21.(6分)    More students than ever before are taking a gap year (间隔年) before going to university. It used to be called the “year off” between school and university. The gap-year phenomenon originated (起源) with the months left over to Oxbridge applicants between entrance exams in November and the start of the next academic year.

This year, 25,310 students who have accepted places in higher education institutions have put off their entry until next year, according to statistics on university entrance provided by the University and College Admissions Service (UCAS).

That is a record 14.7% increase in the number of students taking a gap year. Tony Higgins from UCAS said that the statistics are good news for everyone in higher education. “Students who take a well-planned year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete, their chosen course. Students who take a gap year are often more mature and responsible.” he said.

But not everyone is happy. Owain James, the president of the National Union of Students (NUS), argued that the increase is evidence of student hardship—young people are being forced into earning money before finishing their education. “New students are now aware that they are likely to leave university up to £ 15,000 in debt. It is not surprising that more and more students are taking a gap year to earn money to support their study for the degree. NUS statistics show that over 40% of students are forced to work during term time and the figure increases to 90% during vacation periods,” he said.

1What do we learn about the gap year from the text?

AIt is flexible in length. BIt is a time for relaxation.

CIt is increasingly popular. DIt is required by universities.

2According to Tony Higgins, students taking a gap year       .

Aare better prepared for college studies

Bknow a lot more about their future jobs

Care more likely to leave university in debt

Dhave a better chance to enter top universities

3How does Owain James feel about the gap-year phenomenon?

    AHe’s puzzled. BHe’s worried.

    CHe’s surprised. DHe’s annoyed.

4What would most students do on their vacation according to NUS statistics?

AAttend additional courses. BMake plans for the new term.

CEarn money for their education. DPrepare for their graduate studies.

    22.(8分)Climbing Without Ropes

The popular image of the mountain climber is of a person carefully climbing a steep cliff with a network of safety ropes, but it is not the only kind. Many climbers now enjoy bouldering. It’s more accessible and better for the environment.

    What is bouldering?

Bouldering is a sport that involves climbing on, over, and around boulders up to approximately twenty feet above the ground. Participants employ no safety ropes.

Here is an example of a climber addressing a bouldering problem.

Figure 1: The climber has two routes she could take, one to the left and one to the right. The left one appears easier because it has a jug within easy reach, but look what happens if she chooses that direction. She gets stuck on the rock and has to go back down. Sometimes that is even difficult than going up.

Figure 2: The climber takes the one to the right this time. using a foothold and placing her right hand in a crimp, she is able to life herself up and locate other handholds. After only a few moves, she is able to throw her leg over the top of the boulder and pull herself up.

"What's going on with you and your friend J. ”J. is the leader of a group of third-graders at her camp-a position Lucy herself occupied the previous summer? Now. she's the one on the outs and every day at snack timeshe tells me all about itwhile I offer the unhelpful advice all summer long.

“She's fond of giving orders," Lucy complained. "She's turning everyone against me. She's mean. And she's fat. "“Excuse me”I saidstruggling for calm. "What did you just say” “She's fat. ”Lucy mumbled(含糊地说). ”We're going upstairs” I saidmy voice cold. "We're going to discuss this. "And up we went. I'd spent the nine years since her birth getting ready for this daythe day we'd have the conversation about this horrible word. I knew exactly what to say to the girl on the receiving end of the teasing(取笑),but in all of my imaginings(想象的情况),it never once occurred to me that my daughter would be the one who used the F word-Fat.

My daughter sat on her bedand I sat beside her. "How would you feel if someone made fun of you for something that wasn't your fault” I began. "She could stop eating so much" Lucy mumbledmouthing the simple advice a thousand doctors have given overweight women for years.

“it's not always that easy”I said. "Everyone's different in terms of how they treat food.” Lucy looked at mewaiting for me to go on. I opened my mouthand then closed it. Should I tell her thatin teasing a woman's weightshe's joined the long tradition of criticsShould I tell her I didn't cry when someone posted my picture and commented"I'm sorrybut aren't authors who write books marketed to young women supposed to be pretty

Does she need to knownowthat life isn't fairI feel her eyes on mewaiting for an answer I don't have. Words are my tools. Stories are my job. It's possible she'll remember what I say foreverand I have no idea what to say.

So I tell her the only thing I can come up with that is absolutely true. I say to my daughter, “I love youand there is nothing you could ever do to make me not love you. But I'm disappointed in you right now. There are plenty of reasons for not liking someone. What she looks like isn't one of them. ”

Lucy nodstears on her cheeks. "I won't say that again"she tells meand I pull her closepressing my nose against her hair. As we sit there togetherI pray for her to be smart and strong. I pray for her to find friendswork she lovesa partner who loves her. And stillalwaysI pray that she will never struggle as I've struggledthat weight will never be her cross to bear. 24.(8分)After I visited my elder sister’s house, I was reminded just how different the apartment living with a child was. She has a nice big house with a few floors, a big backyard and lots of toys. Her house is my son Tom’s little piece of heaven. At her house there are little toys, big toys, a doll house, a play house and more! There are bedroom stocked with train tables, ride-on toys and big trucks.

