Having worked with ACE(African Conservation Experience) before. I knew that I had their complete support throughout my trip.
At the airport I was introduced to other volunteers who would be travelling to Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary with me. Upon arrival at the local town of Care for Wild, Nelspruit, we were met by a worker and we quickly got a sense of the importance of the project we were attending.
My first proper day at the project. Just wow. To feed a rhino baby. To approach (接近) them with their cute mouths open wide in preparation for their milk. The heartwarming moment was bittersweet though, as I remembered the reason these sweet babies were here… their mothers were killed. Hearing the stories that resulted with each beautiful baby arriving at the project was heartbreaking. I put all my heart into the work at this project.
Every day at the project was full of hard work. If you think it’s all about getting to cuddle (搂抱) and play with a baby rhino, that thought is wide of the mark as it’s not the purpose of this project. Preparing milk feeds. Bush walks. Night rides. The anti-poaching(反盗猎) dog unit training and the mounted unit checkups. But all the hard work was so worth it to see the babies running around or rolling in the mud(泥浆).
If you are considering volunteering at Care for Wild, do it. Yes, it is hard work. Yes, you will be tired. But trust me when I say it is all so worth it. I have left with a great amount of love for this animal and I will continue to be a supporter of their care and protection. I hope that one day, rhinos will be able to live in the wild freely. Until then, it is up to us to continue to work hard towards it. What are you waiting for?
    4. Why did the author go to Nelspruit?
    A. To have an adventure. B. To get to know ACE further.
    C. To do research on wild animals. D. To help with wildlife protection.
    5. How did the author feel during her first day at Care for Wild?
    A. Amazed but sad. B. Bored and lonely.
    C. Nervous but lucky. D. Proud and relaxed.
    6. What does the underlined part“wide of the mark”in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Creative. B. Comforting. C. Wrong. D. Unproven.
    7. What does the author want to do in the last paragraph?
    A. Describe life at Care for Wild.
    B. Call for people to stop poaching.
    C. Give an introduction to Care for Wild.
    D. Advise readers to volunteer at Care for Wild.
D 5. A 6. C 7. D

根据第三段“The heartwarming moment was bittersweet though, as I remembered the reason these sweet babies were here… their mothers were killed. 故选A项。
根据第四段第二句“If you think it’s all about getting to cuddle (搂抱) and play with a baby rhino, that thought is wide of the mark as it’s not the purpose of this project.
根据最后一段第一句“If you are considering volunteering at Care for Wild, do it.(如果你考虑在野生关爱组织做志愿者,那就去做吧。)”;最后一句“What are you waiting for?

Tuesday’s rain hit parts of Texas that Hurricane Harvey had already damaged almost two years ago. Hurricane Harvey in August, 2017 was the second most costly hurricane in US history. It caused $125 billion worth of damage in Texas. In the Houston area, 36 people died and about 150,000 homes were flooded.
A spokesman for the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said that this week’s rain “is not in any way a Harvey-level event”.
But the worst may not be over yet People will have a break from the heavy rain on Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service, the Texas Gulf Coast will continue to experience heavy rain later in the week.“Today should be our quietest over the next few days for rainfall,”said Don Oettinger, a National Weather Service meteorologist
Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peia warned,“As there is too much water on the ground and flash floods are likely to happen, we hope people are careful of what they’re doing and encourage them to stay home. There’s no sense in putting yourself, firefighters or anybody in danger needlessly.”
    8. What are Paragraphs 1 and 2 mainly about?

