My career enabled me t wrk frm hme. I culd wrk frm hme, and becme a fster(领养) mther, prviding safety fr a child wh needed it desperately.
On Mnday mrning, I picked up the phne and dialed the number I had ggled fr the nearest Department f Children's Services. The man n the ther end was receptive t my questins and explained the next step f training, invlving eight weeks f classes designed t prepare and educate fster parents. We cntinued thrugh all the classes, the hme visits, backgrund checks, and seemingly endless steps.
Five lng mnths after we were apprved, the phne rang. In the middle f the night, I wke my husband and rushed t East Tennessee Children's Hspital. The kakap, a bird that lives in New Zealand,is nt designed fr survival. Weighing up t 4 kilgrams, it is the wrld's fattest parrt. It mates(交配) nly when the rimu tree is in fruit, which happens every few years. It develped gradually in the absence f land-based natural enemies, s instead f flying abve the trees it walks like a duck acrss the dry frest flr. When it mves unsteadily acrss smething that might kill it, it will stand still.
Such unusual characteristics turned it int fast fd fr human settlers, and fr the cats and rats they brught with them. It seemed t have disappeared by the 1970s, until scientists came acrss tw undiscvered ppulatins in the cuntry's suth. These survivrs were eventually mved t small enemy-free islands, where researchers have spent decades trying t get them t breed(繁殖).
The scientists' patience is finally rewarded. The rimu was in fruit this year, and mre than 80 chicks hatched, making this the best breeding seasn n recrd. Many have survived int adlescence, increasing the number f adult kakaps by a third, t 200 birds.
Anther danger t the kakap is a lack f genetic diversity. This is ne reasn why fewer than half f kakap egg hatch. By arranging the genme(基因组) f every living bird, scientists can identify clsely –related individuals and put them n different islands. Every bird is fitted with smething t track its slightest mvement. If a female mates with an “unsuitable” male, the prcess can be stpped.
All these effrts cst almst New Zealand $1.3 millin this breeding seasn. Yet the kakap's future still lks unsafe. Earlier this year a severe disease tre thrugh the ppulatin. And tiny as the number f kakaps is, space is running ut n the tw islands where mst f them live. New enemy-free settlement must sn be fund.

C. It adapts slwly in genetic develpment. D. It can't respnd actively when facing danger.

A. They hatched 80 kakaps' eggs this year.
B. They tried t make the rimu tree in fruit this year.
C. Tw survivrs were mved t enemy-free islands.
D.50 chicks hatched have survived int adults this year.
10. Why did the scientists put kakap in different islands?
A. T stp clsely-related kakaps mating. B. T increase the ppulatin f kakap.
C. T stp females mating with males. D. T hatch mre kakaps' eggs.
11. Accrding t the authr, the effrts t prtect the kakap in New Zealand are

"New and imprved." These wrds are put in s many marketing campaigns that we tend t accept them as linked. But many new drugs aren't an imprvement ver the best existing drug fr a given cnditin, and the fast drug-apprval prcesses in recent years have added t the uncertainty abut their advantages.
A recent reprt in the British Medical Jurnal, "New Drugs: Where Did We G Wrng and What Can We D Better?," analysed the issue. The authrs lked at 216 drugs apprved between 2011 and 2017; 152 were newly develped, and 64 were existing medicine apprved fr new uses. Only 25% ffered a majr advantage ver the established treatment, and fully 58% had n cnfirmed added benefit t reduce symptms r imprve health-related quality f life.
"This desn't mean there's n added benefit," lead authr Wieseler said. “It just means we have n psitive prf. Either we have n studies r have studies nt gd enugh.” Wieseler and her c-authrs wrk fr a German institute which evaluates new treatments and advises n whether the cuntry's health care system shuld pay a premium(补贴) fr them. Such rganizatins, knwn as health technlgy assessment (HTA) agencies, wrk a little differently in the US, says Sean Tunis, a researcher in Baltimre: “If payers think a new drug isn't better than an existing drug, these agencies will require that hspitals try the cheaper drug first.”
Germany's HTA demands trials t prve that a new treatment beats the existing standard. This isn't always practical. Fr ne thing, such studies can be expensive and time-cnsuming, with n guarantee f success. Secndly, it can discurage cmpanies frm attempting t develp new alternatives. This is already happening. Drug develpers are increasingly fcused n areas where there are n gd treatments t cmpete with, such as rare diseases.
This lack f meaningful data t guide patients is a majr pint f Wieseler's paper. With accelerated apprval, there are mre prducts apprved, with a greater amunt f uncertainty abut risks and benefits. But there are ther slutins besides drug trials. One idea is t require pstmarket studies t track the effectiveness f newly apprved drugs- a step t ften neglected.
12. What message des the recent reprt cnvey?
A. Imprved drugs have advantages ver ld nes.
B. The apprval prcesses fr new drugs are t fast.
C. Many new drugs have n imprved advantages.
D. Befre 2017 n imprvement was made t drugs.
13. What will US HTA agencies d when n advantage is fund in new drugs?
A. Get hspitals t use the cheaper drugs. B. Remve gvernment premium n them.
C. Arrange financial supprt fr the patients. D. Put new drugs n further trials and studies.
14. What's the disadvantage f Germany's HTA trial demands?
A. Making drug cmpanies think f illegal ways t cut cst.
B. Hlding cmpanies back frm imprving existing drugs.
C. Getting patients t depend n the gvernment fr supprt.
D. Pushing cmpanies t try alternatives fr existing drugs.
15. What is the best title fr the text?
A. The Advantage f Existing Drugs B. Misunderstanding f New and Old Drugs
C. Peple's Preference fr New r Old Drugs D. A Dilemma with New Drug Alternatives
