17-year-old Dasia Taylor was named one of the 40 finalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), the nation’s most famous Science and math competition for high school seniors.
Dasia’s sutures (缝合线) work by changing color if the patients’ pH level changes, indicating an infection. pH is one of the most common parts of wound healing, Dasia said. It changes very quickly, so it’s one of the fastest ways to recognize infection.
So, she started experimenting with root vegetables. “I found that beet changed color at the perfect pH point,” says Taylor. “That’s perfect for an infected wound. And so, I was like, ‘Oh, okay. So beet(甜菜) is where it’s at’.” Beet provided the perfect dye for her invention, changing from bright red to dark purple when a surgical wound becomes infected. After more than a year of research, Taylor is working on getting her sutures patented.
She imagines these sutures being used in developing countries where they can save lives and money. “The goal of my project is to reduce the number of deadly surgical site infections in developing countries because developing countries suffer from the most number of deaths due to surgical site infections,” she said. “I was like there is no way that that should be happening. The equity part of my brain and all the work that I do around equity was like ‘That shouldn’t be happening. They should have the resources to save their citizens in their country.’ So, my goal is to work on that and make sure that it can actually discover those types of infections and stuff.” After graduation, Dasia hopes to attend Howard University, study political science and finally become a lawyer.
    24. How can a patient quickly know if a wound is infected?
    A. By observing the pH test paper. B. Through the doctors’ examination.
    C. By looking at sutures’ color changing. D. By observing how the wound changes.
    25. What did Dasia discover in her experiment?
    A. Beet has the same pH level. B. Beet can change color at different times.
    C. Beet therapy is good for wound healing. D. Beet can be used to help her with the invention.
    26. What can we learn about Dasia?
    A. She has won the invention patent.
    B. She became the winner of the Regeneron STS.
    C. She made contributions to surgical infection recognition.
    D. She helped save lots of lives and money in developing countries.
    27. What will Dasia’s future career probably involve?
    A. Medical and health work. B. Medical device development.
    C. Something about the legal aid. D. Medical and science research.
    C
Apples have always played a significant yet diverse role in history. Today apples continue to astonish in medicine, with headlines reporting that an apple a day really does have health benefits. In 2013, researchers in Oxford suggested that prescribing (开处方) either an apple a day or a statin (a drug used to lower cholesterol (胆固醇)) seemed to be equally successful at preventing heart attacks and strokes in people over the age of 50.
EPIC study, one of the biggest studies of its kind, involves half a million people and looks at the effects of eating fruit and vegetables on disease. Participants consuming at least eight portions a day had an astonishing 22% lower risk of heart disease, and risks of some cancers were slightly reduced. However, other cancers were unaffected, and there was no real effect on diabetes.
How might the humble apple be declaring war on heart disease and cancer, two of our biggest killers? The answer might lie in polyphenols (多酚) in apples, which is useful for protecting the fruit from disease and also giving it color and flavor. They are known to have strong antioxidant (抗氧化剂), and may also protect by reducing blood stickiness and cholesterol levels.
Several studies also show a reduction in blood pressure when more fruit and vegetables are eaten. Furthermore, apples contain a fibre called pectin (果胶) which sticks to cholesterol and glucose (葡萄糖) in the gut (肠道), slowing their absorption. What is clear is that the apple is a complex mix of components, working together for the good of our health. Trying to make do with antioxidant vitamin tablets just isn’t good enough, as shown by scientists in the Heart Protection Study.
But can we eat enough apples a day to keep the doctor away? Eating too many may not be a good idea, especially with a risk of lasting exposure to low levels of pesticide. Some people are even allergic to apples, and they can wear away outer layer of tooth. The Department of Health’s advice to consume ‘5-a-day’ (including both fruit and vegetables) might be a realistic starting point.
    28. Which of the following do the researchers most probably agree with?
    A. People suffering strokes can be cured by eating apples.
    B. Apples can replace medicine in some cases.
    C. Eating apples works well on all participants.
    D. Apples have been changing our life.
    29. Why are polyphenols and pectin mentioned in the text?
    A. To provide examples. B. To give advice on health.
    C. To clarify how apples work. D. To tell what apples contain.
    30. What can be inferred from the text?
    A. An apple a day isn’t a cure-all.
    B. Apples are not easy to digest.
    C. Apples have limited benefits for young people.
    D. Apples have better effects on keeping fit than vegetables.
    31. Where is the text most likely from?
    A. A nursing paper. B. A biology textbook.
    C. A diet brochure. D. A science magazine.
    D
Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center mapped brain changes after a year of aerobic(有氧的) workouts and uncovered a potentially significant process: Exercise increases blood flow into two key areas of the brain associated with memory.
The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, showed this blood flow can help even older people with memory issues improve cognition, a finding that could guide future Alzheimer's disease research, according to UT Southwestern Medical Center.
In the study researchers followed 30 participants who were 60 or older and had memory problems. Half experienced a year of aerobic exercise while the other half did stretches. "We've shown that even when your memory starts to fade, you can still do something about it by adding aerobic exercise to your lifestyle," said Binu Thomas, a senior research scientist of UT Southwestern Medical Center who led the study. "The aerobic exercise group showed a 47% improvement in some memory scores after a year; the other group showed slight change. Brain imaging of the aerobic exercise group, taken while at rest at the beginning and end of the study, showed increased blood flew into the specific brain areas that played important roles in memory function."
Many teams across the world are trying to determine if aerobic exercise might fight memory loss. Evidence is growing that it could at least play a small role in delaying or reducing the risk of Alzheimer's disease. For example, a 2018 study showed that people with lower fitness levels experienced faster retrogression of vital nerve fibers in the brain called white matter related to memory.
"Blood flow in the brain connected with memory improvement is still a part of the puzzle, and we need to continue piecing it together," Thomas says. "But we've seen enough date to know that starting a fitness program can have lifelong benefits for our brains as well as our hearts."
    32. What is the study mainly about?
    A. Old people have memory issues. B. Exercise improves memory.
    C. Aerobic workouts benefit mental health. D. Alzheimer's disease can be cured.
    33. What happened to participants after one-year aerobic exercise?
    A. Earlier memories were refreshed. B. Memory scores showed very small change.
    C. Brain imaging remained the same. D. More blood flew into memory-related areas.
    34. What does the underlined word “retrogression” mean in the fourth paragraph?
    A. Growth. B. Recovery. C. Decline. D. Extension.
    35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. Further research work requires doing. B. More people experience memory loss.
    C. Mystery of brain blood flow has been solved. D. Signs of memory loss can be discovered earlier.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Reading is essential but how can one choose the right books to read and where can one find them? A few famous people may give you some helpful tips.
    Read books from past eras.
36 Otherwise, you'd be "completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of your times," just as Alert Einstein put it. "Somebody who reads only newspapers and books of contemporary authors looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who dislikes eyeglasses," he said.
    37
Reading too wide a variety in too short a time would keep the teachings from leaving a lasting impression on you. Seneca the Younger, a first-century Roman philosopher, suggested that "you must linger (流连) among a limited number of master thinkers, and digest their works, if you would obtain ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind."
    Shop at secondhand bookstores.
Virginia Woolf believed the works in secondhand bookstores have an attraction which the usual volumes of the library lack. Browsing through these books gives you the chance to run into something that wouldn't have risen to the attention of librarians and booksellers. 38
    Check out authors' reading lists.
In his 1940 guide How to Read a Book, American philosopher Mortimer J. Adler talked about low to choose books. He attached importance to those that other authors consider worth reading.
39 Mortimer wrote that "one way to understand them is to read the books they read."
Make the final decision by yourself.
40 It's you yourself who should choose what, how and when to read. Theodore Roosevelt recommended choosing books on subjects that interest you and letting your mood guide you to your next great read.
    A. Interest is the best teacher.
    B. Great authors are great readers.
    C. Leave some room for older works.
    D. Learn more about those great authors.
    E. Don't jump too quickly from book to book.
    F. There's no "best books" list that everyone should follow.
    G. Usually they are much more selective in organizing their collections than secondhand book owners.

