Species (中国西南野生生物种质资源库), r GBOWS, in Yunnan Prvince is racing against
time t prtect the natin's plant species.
Funded in 2007, GBOWS is a research and preservatin (保存) bank fr rare and endangered plants and animals.
As the largest bank f wild species in Asia in terms f species, GBOWS has preserved 85,046 seeds frm 10,601 species and 60,262 bilgical samples (生物样本) f 2,203 animal species. The number f seeds at GBOWS is clse t that f the wrld's biggest seed bank — the Millennium Seed Bank in the United Kingdm.
S hw des the bank wrk? Scientists cllect the endangered and useful wild species and send them t the seed bank. Once the seeds arrive at GBOWS, they're dried and preserved in a special rm. the seeds inside.
X-rays will make sure the seeds are undamaged and n insects are hidden inside after they are cleaned and separated frm brken nes. The seeds
