I sat down on a chair and noticed the ladder lying on the ground under the big tree beside the driveway. It didn’t take Sherlock Holmes to figure out Jason was up in that tree and had accidentally kicked the ladder away. He wasn’t about to come down, and he wouldn’t let me know he was trapped. I could put up the ladder and rescue him, but then I recalled an event in my youth that I now, more than 50 years later, suddenly understood.Raymond Cutting was a white haired gentleman, who entered my life when I was Jason’s age. My parents said I was free to wander around the village except for the abandoned quarry(采石场)at the foot of a local mountain, but it was an interesting place: full of milky green water and rusty machinery hiding in the bushes. One afternoon I went there with some older boys, who later abandoned me when the sun was low. I tried for an hour to find my way, climbing over fallen trees but got caught in the bushes. Panicked, I cried.Stopping to catch my breath, I heard someone whistle. “Hello,”said Cutting. “Out for a walk?” I nodded, “I’ve just been out exploring the old quarry, but I’ve got to get home now.” “If you’d wait a minute, I’ll walk back to town with you after I finish this willow whistle.”So we walked back down the path together, and the willow whistle was mine, sounding loud and clear. It suddenly dawned on me what an unusual act of kindness that was---Mr. Cutting had heard me crying, but he didn’t play the role of a rescuer. Instead, he whistled so that I could find him.I got up from the chair and drove my truck right under the big tree, where Jason was. I picked up the ladder and carried it around to the back of the house. When I returned, Jason was sitting in my chair.“Where have you been?” I asked.“Exploring,” Jason said. “I am a Cub Scout, you know.”“Yes,” I smiled and said, “I know.”24. What. do we know about the ten-year-old author and Jason?A. Neither of them admitted being trapped. B. Neither of them were fond of exploring.C. They both got stuck in the woods. D. They both cried out for help.25. What was Mr. Cutting’s kind act to the author?A. He offered to walk the author home.B. He helped the author without hurting his pride.C. He punished the boys who left the author behind.D. He gave the author his handmade willow whistle.26. How did the author help his grandson get down the tree?A. He placed his chair by the tree. B. He parked the truck under the tree.C. He put the ladder up against the tree. D. He climbed onto the tree to catch him.27. What can we learn from the story?A. Like father, like son.B. Once bitten, twice shy.C. God helps those who help themselves. D. Have considerations for others while offering help.CAnyone who commutes(通勤)by car knows that traffic jams are an unavoidable part of life. But humans are not alone in facing potential backups.Ants also commute---between their nest and sources of food. The survival of their colonies depends on doing this efficiently. When humans commute, there’s a point at which cars become dense(稠密)enough to slow down the flow of traffic, causing jams. Motsch, a mathematician in Arizona State University, and his colleagues wanted to know if ants on the move could also get stuck. So they regulated traffic density by constructing bridges of various widths between a colony of Argentine ants and a source of food. Then they waited and watched. “The goal was to try to find out at what point they are going to have a traffic jam.” said Sebastien Motsch. But it appears that that never happened. They always managed to avoid traffic jams. The flow of ants did increase at the beginning as ants started to fill the bridge and then levelled off at high densities. But it never slowed down or stopped, even when the bridge was nearly filled with ants. The researchers then took a closer look, at how the behavior of individual ants impacted traffic as a whole. And they found that when ants sense overcrowding, they adjust their speeds and avoid entering high-density areas, which prevents jams. These behaviors may be promoted by pheromones, chemicals that tell other ants where a trail is. The ants also manage to avoid colliding(碰撞)with each other at high densities, which could really slow them down. The study is in the journal eLife. Can ants help us solve our own traffic problems? Not likely, says Motsch. That’s because when it comes to getting from point A to point B as fast as possible, human drivers put their own goals first. Individual ants have to be more cooperative in order to feed the colony. But the research could be useful in improving traffic flow for self-driving cars, which can be designed to be less like selfish humans — and more like ants.28. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 2 refer to?A. Surviving. B. Avoiding jams. C. Finding food. D. Commuting.29. How did the researchers control the traffic density of the commuting ants?A. By controlling the widths of their path.B. Through closer observation.C. By finding out the dense points.D. By regulating their numbers.30. According to the research, ants can avoid traffic jams mainly because_____________.A. they follow a special routeB. they level off at high densitiesC. they depend on their natural chemicals to adjust their speedsD. they never stop or slow down on the way31. What is the best title of the passage?A. Traffic Jams B. Unavoidable? Not for Ants!C. Survival of an Ant Colony D. Kennedy’s speech in 1962. 36 While SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets have been significant technological achievements, SpaceX’s engineers have started to turn their attention toward the B.F.R., a much more ambitious vehicle that SpaceX hopes will take Mr. Maezawa to circle the moon. It is a promising project at SpaceX, and is one that would grow rapidly in the coming several years. 37 Although he would not discuss how much Mr. Maezawa is to pay for his trip, SpaceX’s CEO Mr. Musk made clear it would make a significant contribution to the development costs. 38 “I don’t think it’s more than 10, and I don’t think it’s less than two,” he said.Mr. Maezawa said he did not like to be alone and so he would invite five to eight artists and performers to accompany him, part of a project he called Dear Moon. 39 “Art makes people smile, brings people together.” He said. When asked whether a trip around the moon was the most beneficial way to spend his fortune, Mr. Maezawa said, “I want to contribute to society in a different way. Maybe 10 years from now, people will be laughing I paid so much, but somebody needs to make the first payment,” he added. “Otherwise, space development is not going to evolve. 40 ”That’s why I think I should be the one to do this.Mr. Musk estimated development costs at roughly $5 billion.Mr. Maezawa’s trip to the moon was expected to last 5 days or so.Mr. Maezawa also said that art contributed to his hope of world peace.Mr. Maezawa’s four to five-day moon trip would probably occur in 2023.Only together with the financial help from all the artists, can humans realize the dream of flying to the moon.He announced his intentions to travel to space with an unconventional crew during a news conference Monday evening. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B.
