Ltta is the first junir cycle mayr in the wrld and her wrking area is the Dutch capital. Yu wuld think this challenge wuld be superfluus in a city knwn as the bicycle capital f the wrld. The number f bicycles in Amsterdam is estimated at 881,000 – mre than the city’s 850,000 inhabitants – and 63% f the ppulatin cycle daily.
But children wh cycle in Amsterdam face challenges, Ltta says: “The three biggest prblems fr us are cars, cycling turists and scters (小型摩托). The cars take up t much space, the turists are always swinging side t side and stp when yu least expect it, and the scters simply run yu ver.”
Ltta became junir cycle mayr in June last year when she wn a cntest in which schlchildren were asked t cme up with plans t make cycling safer and mre fun. Her idea was t add children’s bikes t the ppular bike share prgramme.
Since Ltta was appinted junir cycle mayr, she has been busy, giving interviews, pening cycling cntests in the city and being a jury(评审员)member during the Amsterdam Light Parade, an event in which Amsterdammers decrate their bikes with lights.
She is nw planning a meeting with the city’s mayr t discuss ideas that children have cme up with: “One f ur prpsals is a bicycle park where children can learn hw t cycle. Right nw, mst f us learn it in the street, which can be quite busy. Anther idea is t create an app fr turists t teach them the rules f cycling, because mst f them really dn’t knw.”
Fllwing the success f the Amsterdam scheme, cycle mayrs arund the wrld are nw planning t appint junir clleagues. “They see it wrks really well,” Berma, the senir majr, says. “I talk t the parents, Ltta talks t the children. And if yu lk at the city thrugh the eyes f a child, yu will als make it accessible fr thers. A city that’s gd fr an eight-year-ld is als gd fr an 88-year-ld.”

23.(8分) Are we alne in the universe? A team f scientists annunced n January 6, 2015 that they had identified eight planets beynd ur slar system, three r fur f which rbit in their stars’ “Gldilcks Zne” — the regin where temperatures are nt t ht r t cld fr water, which is a necessary ingredient fr life as we knw it, t exist liquid frm. This may be gd news fr peple hping that Earth is nt the nly inhabited wrld in the universe.
The scientists, led by Dr. Guilerm Trres f the Harvard-Smithsnian Center fr Astrphysics, made the discveries using data cllected by the planet-seeking Kepler telescpe.
NASA launched Kepler in 2009. Since then, the telescpe has identified mre than 1,000 planets utside f ur slar system. Trres and his team analyzed the data abut the eight newly discvered wrld t determine which nes are mst likely t be similar t ur Earth.
Amng the new discveries, the scientists say the planets called Kepler438b and 442b are the clsest t Earth. Kepler 438b is just abut 10% larger than ur planet, and gets 40% mre f its energy frm its star than Earth receives frm the Sun. Temperatures there wuld be abut 140 degrees. Kepler 442b is abut 33% larger than Earth, but receives 30% less energy frm its star. That wuld make it a ptentially chillier wrld than ur wn. Trres says it is pssible fr life t exist and survive in either f thse temperatures, but fr that t happen, these planets wuld need t have anther key ingredient fr life: a heat-trapping atmsphere like Earth’s.
While these findings add t the pssibility that life exists beynd Earth, Trres cautins against drawing cnclusins, “We are nt claiming they are inhabited,” he says. In fact, these planets are s far away that the scientists cannt bserve them directly, which can be explanatin fr why fr nw it remains unknwn whether these planets cntain life. But the discvery f planets in their stars’ habitable znes suggests that smewhere ut there, sme frm f alien life may have taken hld.

C.They have made the discveries thrugh Kepler.
D.They have discvered ver 1000 planets in 7 years.
3、What is the pssible thing that Kepler 442b lacks fr life t exist n?
A.The waterB.The sunlight
C.The silD.The atmsphere
4、Abut their explratin, Trres wants t indicate that ________.
A.there is a lt left t learn
B.they have had decisive gains

Grss’ cncern clearly shws what has been a tuchy subject in the wrld f science fr a lng time: Why are there still s few wmen in science, and hw might that affect what we learn frm research?
Wmen nw make up half the natinal wrkfrce, earn mre cllege and graduate degrees than men, and by sme estimates represent the largest single ecnmic frce in the wrld. Yet the gender gap in science persists, t a greater degree than in ther prfessins, particularly in high-end, math-intensive fields such as cmputer science and engineering.
Accrding t US Census Bureau statistics, wmen in fields cmmnly referred t as STEM (science, technlgy, engineering, mathematics) made up 7 percent f that wrkfrce in 1970, a figure that had jumped t 23 percent by 1990. But the rise essentially stpped there. Tw decades later, in 2011, wmen made up 26 percent f the science wrkfrce.

One key rle f this hrmne in many animals is t prmte bnding, like that between a mther and newbrn. The increase f xytcin didn’t happen, thugh, when scientists repeated the experiment with wlves and the humans wh had raised them.
A secnd experiment als fund that if dgs were given xytcin, they lked at their wners lnger. Scientists aren’t sure exactly why, but this reactin ccurred nly with female dgs. Their wners xytcin levels als rse as a result.
The result f these experiments might help answer an age-ld questin: Hw did the fearsme wlf ancestr f mdern dgs turn int man’s best friend? Takefumi Kikusui, an animal scientist wh wrked n the study, thinks that the change happened when dgs first became dmestic (驯养的).
Accrding t Kikusui, there may have been a small grup f wild dgs that were naturally friendlier. “Humans are very sensitive t eye cntact. By using this special cmmunicatin tl, the dgs are able t win ver ur hearts. If they are mre likely t make eye cntact, it wuld be easier fr them t bnd with dg wners,” Kikusui said.