根据第一段“A storm hit Houston, Texas, on Tuesday. It brought heavy rains and rising floodwaters. By Tuesday night, some parts of the city had received 10 inches of rain. Police and firefighters helped people move to safe places. They also saved people from cars and buses that were stuck on roads. ,以及第二段第二句“Cars could not pass through any of the area’s main roadways.
根据第三段最后两句“Hurricane Harvey in August, 2017 was the second most costly hurricane in US history. It caused $125 billion worth of damage in Texas. In the Houston area, 36 people died and about 150,000 homes were flooded. 可知,席卷德克萨斯州的哈维飓风造成了巨大的财产损失和人员伤亡,与B项“It did a lot of damage to Texas.
根据第六段“According to the National Weather Service, the Texas Gulf Coast will continue to experience heavy rain later in the week. ‘Today should be our quietest over the next few days for rainfall,’ said Don Oettinger, a National Weather Service meteorologist
根据最后一段Samuel所说的话“As there is too much water on the ground and flash floods are likely to happen, we hope people are careful of what they’re doing and encourage them to stay home. There’s no sense in putting yourself, firefighters or anybody in danger needlessly. 故选A项。
    D
Wikipedia (维基百科) started in 2001 and has quickly gone from having just a few pages to having millions of pages with all kinds of information. It is even an ad-free website as it receives money from donations (捐赠).
Wikipedia is one of the most useful sites for students across the world. But because Wikipedia allows the public to freely edit (编辑) pages, should teachers allow their students to use the site to help them with their studies?
History teacher Luca Signore said, “I think it has good information and it is great for a starting point as you can quickly find information. I use it myself. However, it still gets edited by people who are not experts. You have no way of knowing whether something is completely true for certain.”
Students agree that Wikipedia may be the easiest site to get information from and it is especially helpful in history classes. Junior Alison Snyder believes, “You can use it for general background information, but as much as I’d like to, we shouldn’t be able to cite (引用) Wikipedia.”
Teachers should be able to allow students to use the site on a regular basis as the site is an amazing tool for students to quickly and easily get information for a class. However, it is clear that students shouldn’t be allowed to cite sources as some of the information might be a little bit incorrect.
Junior Maxine Moss agrees. “Yes, students should be able to use it on a regular basis because it is probably the easiest site to find information, but it is hard to tell if certain things are totally true.”
It is agreed that students should be allowed to use the website to get information as pages are, for the most part, fairly correct. However, citing items is a totally different story as the pages used on Wikipedia could have incorrect information and there are so many other sources out there with similar information from experts on certain subject matters.
    12. What is good about Wikipedia according to Paragraph 1?
    A. it can be freely edited. B. It was created by teachers.
    C. It has no advertisements. D. It provides free information.
    13. What do we know about Luca Signore?
    A. He seldom uses Wikipedia.
    B. He is against people editing Wikipedia.
    C. He doesn’t allow his students to use Wikipedia.
    D. He believes Wikipedia should be used in certain ways.
    14. How does Maxine Moss agree with Alison Snyder?
    A. Wikipedia is full of little mistakes.
    B. Wikipedia is more trouble than help.
    C. Wikipedia is helpful to some degree.
    D. Wikipedia is not proper for students.
15 What does the author think of citing information on Wikipedia?
    A. It is risky. B. It is boring.
    C. It is a wise choice. D. It is OK for beginners.
C 13. D 14. C 15. A
根据第一段“Wikipedia (维基百科) started in 2001 and has quickly gone from having just a few pages to having millions of pages with all kinds of information. It is even an ad-free website as it receives money from donations (捐赠).
根据第二段“But because Wikipedia allows the public to freely edit (编辑) pages, should teachers allow their students to use the site to help them with their studies? )”,以及第三段“History teacher Luca Signore said, ‘I think it has good information and it is great for a starting point as you can quickly find information. I use it myself. However, it still gets edited by people who are not experts. You have no way of knowing whether something is completely true for certain.’
第四段第二句“Junior Alison Snyder believes, ‘You can use it for general background information, but as much as I’d like to, we shouldn’t be able to cite (引用) Wikipedia.’ ‘Yes, students should be able to use it on a regular basis because it is probably the easiest site to find information, but it is hard to tell if certain things are totally true.’
根据最后一段的第二句“However, citing items is a totally different story as the pages used on Wikipedia could have incorrect information and there are so many other sources out there with similar information from experts on certain subject matters. 故选A项。
Over the past ten months of pandemic life, cooking has become a shelter for me. New York Times food editor Sam Sifton referred to Korean fried rice and said it "improves moods, atmospheres and weeks alike". ____16____ I'd argue it improves physical health, finances and skills, and reduces stress. Really, cooking is a rewarding thing you should do these days.
Cooking food for yourself is beneficial to your physical health. When you cook your own food, you control exactly what goes into your body. It's the best possible way to “dial in” or clean up your diet. ____17____ A recent survey has found that twice as many Americans are cooking at home than a year ago, and that nearly a quarter are doing so in an effort to eat healthier.
____18____ It's considerably cheaper than ordering from restaurants, or buying prepared food from supermarkets. It's found that ordering takeout is five times more expensive. The difference is more obvious if you’re cooking for a family.
In terms of improving cooking skill, you can't help but improve if you do it over and over again. With so many other outlets for hobbies shut down right now, why not view your kitchen as a mini universe to be explored? You've got the tools, not to mention the human requirement to eat. I can't think of another hobby where your body physically requires you to practice several times daily. ____19____
How does cooking relieve stress, you might be wondering? ____20____ If you're organized enough to cook meals in advance, you end the weeknight dilemma of “what's for dinner?”. Furthermore, as you get better at cooking, you will spare the need to order food.
    A. Cooking helps kids develop many hobbies.
    B. Actually, cooking can bring more benefits.
    C. The act itself can be calming to some people.
    D. From a financial aspect, cooking cannot be beaten.
    E. You can save money as well as improve your mental health.
    F. If improving health is your main reason for cooking, you're not alone.
    G. You're likely to improve your cooking skills and they will stick with you for life.
B 17. F 18. D 19. G 20. C
下文“I'd argue it improves physical health, finances and skills, and reduces stress.( 我认为它可以改善身体健康,财政和技能,减少压力)”,B选项“事实上,烹饪可以带来更多的好处”中的关键词“benefits”与下文意思相符,说明此处想要表示烹饪有很多的好处。故选B。
下文“A recent survey has found that twice as many Americans are cooking at home than a year ago, and that nearly a quarter are doing so in an effort to eat healthier.( 最近的一项调查发现,美国人在家做饭的人数是一年前的两倍,近四分之一的人这样做是为了吃得更健康)”,F选项“如果改善健康是你做饭的主要原因,那你并不是一个人”中的关键词“health”与下文意思相符,说明有很多人做饭的主要原因是改善健康,选项中的you're not alone呼应下文的twice as many Americans。
根据下文“It's considerably cheaper than ordering from restaurants, or buying prepared food from supermarkets.( 这比在餐馆点餐或在超市买准备好的食物便宜得多)”可知,本段主要从经济节约的方面说明自己做饭的好处。
根据上文“In terms of improving cooking skill, you can't help but improve if you do it over and over again.( 在提高烹饪水平方面,如果你一次又一次地做,你肯定会提高)”可知,G选项“你很可能会提升烹饪技能,而且这种技能可以伴随你一生”符合文意,选项中的“improve your cooking skills”与上文“improving cooking skill”属于同一话题,顺理成章。

