It is estimated that medical waste, including masks which take 450 years t decmpse (分解) in nature, has increased by 60 percent during the pandemic.     The team at LIPI is experimenting with the dispsable masks cntaining plyprpylene (聚丙烯), a type f plastic that is tugh but stretchable, which makes gd raw material t prduce varius plastic prducts. At RMIT University in Melburne, Australia, researchers are making a mix f mask pellets (团粒), which help t add hardness and strength, and prcess building rubble (碎石) designed t be used fr the base layer f rads and pavements. One kilmeter f a tw­lane rad will use arund 3 millin masks, preventing 93 tns f waste frm ging t landfill.
    Fr the brader demand in mask recycling, TerraCycle, a waste management and recycling cmpany, ffers a Zer Waste Bx that wrks like a recycling bin fr used safety and prtective equipment. Waste frm hspitals and medical centres is nt included. The bx cmes with prepaid return labels. Once full, it can be sent back t the cmpany.