The main difference about being an apartment mom is that you cannot become a collector of “things”. I continually get rid of anything too large. When Tom was born, we made a rule that there would never be any stuffed animals in our apartment that were larger than him at that time. We also made a rule that we would only ever have at most five stuffed “anything” at one time. So far this had worked out well for us. These rules left Tom with a few special soft creatures to play with, but that can be easily put away.

Since we want to keep the appearance of being clean city dwellers, we have limited Tom’s play things to one toy basket in the main living space and one big storage bin in his bedroom. I am constantly thinking about living space when I buy anything for our little Tom. We love the storage bin in Tom’s room. It is filled with fun play things. It is a place to keep his toys and everything gets pulled in and out daily. Anything that doesn’t fit is often weeded out to create space.

Tom absolutely likes going to his aunt’s house and pulling out every single toy available to him. Of course, Tom does not notice that when he returns home he only gets one basket of toys instead of many rooms of toys. Right now Tom lives fully in his 1,100-square-foot apartment and seems very satisfied with his basket of toys.

1By Paragraph 1 the writer mainly wants to tell us that her sister ________.

Aloves buying toys for herself    Bhas several children

Clives in a house with many toys    Ddoesn’t keep her house tidy

2What does the underlined part “weekend out” in paragraph 3 mean?

    Aremoved    Bwashed

    Cstored    Dplayed

3The last paragraph shows that ________.

Athe writer wants to live in a big house

BTom doesn’t like the toys in his toy basket

CTom doesn’t like the toys in his aunt’s house

Dthe writer’s rules about toys work out very wel

25.(10分)    The Broadcom MASTERS competition aims to find a balance between celebrating individual accomplishments and acknowledging that science seldom happens alone. The competition takes off when students from around the country are teamed up and have to solve a series of hands—on challenges in the spotlight.

Nowadayskids are fed with“the myth of the lone scientist”so placing such challenges in the middle school period has a huge potential for impact. The focus on teambuilding skills gets students excited before more fears and stereotypes(成见)set in.

The initial pool of qualified students comes from the participants in nation-wide science fairs. Those who score in the top 10(about 1 0000 kids)have the qualification to apply. The judges select the top 300 young scientistsand that group is finally narrowed to 30 finalists.

Selection at this stage is clearly an honor in itselfbut it counts as step one for the finalists. They are then flown to WashingtonDCand placed into teams of five for the hands-on part of the competition. Each team is made up of students with different talents and skillsincluding academic focus and experience.

Unlike the science fairswhere most of the work takes place behind the scenes and students share a polished outcomethe hands-on challenges create a space where the work is the competition itself. The students take up a range of challenges in sciencetechnologyengineeringmath and so on.Each of the challenges will need the insight and skills of multiple team members.

Judges observing the challenges aren’t just looking for outcomes but also for leadershipteamwork and problem solving.

The Broadcom MASTERS attracts increasing numbers of passionate and talented young people who are eager to take part in a program that helps them grow as scientistsengineers and inventors. It lets the students experience a sense of coming together with true peers.More importantlyit provides them with new skills to tackle future challenges.

1What does the Broadcom MASTERS competition mainly focus on?

    AIndividual accomplishments. BHands-on challenges.

    CAcademic performance. DTeam work.

2What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?

AA large number of kids take part in the science fairs.

BIt’s not easy to be qualified as a member of the finalists.

CThe judges are too strict with the participants.

DThe nation-wide science fairs are well organized.

3What can we infer from the text?

AThe Broadcom MASTERS competition has an increasing impact.

BMiddle school students prefer to challenge each other.

CStudents can learn more new skills from the Broadcom MASTERS.

DThe science fairs will be completely replaced by the Broadcom MASTERS.

Can Indoor Plants Really Purify the Air?

Plants are very important to human life. Through photosynthesis (光合作用), they transform carbon dioxide into fresh oxygen. They 1(assume) to remove toxins from the air we breathe—but is this true?

One famous NASA experiment, published in 1989, has found indoor plants can clean the air by removing pollutants 2(cause) cancer. Later research has found soil micro-organisms in the potted plant also 3(play) a part in cleaning indoor air.

Based on this research, some scientists say house plants are effective natural air purifiers, and the bigger and leafier the plant, the better. The amount of leaf surface area influences the rate of air purification. 4, however, say the evidence that plants can effectively accomplish this feat (功绩) is far from conclusive.

“There are no definitive studies to show that having indoor plants can significantly increase the air quality in your home,” 5Luz Claudio, a professor of environmental medicine and public health. “There’s no question 6plants are capable of removing volatile (易挥发的) chemical toxins from the air under laboratory conditions,” says Claudio. But in your home or office space, the notion that putting a few plants together can purify your air doesn’t have much hard science 7(back) it up.

Most research efforts to date, including the NASA study, placed indoor plants in small, 8(seal) environments to assess how much air-purifying power they have. “But those studies aren’t really applicable to what happens in a house. In many cases, the air in your home completely turns over—that is, exchanges places with outdoor air—once every hour. In most instances, air exchange with the outside has a 9(great) effect on indoor air quality than plants.” says Stanley Kays, a professor of horticulture (园艺学).

Disappointed 10many people may be by what Kays said, the professor also made it clear that he believes house plants are beneficial. Studies have shown plants can knock out stress and make people feel happier. More research shows spending time around nature has a positive effect on a person’s mood and energy levels.
