Yu need nly lk at a prfessinal cyclist t appreciate the ptential effects f cycling n the bdy. But what abut the mind? It's a questin that has lng challenged anyne wh has wndered hw riding a bike can ffer what feels clse t a state f emptying yur mind.
Dr, Jhn Ratey believes cycling increases "the chemistry in yur brain that makes yu feel calm/* and that carrying ut multiple peratins while cycling can be an effective treatment. As was shwn in a German study invlving 115 children, half f them did cycling that invlved cmplex mvements, while the rest perfrmed mre straightfrward exercises with the same aerbic (有氧的) demands. Bth grups did well in cncentratin tests, but the "cmplex" grup did a lt better.
There have been ther interesting findings t* In 2013, Dr. Jay Alberts rde a tandem bicycle, a bicycle built fr tw riders sitting ne behind the ther, acrss the American state f Ohi with a friend wh has Parkinsn's disease, a cnditin effecting the nervus system. The idea was t raise awareness f the disease, but t' the surprise f bth riders, the patient shwed significant imprvements. Dr. Jay Alberts then scanned the brains f 26 Parkinsn's patients during and after an eight-week exercise prgramme using bikes. Half the patients were allwed t ride at their wn paces, while the thers were pushed harder. All patients imprved, and the grup which was pushed harder shwed particularly significant increases in cnnectivity between areas f intelligence respnsible fr functins such as walking and picking things up.
We dn't knw hw this happens, but there is mre evidence f the link between Parkinsn and cycling. A vide n the Internet shws a 58-year-ld man with severe Parkinsn's. At first, we watch the patient trying t walk. He can barely stand and his hands shake uncntrllably. Then we see the man n a bicycle being supprted by thers. With a push, he's ff, cycling past cars with perfect balance. Dctrs dn't fully understand this discrepancy either, but say that cycling may act as sme srt f actin that helped the patient's brain.
The science f cycling is incmplete, but perhaps the mst remarkable thing fr the everyday rider is that it can require n cnscius fcus at all). The mindlessness f cycling can nt nly make us happier, but als leave rm fr ther thughts. On the seat f my bike, I've slved prblems at wrk and made life decisins, as, I'm sure, have cuntless thers.

Terrible wrking cnditins have a lng traditin. Early industry was marked by its dirty,
dangerus factries. In the early 20th century wrkers were frced int dull, repetitive tasks by the needs f the prductin line. Hwever, in a service-based ecnmy, it makes sense that fcusing n wrker mrale might be a much, mre fruitful apprach.
Prving this is mre difficult. But that is the aim f a new study targeting wrkers at British Telecm. Three academics— Clement f Erasmus University, Rtterdam^ f Oxfrd and Gerge Ward f the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy-surveyed 1,800 sales wrkers at 11 British call centres. All each emplyee had t d was click n a simple emji each week t indicate their level f happiness. Thse wrkers were charged with selling custmers bradband, telephne and televisin deals. In ttal the authrs cllected adequate respnses frm 1,161 peple ver a six -mnth perid.
The results were striking. Wrkers made 13% mre sales in weeks when they were happy than when they were unhappy. This was nt because they were wrking lnger hurs; in happy weeks, they made mre calls per hur and were mre efficient at turning thse calls int sales* The tricky part, hwever, is determining the directin f causatin (因果关系).Wrkers may be happier when they are selling mre because they expect a bigger bnus.
The academics tried a clever way t get rund this causatin prblem by examining a very British issue-the weather. Wrkers turned ut t be less happy n days when the weather in their lcal area was bad and this unhappiness cnverted int lwer sales. Since they were making natinal calls, nt lcal nes, it is unlikely that custmer unhappiness with the weather was driving the sales numbers. S it was wrker md driving sales, nt the ther way rund.
Even if this reasning prves t be crrect, businesses may nt find it f cmfrt. The academics pint ut that "what we are nt able t d is making an fficial decisin as t whether investing in imprving emplyee happiness makes gd business sense". It is pssible that the csts f such investment might utweigh any gains in prductivity.
Mre research is clearly needed. But there is evidence that happier wrkers are: gd news fr sharehlders (持股人),as well as prductivity. Analysts fund the firms where wrkers gave the best reviews easily utperfrmed thse where emplyees gave a thumbs dwn.
32.Accrding t the passage, wrker mrale means.
A.enthusiasm and cheerfulness
B.cmpanins and clleagues
C.cmpetence and prductivity
D.incme and welfare
33.What is the majr aim f the study mentined in paragraph 2?
A.T analyze the pssible factrs that affect wrk efficiency and achievement.
B.T test the level f satisfactin f the wrkers in British sales industry.
C.T examine the relatinship between happiness and prductivity f wrkers.
D.T prve that peple's attitude tward life affects their wrk perfrmance.
34.The academics examined the weather t prve.
A.sales decline culd have been driven by bad weather
B.wrkers suffer md swings due t weather change
C.custmer unhappiness may result in pr sales numbers
D.sales perfrmance is influenced by wrkers* md
35.Frm the passage, we can learn that.
A. cmpanies shuld try every means t enhance emplyee happiness
B. emplyees need t have the chance t rate the cmpanies they wrk fr
C. the wrkers' happiness is clsely related t a cmpany's prductivity
D. wrking cnditins may have a great impact n wrk perfrmance
