became more and more economically comfortable, he felt more and more eager to help people living in poverty, so he began donating(捐赠)toys to local neighborhood every holiday season.
This week, the 35-year-old man drove to his former neighborhood in a 26-foot moving truck packed with 1,327 toys to give away to all of the children. Sara Lewis Weeks, an old neighbor there, said that when Armstrong spoke to her about the gifts last week, she was not sure of his plan. To her surprise, however, Armstrong made good on his promise. "It wasn't like simple animal toys-he was giving away bikes, self-controlled cars, real Barbie dolls-not Dollar Store Barbie dolls,“ said Lewis Weeks. "He didn't miss anybody. His heart was truly in this. ”
Armstrong simply told The Washington Post that he was happy to bring joy to little kids for the holiday season.
"The kids were so pure and sweet,“ Armstrong said. "You can't put a price on looking at these kids' happy faces. Some of them have nothing, and to be able to give them a small toy. . . the reward and the pleasure was mine. ”

Food brings us together and connects us to our families, friends, nature and to foreign cultures. Food is universal. Food waste, on the other hand, has become a universal problem, as it significantly contributes to climate change. Luckily, there are countries that have laws to require supermarkets or other businesses to donate unsold food.
About one third of all food grown for human consumption is thrown out or wasted according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This creates both environmental and financial problems, since traditional agriculture requires large amounts of resources including land and water. Food production is also a major cause of greenhouse gases and climate change.
Food waste occurs at every step of food production from the field to the store. In fact, fruits, vegetables, and roots have the highest waste. Donating food that is unusually wasted does not mean giving away damaged food. Sometimes it is simply a case of food being mislabeled(贴错标签),a can that has a torn label, or slightly bruised(碰伤)fruit.
To reduce both the financial and environmental pressure, Italy passed a law to encourage businesses and farmers to donate unsold food to charities. Companies that donate their leftovers will pay lower taxes(税)on waste removal.
Waste management is also a very costly thing for governments. In fact, according to Global Citizen, in 2016, Italy spent over $13. 3 billion on waste management. The idea behind the law is that when it is economic and convenient, companies will happily follow the law.
France was the first country to pass a food donation law in 2016. It required supermarkets that are at least 4,300 square feet to donate unsold food to charity. Since then, 90 percent of supermarkets began donating food, the number of which was 66 percent before the law.
To increase food donations, Israel passed a law in 2018 to ensure that unused food from restaurants, hotels and other places goes to the people that need it most.
28. What does paragraph 2 focus on?
A. FAO's guidelines. B. Human eating diets.
C. Global climate change. D. Food waste problems.
29. What is most likely to be given away according to the law?
A. Heavily broken canned food. B. Unhealthy vegetables.
C. Slightly bruised fruit. D. Damaged food.
30. What benefit will the Italian government get from the law?
A. It will sell donated food to make money.
B. It will ask companies to pay higher taxes.
C. It will save money on waste management.
D. It will attract more international companies.
31. What is known about the food donation law?
A. It seems difficult to pass in Israel. B. It takes effect gradually in France.
C. It is just applied in supermarkets. D. It is an unsuccessful try in France.

What does being happy have to do with luck? To answer the question, a team of researchers from the UK and Hong Kong gave surveys to 844 English-speaking university students in Hong Kong. The survey questions measured their thoughts about luck and their happiness levels.
The researchers observed that less happy people believed in external(外在的)luck-the “Good luck with that!” variety that controls our good or bad. The authors point out that blaming “luck” for events and experiences makes people lose personal self-determination, which diminishes their sense of purpose and, in turn, their happiness. Believing we need luck to be successful may make us less determined to reach goals and take risks.
On the other hand, happier people believed themselves to be personally lucky. Viewing yourself as lucky, the researchers suggest, shows an active and positive attitude that develops hope and self-acceptance. Personally lucky people may feel more confident to try new things or act in ways that help others.
How does luck influence those people? Next, the research team asked those people to fill another survey. They found that people who believed in external luck were more likely to be less active, and in turn were less happy. Those who believe they're especially lucky suffer less of a hit to happiness.
This study has its value. However, the data all come from surveys filled out by those surveyed, which means the responses may be too personal. Moreover, the use of a one-time survey means we cannot say that one thing causes another.
Although there are some limits, this study stresses the value of thinking about luck as something that benefits us. Moreover, this study helps explain why we call people “happy go lucky“---because happy is how we feel when we focus on how personally lucky we are.
32. What does the underlined word “diminishes" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Explains. B. Reduces. C. Develops. D. Balances.
33. What can we know about personally lucky people?
A. They are always helped by others. B. They have a preference for the past.
C. They have confidence in themselves. D. They like changing their own goals.
34. What does the author think of the study?
A. Its findings are unreliable. B. It has space for improvement.
C. It is actually of little value. D. Its research method is perfect.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Connection Between Happiness and Luck
B. Being Happy Has Nothing to Do With Luck
C. How Less Happy People Can Become Luckier
D. The Latest Study on People's Happiness Levels

"Fooles Holy Day”. It is certain that the celebration became popular through Great Britain in the 18th. In Scotland, the tradition became a two-day event. As time went on and the celebration became more widespread, it became a one-day holiday.

Every day Oscar would do everything his way. Oscar would eat what he wanted, play the games he wanted whenever he liked and sleep whenever he wanted. If his mother asked him to clean up himself or to come down for dinner, he would shout “later!” and continue with whatever he was doing.
One day, Oscar came home late from school after playing out with his best friends in the park. He went off to do the next thing that was on his daily list. He caught an armful of snacks from the cupboard and then played video games until the sun had set.
“Oscar!” his mother shouted from the kitchen. He didn't respond. "Guys come over here!” he shouted at the screen. "Oscar!” his mother repeated. She had shouted louder this time, and she sounded a little tired. "Yeah?!” Oscar picked off his headset(耳机)."Dinner's ready!” Oscar rolled his eyes as he fast had his headset back on and settled himself on the sofa. "Later!” he called back.
A few minutes later, Oscar's mother walked into his room. She carried a plate of food for his dinner. She stopped suddenly just inside the door. "Oscar, can you please clean up this mess?” The more Oscar had eaten, the more pieces had fallen around him. He was surrounded by leftover packages and empty ones collected on the sofa.
Oscar stared at his mother. "Later!” he shouted, over the noise of the video game. His mother let out a sigh(叹气)as she began to clean up the mess.
The next day, it's Thursday. Oscar came home angry and frustrated because he had struggled with a test at school. He decided to treat himself to some cake. Just as Oscar was about to take the first bite, his mother called him from the other room.
He sighed, carried his cake and stepped off to talk to his mother. She looked angry, and a letter was in her hand. "Oscar, we need to talk about something that happened in school. ” She pointed for him to sit next to her. "I've read this letter from your teacher. She says you've been cheating on your tests. ” Oscar grew angry all of a sudden. He only copied because he didn't understand any of it.
His mother sighed as well but then gave him a small smile. "It's OK, Oscar. Look, if you're struggling, I can help. Let's start tonight, OK?” “Later!” he cried. He ran off to his bedroom and had a sleep.
