The 14th National Games held in Xi’an has triggered great interest — not only in sports and fitness, but also in the host city itself. If you are planning a tour of Xi’an taking less than 3 days, you’ll want to hit all the following highlights.
The Terracotta Army
The Terracotta Army is not just China’s premier historical attraction but one of the greatest discoveries of the 20th century, which was constructed by China’s First Emperor Qin Shi Huang of the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-207 BC). It is a collection of thousands of life-size terracotta soldiers, horses, and chariots (战车) in battle formation, showing the emperor’s armies in full splendor.
Ancient City Wall
Xi’an City Wall was built in the 14th century by Zhu Yuanzhang, the first Emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) as a military defense system. Now it is one of the oldest and best-preserved Chinese city walls. The wall is now a landmark, dividing the city into inner and outer areas.
Giant Wild Goose Pagoda
One of China’s most famous Buddhist pagodas, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda was built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) for the study of Buddhist scriptures. One of the main functions of the pagoda was to store sutras (经文) brought to China from India by the famous monk and traveler Xuan Zang. It was built with layers of bricks and has a grand structure and appearance. It is exemplary of traditional Chinese architecture.
Shaanxi History Museum
The Shaanxi History Museum is home to over 370,000 precious relics unearthed in Shaanxi over the years. Its collections range from bronze wares to pottery figures, gold and silver wares and wall paintings from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) tombs. Among its precious collections, 18 pieces have been listed as national treasures.

I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province, on the historic Tea Horse Road. I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet, I was blown away. I couldn't imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world.
Last May, I met Paul. He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke of the Shu-Yandu Dao (the Southern Silk Road), the travels of the 17th-century Chinese explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early 20th-century American botanist Joseph Rock. He also talked of Xuanzang. Paul considered many of them heroes and in a sense Chinese pioneers of slow journalism.
I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28, 2021, we set out. Our days were simple: walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep.
We met many people on the road. Some were curious, surrounding us and watching us; some gave us directions; some invited us into their home to take a rest; some spoke of the charm of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking with our minds.
Together, we were impressed by the biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains. As I walked on ancient paths through mountains, I seemed to hear the antique voices of past travelers urging me to be careful on the road.
Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul, I came to a realization. Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable, is only a small part of the benefit of moving with our feet. A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us, shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other's cultures.
4. How did the writer first respond to Paul's travel plan?
A. Scared. B. Puzzled. C. Disappointed. D. Surprised.
5. What can we learn about Paul Salopek from paragraph 2?
A. He was a western journalist. B. He had a knowledge of China.
C. He came to China several times. D. He was Joseph Rock's acquaintance.
6. What does paragraph 4 tell us about the writer and Paul?
A. They honored the ancestors. B. They set off in high spirits.
C. They satisfied the locals' curiosity. D. They built bonds with people.
7. What is the main purpose of the writer's writing the text?
A. To share and reflect on a journey. B. To suggest a new way of travel.
C. To advocate protection of biodiversity. D. To introduce and promote Chinese culture.
D 5. B 6. D 7. A

C
One of the questions surrounding climate change is how it might affect the food supply for a growing global population. A new study suggests that researchers have been overlooking how two key human responses to climate—how much land people choose to farm, and the number of crops they plant—will affect food production in the future. The new study focused on the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, an emerging(新兴的)global breadbasket(产粮地区)that as of 2013 supplied 10 percent of the world’s soybeans. The researchers used variations in temperature and precipitation(降水)across the state over an eight-year period to estimate the sensitivity of the region’s agricultural production to climate change. Those historical comparisons can help in making predictions about the sensitivity of agriculture to future climate change.
The study found that, if the patterns from 2002 to 2008 hold in the future, an increase in average temperature in Mato Grosso of just 1 degree will lead to a 9 to 13 percent reduction in overall production of soy and corn. “This is worrisome given that the temperature in the study region is predicted to rise by 2 degrees by 2050,” said Avery Cohn, who led the study.
Most studies of this kind look only at the extent to which climate shocks affect crop output. But researchers can miss critical dynamics(动力)that can affect overall output, says Leah VanWey, one of the study’s senior authors. “If you look at output alone, you’re not looking at all of the information because there are economic and social changes going on as well,” said VanWey.
If output decreases, farmers may put less land area into production because it’s not profitable. Farmers may also vary the number of crops they plant in a growing season. Double cropping is common in Mato Grosso. But if the weather is bad, farmers may change their decision to plant a second crop.
