During spring in the Pacific Nrthwest, meltwater rushes dwn rivers and the wind ften blws hard. These frces spin the regin’s many pwer turbines (涡轮机) and generate electricity at a time f mild temperatures and relatively lw energy demand. But much f this seasnal extra electricity—which culd pwer air cnditiners in summer—is lst because batteries cannt stre it lng enugh.
Researchers at Pacific Nrthwest Natinal Labratry (PNNL), a Department f Energy Natinal Labratry in Richland, Wash, are develping a battery that might slve this prblem. In a recent paper published in Cell Reprts Physical Science, they demnstrated hw freezing and unfreezing a mlten salt slutin (熔盐溶液) creates a rechargeable battery that can stre energy cheaply and efficiently fr weeks r mnths at a time. This will be an utcme that is significant tward renewable energy.
Mst cnventinal batteries stre energy as chemical reactins waiting t happen. When the battery is cnnected t a circuit, electrns travel frm ne side f the battery t the ther, generating electricity. T cmpensate fr the change, charged ins (离子) mve thrugh the slid material that separates the tw sides f the battery. But even when the battery is nt in use, the ins gradually mve acrss this material. As that happens, the battery lses energy. Sme rechargeable batteries can lse a third f their stred charge in a single mnth.
“In ur battery, we try t stp this cnditin.” says PNNL researcher Gusheng Li, “The material inside the battery is made f a salt slutin that is slid at nrmal temperatures but becmes liquid when heated t 180℃. When the material is slid, ins are lcked in place, preventing self—discharge. Only when the material becmes liquid can ins flw thrugh the battery, allwing it t charge r discharge.”
“Creating a battery that can resist repeated cycles f heating and cling is n small task. Hwever, we want t g thrugh it and see hw far we can take them t cmmercializatin.” says Gusheng Li.
32. Why d the researchers develp the new battery?
A. T extend the duratin time.B. T prtect the envirnment.
C. T cut the cst f the battery.D. T generate mre electricity.
33. What des paragraph 4 mainly tell us abut the new chargeable battery?
A. Its cmplex design.B. Its required temperature.
C. Its majr advantage.D. Its ptential market.
34. Which wrd best describes Li’s attitude twards the new battery?
A. Cnfident.B. Cautius.C. Cnservative.D. Skeptical.

B. Researching Ways t Prmte Rechargeable Batteries.

D. Rechargeable Salt Battery Freezes Energy fr Lnger Strage.
