Ever since Lucy Nabiki Takona was a young girl growing up in a village in Kenya, she knew she wanted to have a career in education.

So when her father told her when she was 14 that she would have to drop out of school to marry the son of her father’s friend, she ran away. It took her three days to walk through the bush to her aunt’s house.

“I was used to walking, so for me it was not something big,” Takona says, “It was more scary to get married than walk on your own in the bush.”

Later, Takona’s aunt talked to some influential elders in the community who were able to persuade her father to let her continue her schooling – while schooling for many Masai girls ends in their early teen years.

As a child, Takona says, she thought her only career option as a woman was to be a teacher. But during a trip to the Nairobi National Museum in her last year of high school, she realized there were other possibilities. “A woman took us around the museum and she really had knowledge, so from that day forward I knew girl’s could be something more than teacher.” Takona says.

There’s a day for just about everything, and the United Nations has designated May 20 as World Bee Day to celebrate he pollinators (传粉昆虫) dwelling in hives, fields and gardens around the globe. It draws much concern on bees and there’s a good reason to pay attention to them.

“There are 20,000 species of bees around the world and a lot of these bees are in decline,” says Hien Ngo, a pollinator expert from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization. That includes honeybees, of course, but Ngo says they only make up a minority of all the kinds of bees in the world. Climate change, pesticides and habitat loss are putting many of those species a risk.

“Bees really provide for us in many ways. They’re also important to our culture, dating back thousands of years in terms of heritage, inspiration of art,” Ngo says. They even provide inspiration for TikTok, where Erika Thompson, a professional beekeeper in Austin, Texas, shares her work.

“The landlord wanted to call an exterminator (根除者), but the family who lived here wanted to save the bees, so they called me,” she says in come video.

Her fans watch with happiness – and sometimes a little horror – as she picks up mounds (成堆) of bees with her bare hands and then moves them somewhere safer.

“I’ve removed bees from a lot of crazy places,” Thompson says. “You know, I’ve removed bees from homes, RVs, tires, speakers and even a toilet”

Thompson’s work is about more than getting millions of views per video. “Bees are just a key factor in creating diverse and healthy ecosystems,” she notes.

8What do you know about World Bee Day?

    A. Many bees are in decline. B. It is celebrated on May 22 every year.

    C. It is designated by the United Kingdom. D. People pay more attention to bees because of it.

    9. Which factor that makes many bees in danger is NOT mentioned?

    A. The change of climate. B. The shortage of food.

    C. The damage to their habitat. D. The application of pesticides.

    10. What’s Nigo’s attitude towards celebrating World Bee Day?

    A. Favorable. B. Unwilling. C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.

    11. What’s the best title for the text?

    A. A Video On Bees

    B. How To Celebrate World Dee Day?

    C. Why Should We Celebrate World Bee Day?

    D. How Can We Human Beings Protect Bees?

    【答案】8. D9. B10. A11. C

Therapy (治疗) dogs have long visited nursing homes and schools and even disaster sites, offering comfort to humans. A new study shows that a 10-minute visit from a therapy dog can help relieve patients’ pain in the emergency room.

The research from the University of Saskatchewan, published in the journal PLOS on Wednesday, found that emergency room patients who were visited by a therapy dog reported less pain than those who weren’t.

“Therapy dogs themselves are really friendly and are so excited to visit with people in places where they don’t typically have a pot,” Dr. Colleen Dell, a professor at the University of Saskatchewan and one of the study authors, told NPR.

In a trial, researchers asked more than 200 patients to report their pain levels. One group of patients received a 10-minute visit from a therapy dog and the other group did not. After the visit, researchers asked patients in both groups to report their pain levels again. Those who spent 10 minutes with the dog reported less pain, the study found.

Many patients have experienced positive outcome from therapy dogs, but this study clinically proves them, said Dell, herself a therapy dog handler.

Stempien, an associate professor of emergency medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, has seen the dogs in action at the hospital where he works. Prior to the pandemic (大流行病), a therapy dog would visit multiple times a week. During visits, the dog would often make a stop in the nursing lounge (休息室) before visiting with patients.

“I think it brought smiles om faces of almost all the staff they interacted with,” Stempien told NPR.

But the people aren’t the only ones getting something out of this. “Therapy dogs love their job. They love to interact with people.” Dell said, “Though we need more research on his, we believe they also acquire something out of it as well as giving while visiting with people.”

    12. Which of the following is true about the trial?

    A. 200 doctors and nurses took part in the trial.

    B. Those visited by the therapy dogs got rid of their pain totally.

    C. Those visited by the therapy dogs reported more positive results.

    D. Different patients received different treatments from the therapy dogs.

    13. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 5 refer to?

    A. Therapy dogs. B. Many patients. C. Dog handlers. D. The benefits from therapy dogs.

    14. What can you know from the last paragraph?

    A. Therapy dogs are only interested in helping people.

    B. Therapy dogs feel less pain when staying with people.

    C. Therapy dogs can also get something when helping people.

    D. The present research is enough to prove that therapy dogs love their job.

    15. Where does this text probably come from?

One night, Gayle suddenly found that Jennifer, who was always lying beside her at night, was not there, so she got up at once and checked the whole house. However, Jennifer was nowhere to be found, making Gayle very worried.

Gayle tried to be optimistic and told herself that Jennifer might return soon. However, Jennifer still didn’t appear the next morning. Gayle then called her nephews and friend Tracy for help. When they arrived, they comforted Gayle first. Then they started searching the neighbourhood, the streets and nearby blocks for any sign of Jennifer, but they still didn’t find Jennifer by lunchtime the next day.

Gayle then decided to search the neighborhood again. She couldn’t explain it, but she had a feeling that Jennifer was somewhere nearby. Tracy accompanied Gayle in the search to offer help and support. After hours of searching, they got tired and decided to return home to rest for a while so that they could have more energy to search later on that day. They began walking back to Gayle’s home in a very depressed mood.

On their way back, they heard a cry coming from an abandoned shed (棚屋). They ran over to the shed immediately. When they broke into it, they found a large hole in the ground. And to their surprise, Jennifer was there wagging her tail.