My teenage son, Jordan, always complained about having to be home earlier than all his friends. He would tell me that he was already seventeen, but still had a curfew(宵禁). He believed he was practically an adult. I pointed out that he was not an adult as he was still in high school.
“You don’t trust me!”  he yelled. Before I continued, he rolled his eyes, slammed the door and walked away. I sighed. How could I make Jordan see that I only wanted to keep him safe?
I decided to go for a walk, hoping the December air would clear my head. I opened the front door and nearly stepped on her: a small black cat, just like a meatball. “Hi, Meatball,” I said, bringing her into my arms. I walked back in, touching her neck gently. Meatball seemed happy enough to come in the house, but after an hour or two, she sat by the door, meowing to go back outside.
“Why won’t she just stay in with us all the time?” Nathan, my youngest son asked.
I explained to him that she was happy here but she liked being able to come and go as she pleased.
“That must be nice,” Jordan muttered from the other room, complaining why the cat, not him, could come and go. He even asked me to give Meatball a curfew.
    Meatball became a regular.
One night, temperatures were unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside.
I shook my head at her, afraid that she might freeze to death. She stared at me and meowed again. I patted her head, “I know you’re not happy, but it’s for your own good.”
“Mom’s not being mean to you,” Nathan told the cat. “She’s just trying to keep you from turning into a frozen meatball.” We both laughed at his joke.
The next morning, I couldn’t find Meatball. I asked the kids if anyone had seen her.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:Jordan nodded, “ I let her out last night.”____________________________________________________

    Dear David,
I’m thrilled to know you’re learning Chinese! It’s normal to feel a bit anxious at first, but it
will soon pass. Here are some suggestions.
First, read aloud little poems. Chinese is a beautiful language, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy its
rhyme and rhythm. Second, try to communicate often. You may find a Chinese friend with similar
interests. That way, you will feel more relaxed and comfortable. Last, use websites of Chinese media,
China Daily or CGTN, for example, where you’ll find sufficient quality learning resources. By
immerging yourself in it, you’ll soon have a deeper insight and eventually be eager to learn more.
The Great Wall was not built in one day. I’m sure your constant efforts will be rewarded. Go
    for it, David! (125 words)
    Yours sincerely, Li hua

it is advisable that you regularly watch some Chinese learning programmes, which will expose you
to an authentic learning atmosphere and will help you develop a better understanding of Chinese