That was ten years ago, yet it was still fresh in Peter’s childhood memory. At a very young age, he realized the power of words. It was a sunny day. Peter was covered in dust as he rolled on the ground, playing. Just an ordinary day in his second grade class, that’s what Peter thought. His teacher waved at his mom from far away and then walked closer and asked,“Mrs Bit, can we talk for a second?”she said, smiling.
Peter’s mom walked into her office and there they had a conversation. Peter wasn’t allowed to be with his mom at that moment, so he waited outside, assuming that it would be great news. Peter’s teacher thanked his mom as she walked away. His mom looked at him and he felt immediately that something was not okay. As soon as they returned home, Peter couldn’t help asking what they talked about. He asked more than he should. He didn’t care if his mom would get annoyed. He just wanted an answer.
“You’re failing. She said that you’re the only one failing in her class. And she’s pretty sure that you’re not going to make it to the top section. I’m sorry.”Mom said as she held back her tears. Those words ruined every piece of his childhood. That moment placed a ton on his shoulders. Peter was seven years old at that time.
When Peter reached sixth grade, no hope could be seen in his eyes. Failing grades, reports from teachers and the comparisons between him and other students made him feel like he was nothing. No one believed in him, including his parents. He had no friends. Worst of all, he had no confidence in doing anything well.
Peter transferred to another school by seventh grade where he met this teacher. Everybody called her“Miss Diana”. She was sweet, jolly, and different from teachers Peter had before. She treated every student equally. One day, she had to choose a leader for a group.
    Paragraph 1:
She went up to Peter who was sitting there alone.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
    Peter successfully led the group.
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
She went up to Peter who was sitting there alone. She sat beside him and they talked.“I am planning a group activity and I’m wondering if you could be a group leader,”she said cheerfully. Peter was surprised because he had never got such a chance and he even dared not get it. He hesitated at first. After years of being looked down upon, he didn’t have enough confidence in himself. But with Miss Diana’s encouragement, he decided to have a try.
    Paragraph 2:
Peter successfully led the group. His parents were so happy to see his changes in the new school. They had thought that Peter would not be successful. Finally, they knew sharp words could destroy a child. From then on, Peter began to smile and felt the happiness again. Most importantly, Peter believed in himself again. And that is when Peter knew the power of words.

    1.想知道:wonder/want to know

    3.相信:believe in/trust
