    [2022·武汉部分学校高三质量检测]When Jseph Ck first landed n the Greenland ice sheet in 2010, he was expecting t see a primitive white envirnment. What he fund was a “clrful mix”—frm black and gray t green, purple and brwn, with nen (霓虹) blue melt streams cutting thrugh the ice.     Ck says the tiny life frms he studies are cntributing t the prblem. One f these rganisms is an alga (海藻) that grws in the thin layer f water n the surface f the ice. It prduces a purple­brwn pigment (色素) which acts “like a natural sunscreen”, says Ck, prtecting the algae frm the full frce f the Arctic sunlight. The pigment als causes the ice t heat up and melt.
    “If yu g ut n a ht day wearing a black T­shirt, yu get warmer than if yu g ut n a ht day wearing a white T­shirt. The same thing happens n the ice,” says Ck. “These algae, like the black T­shirt fr the glacier, are causing it t warm up in the sun and melt faster.”
    Ck's research n a part f the Greenland ice sheet cvering 3,900 square miles revealed that algae are respnsible fr up t 13% f the ice melting. In sme lcalized areas, the algae bsted melting by up t 26%.
    Glacier algae are nt a new phenmenn—there are recrds f them in the diaries f plar explrers frm the 1870s, accrding t Ck.
