I believe my life was saved because of Beethoven's Moonlight奏鸣曲)being put in a video game. To be clearer, I was a terrible kid, living in the mean streets of Philadelphia, where I frequently got involved with street gangs(街头混混)and did horrible things I regret today. I was failing out of high school and had no future prospects(前途).The only music type I listened to at the time was rap and R&B, but classical music never crossed my ear.

I remember playing a game one day, and in order to get to the next part of the game, the lead character, "Jill", has to discover a page or two of sheet music for the piano in order to open a secret passage to progress through the game. Once obtained, the game fades out and pops out a new scene where Jill plays the piano. Being in complete awe, I had no idea what these feelings were and admittedly didn't want it to stop. 20 seconds or so later, the short clip of music stopped and my face was wet from tears that dripped from my eyes. I didn't know what was going on and was severely confused. All I knew was that I had to replay that scene over and over again, not knowing who Beethoven was or that it was a much longer and satisfying piece.

My last year of high school, I wasn't expected to graduate but I had the opportunity to select a music elective(选修课程).It was then that I realized that classical music chose me and that I had the gift for transferring emotion through classical composition. Everything became so much clearer and for some reason higher learning other subjects, including physics and chemistry, became interesting and easy. It was as if my brain had been turned on and I began to appreciate everything and everyone around me. Without classical music, I would be like 90% of my friends back in Philadelphia, or a non-productive member of society. Classical music saved my life.

    1. Which word can best describe the author's childhood?

    A. Awful. B. Common. C. Wealthy. D. Inspiring.

    1.    On what condition will Jill play the piano?

    2.     Finding one or two pages of sheet music.
    3.     Listening to the music for 20 seconds.
    4.     Setting up a new scene for the next player.
    1.    What changed the author's life?

    A. His strong brainpower. B. His last year in high school.

    C. His appreciation for Beethoven. D. His encounter with classical music.

    1.    Which can be the best title of the passage?
    1.     Where There Is Love, There Is Music
    2.     Music, the Second Language of Human Being
    3.     Happy, You Listen to Music; Sad, You Understand It

Masks that helped save lives during the CO VID-19 are proving a deadly threat to wildlife.

Macaques(帰猴)have been spotted chewing the straps off old and tossed-aside masks in the hills outside Malaysia5s capital Kuala Lumpura potential choking threat to the small monkeys. And in an incident that captured headlines in Britain, a gull (海鸥)was rescued by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(RSPCA) in the city of Chelmsford after its legs became tangled(缠绕)in the straps of a disposable(一次,性的)mask for up to a week. The animal welfare charity was alerted after the bird was spotted, motionless("动不动 的)but still alive, and they took it to a wildlife hospital for treatment before its release.

The biggest impact may be in the water, with green groups alarmed at the flood of used masks, latex(乳胶)gloves and other protective gear finding their way into already polluted seas and rivers. Conservationists in Brazil found one inside the stomach of a penguin after its body was washed up on a beach, while a dead pufferfish was discovered caught inside another off the coast of Miami.

French campaigners Operation Mer Propre found a dead crab trapped in a mask in a saltwater lake near the Mediterranean in September.

Masks and gloves are wparticularly problematic" for sea creatures 9 says George Leonard, chief scientist from US-based NGO Ocean Conservancy. "When those plastics break down in the environment, they form smaller and smaller particles. Those particles then enter the food chain and impact the entire ecosystems," he added.

There has been a shift towards greater use of reusable cloth masks, but many are still choosing the lighter single-use varieties. Campaigners have urged people to throw them away properly and cut the straps to reduce the risk of animals becoming trapped, OceansAsia has also called on governments to increase fines for littering and encourage the use of washable masks.

    1.    What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
    1.     Serious incidents of wildlife hunting.
    2.     Scientific research into wildlife living habits.
    3.     How wildlife is affected by disposable masks.
    4.     How human beings protect endangered wildlife.
    1.    How do masks endanger sea animals?
    1.     Sea animals may get twisted by masks.
    2.     Sea animals can't find their way home.
    3.     Sea animals have difficulty in finding food.
    4.     Sea animals are forced to leave their habitats.

    2.    Getting rid of used masks properly.
    3.    Giving mask producers heavy fines.
    4.    Reducing the risk of washable masks.
    1. In which section of the newspaper can this passage be found?

    A. Business. B. Education. C. Lifestyle. D. Environment.

A competition making up Versailles literature was launched on social media recently. So what is Versailles literature?

Actually» the term has nothing to do with the French palace, nor with literature. It came from The Rose of Versailles, a Japanese manga series about aristocratic (贵族的)life at the palace of Versailles in France in the late 18th century, and was coined by a Chinese influencer earlier this year. Known as humblebragging, it is a boast(夸耀)disguised as a complaint. “I have too many houses. How can I decide which one to decorate?” and "I thought I lost weight this morning. So disappointed when I realized it was because I took off the huge diamond ring my boyfriend gave me last night." are some examples of Versailles literature. The intention is to show offusually things of materialistic values, yet one ought to pretend that's not the point.

As the 19th-century English author Jane Austen famously wrote, a Nothing is more deceitful(欺诈的)than the appearance of humility(谦逊)The psychology behind humblebragging is to be recognized for one's successes and be liked by others at the same time, according to scholars. In her article titled "Why do people hate humblebragging?" published in Psychology Today, psychologist Dr. Susan Krauss Whitbourne noted that humblebragging is a "strategy in pursuit of respect,, because it draws attention to one's accomplishments in a circuitous way.

However, studies on social media users show that humblebragging as a self-promotion strategy does not work. In the essay Humblebragging: A distinct and ineffective selfpresentation strategy", the University of North Carolina researcher Ovul Sezer and Harvard University scholars Francesca Gino and Michael Norton concluded from their research that humblebraggers are perceived more negatively than straight braggers due to the former's insincerity. "The critical factor differentiating the two groups of people is sincerity. People don't like braggers, but they at least see them as more sincere than humblebraggers, said Francesca Gino.

So, how can we annoy humblebraggers back? "Just pretend you don't get whatever they try to show off," a netizen advised, " And respond with genuine sympathy for their complaints."

    1. Which of the following statements is typical of aVersailles literature”?
    1.    You know who my father is? My father is Li Gang.
    2.    Got five offers to date. I'm at a loss which to choose.
    3.    It5s a headache how to make my son tidy up his room regularly.
    4.    I'm fed up with living in the countryside with no shopping malls around.
    1.   What is the psychology behind humblebragging?

    A. To win others' sympathy. B. To earn others5 admiration.

    C. To show his/her sincerity. D. To mask his/her complaint.

    1.   What does the underlined word "circuitous" in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A. Roundabout. B. Straightforward. C. Ambiguous. D. Double-edged.

    1.    What can't be inferred from the passage?
    1.     Braggers are relatively more sincere than humblebraggers.
    2.     Humblebragging is an artificial appearance of being humble.
    3.     To respond with real sympathy will discourage humblebraggers.
    4.     If you want to be perceived positively? try using Versailles literature.

    Block out distractions.

39 It's easy to become distracted by the news or your favorite celebrity gossip site. Stay focused, and avoid social media tools when you need to concentrate on your studies.

    Get a good night's sleep.

Sleep is essential to resting your body and keeping your mind fresh for the next day.

Scientists from NASA have confirmed that asteroids(小行星)will not be a danger to Earth for the next 100 years. This is good news for anyone 61 (worry) about the end of the world. NASA has been monitoring an asteroid called Apophis for 17 years. They 62 (discover) the 335-metre space rock in 2004.