8. The value of the new study lies in _________.
A. increasing the number of crops people plant
B. focusing on an emerging global breadbasket
C. making predictions about human responses to climate change
D. controlling people’s choice of their farming area and crop numbers
9. According to Avery Cohn, by 2050, the overall production of soy and corn will _________.
A. remain almost unchanged B. decrease by more than 9%
C. increase by from 9% to 13% D. decrease by more than 18%
10. What can we know about the similar studies mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. They can’t provide exact information to farmers.
B. They don’t take into consideration some key factors.
C. Their discouraging results largely affect overall crop output.
D. They pay too much attention to economic and social changes.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Farmers’ possible reactions to climate shocks.
B. Possible climate change in Mato Grosso.
C. The benefits of double cropping in Mato Grosso.
D. Farmers’ decision on planting crops in the future.
【答案】8 C 9. D 10. B 11. A
Those historical comparisons can help in making predictions about the sensitivity of agriculture to future climate change.
The study found that, if the patterns from 2002 to 2008 hold in the future, an increase in average temperature in Mato Grosso of just 1 degree will lead to a 9 to 13 percent reduction in overall production of soy and corn. 而根据“This is worrisome given that the temperature in the study region is predicted to rise by 2 degrees by 2050,可知道2050年会升高2度,因此,减产量会在18%-26%之间,所以D正确。
But researchers can miss critical dynamics(动力)that can affect overall output, says Leah VanWey, one of the study’s senior authors.
D
David Bennett became the first person to have a heart transplanted successfully into him from a pig. In press material issued three days after the operation, the University of Maryland confirmed Mr Bennett was doing well, and was capable of breathing on his own. While he continues to rely on artificial support to pump blood around his body, the team behind the surgery, led by Bartley Griffith, plan gradually to reduce its use.
This operation is a milestone for xenotransplantation — the transfer of organs from other species to human patients. Doctors say the next few weeks will be a critical to see how Bennett does with the new organ and whether his body begins to reject it.
The operation itself received exceptional authorization from America’s Food and Drug Administration under a provision which lets doctors use experimental treatments as a matter of last resort. Prior to the operation, Mr. Bennett was diagnosed with terminal heart disease, but was judged too ill to qualify for a human transplant. Having spent months in a hospital bed with no improvement to his condition, he gave his agreement to the surgery.
Bennett released a statement through the medical center the day before the operation. In it, he said: “It was either die or do this transplant. I want to live. I know it’s a shot in the dark, but it’s my last choice.”
Past attempts at pig-to-human transplants have failed because of genetic differences that caused organ rejection. To reduce the risk of that happening in this case, scientists removed several genes from the donor pig that are linked with organ rejection. They also removed another gene from the animal in an effort to prevent too much growth of pig heart tissue.
Bennett’s genetically modified pig heart was provided by Revivicor, a regenerative medicine company based in Blacksburg, Virginia. On the morning of the surgery, the transplant team removed the pig’s heart and placed it into a special device to keep it running until the operation.
12. Why did Bennett adopt a pig heart transplant?
A. Genetic differences may cause organ rejection.
B. He failed to get approval from America’s Food and Drug Administration.
C. He couldn’t manage to find a suitable human heart.
D. His heart disease was too severe to receive a human transplant.
13. What’s the meaning of the underlined phrase “a shot in the dark” in Paragraph4?
A. A possibility that shoots oneself in the evening.
B. A belief that all things will go smoothly.
C. A guess that is based on little evidence or information.
D. A challenge someone must face.
14. How do scientists prevent the organ rejection?
A. By taking away some of unfavorable genes.
B. By promoting the growth of pig heart issue.
C. By placing the pig’s heart into a special device.
D. By connecting to a heart-lung machine until the operation.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Bennett’s New Life with a Pig Heart
B. First Successful Pig-to-Human Transplant
C. A New Progress in Life-Saving Transplants
D. Past Attempts at Pig-to-Human Transplants
D 13. C 14. A 15. B
根据第三段“Prior to the operation, Mr. Bennett was diagnosed with terminal heart disease, but was judged too ill to qualify for a human transplant.(在手术之前,Bennett先生被诊断出患有晚期心脏病,但由于病情严重,无法接受人体移植)”可知,Bennett先生接受移植猪的心脏是因为他病情严重,无法接受人体移植。
根据第四段“It was either die or do this transplant. I want to live. I know it’s a shot in the dark, but it’s my last choice.(要么死要么做这个移植。我想活着。我知道它是a shot in the dark,但这是我最后的选择)”可知,a shot in the dark是名词,描述当时手术的特点。根据第二段“This operation is a milestone for xenotransplantation — the transfer of organs from other species to human patients.(这次手术是异种移植的一个里程碑——将其他物种的器官移植给人类患者)”可知,这样的手术是第一次做,所以有很大的未知性,没有任何的依据和可借鉴的信息,所以一切都是猜测。所以a shot in the dark的意思应该是“瞎猜的”,和选项C意思一致。
根据第五段“To reduce the risk of that happening in this case, scientists removed several genes from the donor pig that are linked with organ rejection.(为了降低这种情况发生的风险,科学家从捐赠猪身上移除了几个与器官排斥有关的基因)”可知,为了避免排异现象的发生,科学家从捐赠猪身上移除了几个与器官排斥有关的基因。故选A。
根据第一段“David Bennett became the first person to have a heart transplanted successfully into him from a pig.(David Bennett成为第一个从猪身上成功移植心脏的人)”可知,这篇文章主要讲述第一个从猪身上成功移植心脏到人身上的科学案例。

When seeing “LOL” in your phone text, would you think of a popular game “League of Legends” immediately, which you have even been addicted to? The answer is most probably yes. ___16___ So it’s important to figure out what “LOL” means and how to respond to your friends perfectly for every situation.
