Fr centuries, fishers in Narrangansett have fished in the waters f the nrthwestern Atlantic fr herrings (鲱鱼). But as climate change warms the wrld’s seas, the herrings are disappearing at the suthern end f their range and turning up mre ften at its nrthern edges. A study shws that cncentratins f marine (海洋的) species ppulatins have been shifting away frm the equatr (赤道) and tward the ples during the curse f the past century. These mvements culd wreak havc n fd webs and endanger the livelihds (生计) f fishers.
The trpical (热带的) water at the equatr is well-knwn fr having the richest diversity f marine life n Earth. The number f marine species naturally decreases gradually as yu head twards the ples. Eclgists have assumed this glbal pattern has remained stable ver recent centuries until nw. Our recent study fund the cean arund the equatr has already becme t ht fr many species t survive, and that glbal warming is respnsible. And as species flee t cler water twards the ples, it’s likely t have deep impacts n marine ecsystems.
Lsing species in trpical ecsystems means eclgical adaptatin t envirnmental changes is reduced, ptentially damage ecsystem persistence. In subtrpical ecsystems, species richness is increasing. This means there’ll be species invaders, and new cmpetitive relatinships. This culd result in ecsystem cllapse in which species g extinct and ecsystem services (such as fd supplies) are permanently changed.
One way is t reduce ur emissins aggressively. Other pprtunities culd als help safeguard bidiversity and hpefully minimize the wrst impacts f it shifting away frm the equatr. Designing climate-smart reserves culd further prtect bidiversity frm future changes. Fr example, reserves fr marine life culd be placed where the climate will be stable ver the freseeable future. We shuld take actin withut delay.

The new radi prgramme frm Self-help expert Glennn Dyle unexpectedly disturbed me. In a sessin f We Can D Hard Things, she fcuses n bundaries and their imprtance t ur mental happiness. I heartily agree with her, because saying a plite but firm “n” is ne f the basics fr a happy life. I was, hwever, interested when she raised the idea that perhaps, as well as learning when t cnfirm ur bundaries, we als need t stretch them. When des a bundary becme a cage that lcks us away?
Isn’t it always the case that just as yu think yu’ve gt an area f life nailed; smebdy cmes alng t shw yu that that’s nt the case? As I listened, I started t see bundaries that might cause mre prblems than they were slving.
There was the wrk bundary that said that unless a prject fell exactly int my tpics, I wuldn’t take it-which meant that I turned dwn wrk that was therwise interesting and rewarding.
There was the bundary that said I wasn’t t buy anything until I’d reached my savings gal-which resulted in me having t restart my laptp 20 times a day.
And then there was a bundary arund relatinships that set ut exactly hw I shuld be treated and what I wanted in them. Helpful t sme extent, it blcked me frm allwing smene t express their lve fr me, even if it wasn’t quite what I had predicted.
Had I been ding bundaries wrng all the time? Did I need t figure them all ut again? I’ve spent the past few weeks lking at the bundaries I’ve secretly put in place, and I’ve let myself lwer sme that have been my prtectin ver the years. Then I’ve cme t the cnclusin that, when it cmes t bundaries, I’m a beginner again, and that’s fine. In fact, being back at the beginning is a blessing because it means there are still lessns t be learned and adventures t be had and that is smething fr which I can nly be grateful.

What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we knw is untrue? ____16____ Fr example, suppse a friend wants t brrw sme mney frm yu. Yu say, “I wish I culd help yu but I’m shrt f mney myself.” In fact, yu are nt shrt f mney but yur friend is in the habit f nt paying his debts and yu dn’t want t hurt his feelings by reminding him f this. Is this really a lie?
Prfessr Jerald Jellisn f the University f Suthern Califrnia has made a scientific study f lying. Accrding t him, wmen are better liars than men, particularly when telling a “white lie”, such as when a wman at a party tells anther wman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it lks terrible. ____17____ Other researchers say that men are mre likely t tell serius lies, such as making a prmise which they have n intentin f carrying ut. He says there are several typical frms, such as cvering part f the muth with fingers, tuching the upper-lip r putting a finger f the hand at ne side f the muth. ____20____ Of curse, such gestures as rubbing the nse r cvering the muth, r mving abut in a chair cannt be taken as prf that the speaker is lying. They simply tend t ccur mre frequently in this situatin. It is nt ne gesture alne that gives the liar away but a whle number f things, and in particular the cntext in which the lie is tld.
A.Hwever, this is nly ne side f the stry.
B.Or is it smething wrse than what it really is?
C.A “white lie” appears t be a lie that the teller tells t prfit r gain sme advantage frm it.
D.The tip f the nse is very sensitive t such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch (痒).
E.Why peple smetimes cver their muths while lying is that they wish thse wrds had nt cme ut f their muths.
F.Such a gesture can be understd as an uncnscius attempt n the part f the liar t stp himself r herself frm lying.
G.Research has als studied the way peple’s behavir changes in a number f small, apparently unimprtant ways when they lie.

16.根据前句“What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we knw is untrue?”(谎言到底是什么? 可知,空前是对“什么是谎言”进行提问,使用提问的方式引出主题,B选项“Or is it smething wrse than what it really is?”(又或者还是比实际情况更糟糕?)
17.根据空前“Accrding t him, wmen are better liars than men, particularly when telling a white lie.”(据他说,女性比男性更善于撒谎,尤其是在说“善意的谎言”时)可知,根据Prfessr Jerald Jellisn得出来的结论是女性更善于说谎。根据空后“Other researchers say that men are mre likely t tell serius lies.”(其他研究人员表示,男性更有可能说严重的谎言。)可知,选项与前文内容构成的是转折关系,故与A选项“Hwever, this is nly ne side f the stry.”(然而,这只是故事的一面)起到承上启下的作用。故选A。
根据空后“It has been fund that if they are sitting dwn at the time, they tend t mve abut in their chairs mre than usual.”(研究发现,如果他们当时是坐着的,他们会比平时在椅子上动得更多。)可知,讲述的是人在说谎时的一些细微动作的变化,与G选项“Research has als studied the way peple’s behavir changes in a number f small, apparently unimprtant ways when they lie.”(研究还研究了人们撒谎时在一些看似无关紧要的小事上的行为变化。)
19.根据空前的“One explanatin f this may be that lying causes a slight increase in bld pressure.”(对此的一种解释可能是说谎会导致血压轻微升高。)可知,人说谎的时候血压会升高,a slight increase in bld pressure与G选项“The tip f the nse is very sensitive t such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch.”(鼻尖对这种变化非常敏感,压力的增加使它发痒。)
同时根据空前的“He says there are several typical frms, such as cvering part f the muth with fingers, tuching the upper-lip r putting a finger f the hand at ne side f the muth.”(他说,有几种典型的形式,比如用手指覆盖嘴巴的一部分,触摸上唇或把一只手的一个手指放在嘴巴的一边。)可知,与F选项“Such a gesture can be understd as an uncnscius attempt n the part f the liar t stp himself r herself frm lying.”(这样的动作可以被理解为撒谎者无意识地试图阻止自己说谎。)