They think your text was funny.
Actually, LOL is short for “laughing out loud” that first became popular on Usenet and has even been used along with emojis in emails and text messages. If you share a story or joke and get “LOL” as a response, the person is telling you that he thinks you’re funny. ___17___
They accept your awkward moment.
As time goes, LOL has become something much more flexible and is used even when nothing is slightly amusing. If you just tell someone about an embarrassing moment you make, what about his response? ___18___ All you need to do is just sharing the feelings and turning the page.
They don’t want to continue the conversation.
___19___ If the person just types you these 3 letters, he might indicate that his talking is done, at least for now. You don’t have to reply to their message right away. ___20___ Just go about your day and text them again later if you have something to share or want to start a new conversation.
A. In some cases, “LOL” shows the anger.
B. Sometimes, “LOL” signals a lack of interest.
C. Don’t forget to reply to them as soon as possible.
D. So you can ask him what he likes about your joke or story.
E. And you don’t need to worry your relation will naturally die out!
F. He might use “LOL” to show his sympathy for what you’re going through.
G. However, you may confuse and embarrass yourselves in some specific context.
G 17. D 18. F 19. B 20. E
根据上文“When seeing “LOL” in your phone text, would you think of a popular game “League of Legends” immediately, which you have even been addicted to? (当你在手机短信中看到LOL时,你会不会马上想到一个让你上瘾的热门游戏“英雄联盟”?)”可知,前文描述看到LOL会想到游戏。而下文“So it’s important to figure out what “LOL” means and how to respond to your friends perfectly for every situation.(所以,弄清“LOL”的含义以及在任何情况下如何完美地回应你的朋友是很重要的)”可知,LOL并不仅仅指代游戏。选项G“However, you may confuse and embarrass yourselves in some specific context.(然而,在某些特定的情况下,你可能会感到困惑和尴尬)”反驳了上文的说法,承上启下,符合题意。故选G。
根据上文“If you share a story or joke and get “LOL” as a response, the person is telling you that he thinks you’re funny.(如果你分享了一个故事或笑话,得到的回应是“LOL”,这个人是在告诉你他觉得你很有趣)”以及第一段“So it's important to figure out what “LOL” means and how to respond to your friends perfectly for every situation.(所以,弄清“LOL”的含义以及在任何情况下如何完美地回应你的朋友是很重要的)”可知,在你弄清了LOL的含义之后,应该回应你的朋友。选项D“So you can ask him what he likes about your joke or story.(所以你可以问他喜欢你的笑话或故事的什么)”讲你如何回应朋友,符合题意。故选D。
根据上文“If you just tell someone about an embarrassing moment you make, what about his response?(如果你只是告诉别人你的尴尬时刻,他会怎么回答?)” F“He might use “LOL” to show his sympathy for what you're going through.(他可能会用“LOL”来表示对你所经历的事情的同情)”正是说明这个人对你所经历的事的反应,符合题意。故选F。
根据这一段的小标题“They don’t want to continue the conversation.( 他们不想继续谈话了)”可知,这一段讲的是LOL代表不想继续谈话。再根据下文“If the person just types you these 3 letters, he might indicate that his talking is done, at least for now.(如果那个人只是给你回这三个字母,他可能暗示他的谈话结束了,至少现在是这样)”可知空处指的是LOL的含义。选项B“Sometimes, “LOL” signals a lack of interest.(有时候,LOL代表没兴趣)”和下文内容一致。故选B。
根据上文“You don’ t have to reply to their message right away.(你不必马上回复他们的信息)”以及下文“Just go about your day and text them again later if you have something to share or want to start a new conversation. (继续你的一天,如果你有什么要分享或想开始新的对话,稍后再给他们发短信)”可知,空处应为你的反应。选项E“And you don’t need to worry your relation will naturally die out!( 你不需要担心你们的关系会自然消亡!)”
